Sniper Guide: Beginner to Advanced

edited September 2016 in Player Guides
Ah, the sniper class. One of the most fun to play, but one of the hardest to master. Has the ability to provide cover fire for their team, or simply wipe the enemy team off the face of the earth all by himself. Whether you're a beginner to AVA, returning from a long break or have played this game since ijji, I hope that you learn at least 1 thing from this guide. In it, I will be going over everything from types of snipers to in depth mechanics of the class.

Disclaimer: I do consider myself an above average player, but I do not believe I know everything there is to know in this game. I am simply a guy who has played since closed beta in ijji and would like to share some things to you people. Love you all ♥

Going to be throwing everything into a spoiler because of how long it is.
First off lets start with the basics

Types of Snipers
Bolt-Action Snipers
The most common type of sniper used in legitimate gameplay, and for good reason. Requires player to charge the handle after every shot. While having a lower ammo count than semis and being much slower, they are much more reliable.
Recommended for demolition, annihilation, and some military drill.

Semi-Automatic Snipers
Not usually used for serious play, but can be fun in some instances. Has higher ammo count and rate of fire compared to a bolt-action, but less damage and is harder to control. Warning: people will complain if you kill them with one.
Recommended for annihilation, escort, convoy or CO-OP.

Quickswitching

If you come from another FPS, there's a chance that you already do this. What this is is switching from your Sniper to another weapon slot (grenade, knife, secondary) and back again. For the vast majority of bolt-action snipers in this game, it will make it so you can shoot faster than charging the handle normally. Let's get into the mechanics of it.
What you have to know about quickswitching is that there are different techniques that everyone uses. As well, in AVA, there is a limit as to how fast you can switch from one gun to another, and that limit is different for different techniques. Here are some methods I recommend trying out:

Q-Q
One of the most common techniques, this requires you to hit the "Q" button twice rapidly. While for a lot of players have nailed this down by habit, it's actually one of the slowest methods. You will be able to hit 2 separate keys with 2 different fingers faster than hitting 1 key, twice with 1 finger (unless you have some weird finger alternating method).

3-1/2-1
The next most common method (also what I used to use). Hitting either 3 then 1 OR 2 then 1 will result in a faster switch than hitting Q twice. While you may think it's A LOT faster, it really isn't. Going back to the "limit" i was talking about, this method has the lowest limit, meaning that it isn't even the fastest. If you decide to try this method, I recommend using 3 instead of 2, it feels more natural.

3-Q/2-Q
This is the method I currently use. While technically it should be as fast as the "3-1" method, the limit that was put on this is higher. If you ever see someone quickswitch and there weapon name at the bottom doesn't change, either they are macroing or they are using this method (hopefully the latter).

Silent Shotting
Have you ever been in a game, and you get shot by a sniper but you don't hear the shot? Or you hear a knife hit the wall behind you? Well, that means that they are timing their quickswitch so well that the sound of their sniper is glitching with whatever weapon they switch to in the middle of their quickswitch. While quickswitch macros DO commonly provide this, it can also be done legitimately.

Guns Where It's Not Necessary
-Blaser R93
-TPG-1
-Arisaka

TL:DR
-Fastest method is hitting 3 then Q
-Silent shotting doesn't automatically mean they're macroing
-Don't try to do it with the scroll wheel
-Try everything, see which one feels the best for you

Jumpshots/Moveshots
While some snipers have the ability to moveshot, I would NOT recommend jumpshotting, unless you don't have any other options. Jumpshots are highly inaccurate on virtually every gun. If you happen to land one past 5 feet away it's pretty much a lotto shot.

Best Guns for Move/Jump

Noscoping
As with move/jumpshotting, I don't recommend trying to noscope people UNLESS:
1. You are very close to them
2. You are taken by surprise
3. You don't really care too much if you die

A few things to note about noscoping:
-Crouching provides the most accurate shots for nearly all snipers
-Jumping provides the least accurate shots
-As with Rifle and Pointman guns, there is a "crosshair recovery" time but the time that it takes to shoot again is usually enough (besides semi-automatics)
-For the most part, noscoping is luck
-From personal experience, noscopes land more often in the top-left region of where the crosshair would be

"Rushing" vs "Camping" Snipers
Every sniper in the game has it's own special scenario where they thrive. They're typically sorted into 2 categories; "Rushers" and "Campers".

Disclaimer: Just because I've placed these into categories, this doesn't mean that one gun cannot be used for the other playstyle.
(Most Commonly Used) Rushing snipers are ones that can scope in quickly, has a fast quickswitch and can moveshot well. On the downside, they usually have higher tag rates, less ammo, weaker zoom magnifications and less range. Usually played by rushing from spawn towards sites with speed. The ability to moveshot and zoom in quickly helps to make fast reactions and take out multiple enemies quickly. Best used by offense team (EU).

(Least Commonly Used) Camping snipers are ones that have high damage, high range, stronger magnification for scopes and are overall more reliable. On the downside, they usually can't moveshot, have slower scope-in speeds and slower quickswitch speeds. Usually played by sitting in one spot or patrolling a few spots in an area of the map. The ability to tag less and having higher range helps it to ensure your enemy doesn't make it into where they're trying to go. Best used by defense team (NRF).

Wallbanging
Utilizing snipers' high wall penetration stats can be extremely beneficial to any game you're in. From using them to hurt enemies while they're rushing, to killing enemies while planting the bomb, they can be incredibly useful if known how to use them. As you guessed, some snipers are better for penetrating walls than others so here's a little guide as to which are the best & worst. Remember, high armor penetration ≠ high wall penetration.
Best Wallbang Guns

One Useful Wallbang For Common Demo Maps
All areas within the blue square is penetrable by the Barrett or Railgun
All areas within the red square are penetrable by any gun on the "Best Guns" list above. (Including M40A5 and TPG-1)

Airplane
Shooting from inside tunnel into Site 1. Use it on offense to kill anyone trying to defuse (must set bomb on left side of site).

Aslan
Shooting from mid, virtually anywhere into Site 2.

Black Scent
Shooting from warehouse into back of Site 1 or into Mid.

Cannon
Since this map is built like a military base, there aren't a lot of useful wallbangs. So here's 2, one for Barretts and one for normal scopes.
Shooting from "90" to 2 Connector

Shooting from outside 1 into Site 1

Peek Advantage
In virtually every corner of a map, one person will have what we call "Peek Advantage" over the other players. This means that one player will be able to see & shoot another player before the other even sees them. Here's a quick example of it

As you can see, lnRehab can just barely see TricycIe. If someone were to actually make this shot it either be 1 in a Million or a Triggerbot. In fact, 99% of people wouldn't even see the character model there unless they luckily manages to see their name.
EDFzeRj.jpg

Now let's see what this looks like from TricycIe's point of view.
uiTwLcK.png
Oh... well that's a much easier shot to make! Neither characters moved between pictures, but yet, Tricycle can see him and shoot him before lnRehab can even react. I urge you to learn peek advantage spots around each map, as they can make a huge difference in gameplay

Pixel Spots
In nearly every map in the game, there are small spots you can look through to either get an advantage to see where the enemy is, or actually shoot them through while at the same time making it difficult for the enemy to hit you back. Other names you may have heard for these would be peek spots, gey spots or something else. Here are some pixel spots found in the most common maps.
Airplane
Looking from box room into ice room between the box and the wall. Not really viable to shoot through unless there is someone just sitting there. Box is penetrable by Barrett, however.
yFIoiFU.png

Aslan
Looking from grass to box room/cellar. Again, not really viable to shoot through unless someone stops there. Can get good intel about where they are though.
xTS08rc.png

Black Scent
Looking from office to 2 Street or Bridge. If you have fast enough reaction time, you can shoot enemies through it, especially if they are shift walking. If your reaction time isn't great, you can lead the shot a bit to the left and wallbang them through the metal. They won't die, but you will hurt them.
bqfkC4v.png

Cannon
It's almost as if Cannon doesn't want you to play dirty. Here's the best pixel spot I could find in this map. Looking from "Gey Corner" to 1 Entrance.
qU16BLe.jpg

Dual Sight
There are a few good ones on this map, so here are a few.

Looking from Front Stairs to Tank. More than a few pixels so very viable for actually killing enemies through.
JDfhdcv.png

Looking from inside 1 to Bottom TV. Since it is long length-wise, very viable to shoot through.
NjKt9qP.jpg

Often referred to as the "kimpah spot", this can be a hard one to pull off. From Top 1 to Armory (or vice versa)
aPEtviq.jpg

Also, check out this shameless self plug for another, less known spot.

Fox Hunting
Looking from Pool to West-Mansion Window. They can shoot you back, but you should have peek advantage.
mE2vpI6.jpg

Hammer Blow
This map has the most pixel spots of any map by far. I won't list all them here, but I will give you a few.

Looking from Site 2 to Bridge/Front Entrance. They can also see you from there so watch out. Anything inside blue box is penetrable by a Barrett.
hzc954O.jpg

Looking from NRF spawn to Site 2. You can shoot people while planting the bomb or if they're defusing.
OhCuXsl.png

Looking from Truck to Bridge. You have peek advantage here but you can be wallbanged from your left.
y5ktctB.png

Another one looking from Truck to Bridge. This one is harder to land a shot through but you also have major peek advantage.
SNderp3.png

India
There are 2 important ones to note in this map.

Looking from Site 1 to Top Ladder (Vent). Just make sure you have someone covering your 1 Stairs.
XvQNOUl.png

Looking from Site 2 to Courtyard. Virtually anywhere along the barrels can be used as a peek spot if you know how.

Other Tips and Tricks
-It's easy to feel over-confident as a sniper, like you feel that you can take on the whole team yourself if you see them. If the whole team rushes you while you're alone, the best thing to do is to pick off one or two, then run until backup shows up. (Unless you are pinned into a room, then you just gotta try to go rambo on their arses)

-Be prepared to flick your aim up if you're camping a corner. Rifle and Pointmen (if smart) won't slowly peek a scope, they'll try to take them by surprise by jumping around a corner

-Every type of sniper in the game has a different zoom magnification on their scope. Even if 2 guns are extremely similar is stats, the magnification of the scope could be the thing that gets you killed. Personally, I do better with different magnifications from day to day. So say, if you try to use the Mosin Nagant Pioneer, but you can't seem to aim very well with it, try a Mosin with a different magnification level. You may just do better with it.

-Refer to this thread if you are confused about which snipers are equivalent to which

-Watch high-tier snipers such as kimpah or SHAKA play. Watching them can help you learn new strategies and spots that you may have not known beforehand

  • I recommend SVD Zebra over Knut's. Not only is the Zebra cheaper than Knut's but it also features higher rate of fire and similar one-hit kill potential.

General rule of thumb for peek spots is that since your character model is always right-handed, if the corner you are peeking from is on the same side as your gun, you will have an inherent disadvantage like your Dual Sight example.
  • did they nerf the awm? cus i remenber wallbanging all day without any problems
  • Nice post man! B)
  • Personally don't feel like the Silver Arrow is a gun that should be up that list. Let alone it being recommended for people to get. It's just not worth the tagrate the gun has against any sort of armor. Granted it is rather fast on the QS and has decent mobility, i still wouldn't recommend anyone buying it other than for building a collection.

More importantly, the Barret? that gun can't even hit the broad side of a barn when you're standing still. You specifically have to crouch with the weapon to make it accurate. (Don't know who designed that feature, but.. it's kind of.. yknow.)

I guess whoever designed that feature wanted to keep the gun realistic.
Then again all realism is thrown out the window when we have sniper rifles that can accurately move and jumpshot people :^)

All guns have terrible noscope accuracy when standing. I staated that you should crouch with all guns. TPG and Barrett have actually really good noscope accuracies, test it. Check out this video where I showcase some of Barrett's abilities

And I put the silver arrow on there since i thought that it is best for the price, as I did for every currency.
  • I just noticed this guide referred from the recent thread and I do believe needs some updates ever since the new Euro snipers came out ...

For example , new m40a5 is the best overall euro sniper and best for the money too...
And I would argue about the RT best value sniper (sv98 silver arrow) .. I think for the money dsr1 dark angel is best... It's almost no compromise except for very long range ... m1903a yes best overall but it's 400RT and it's still worse close range than dsr1 ...

    Overall nice guide... :+1:

I d like to add this little tip that you might already use... Pushing corners from a distance is very good tip because your model is much smaller the bigger the distance and so the difference from when your arm shows and then your head is minimal ...
For Christ's sake , shiftwalkin with a sniper while hugging the wall is terrible advice for someone right behind the wall... You can suddenly stop and peek while walking but you may make sound while at it and 'Pro 4k Euro headsets (that AVA is full of )' will hear ya...

  • Don't try to do it with the scroll wheel
    why ??

    -Barrett & Railgun

    Worst Wallbang Guns

One Useful Wallbang For Common Demo Maps
All areas within the blue square is penetrable by the Barrett or Railgun
All areas within the red square are penetrable by any gun on the "Best Guns" list above. (Including M40A5 and TPG-1)

    Airplane
Shooting from inside tunnel into Site 1. Use it on offense to kill anyone trying to defuse (must set bomb on left side of site).
    PacaZaQ.jpg

    Aslan
Shooting from mid, virtually anywhere into Site 2.
    JYqkbPO.jpg

    Black Scent
Shooting from warehouse into back of Site 1 or into Mid.
    DQ5vU3B.jpg

    Cannon
Since this map is built like a military base, there aren't a lot of useful wallbangs. So here's 2, one for Barretts and one for normal scopes.
Shooting from "90" to 2 Connector
    gNQAxpn.jpg
Shooting from outside 1 into Site 1
    6a0eYKA.jpg

    Dual Sight
Again, going to give you 2; One for Barretts only and one for other scopes.
Shooting from Top 1 Into Bridge
    Iyeb5gk.jpg
Shooting from "Tank" into Site 1
    dZmpRkV.jpg

    Fox Hunting
Shooting from Site 1 OR "2 Street" into "Red Barn"
    rYOt94u.jpg

    Hammer Blow
Shooting from in Site 1 to virtually anywhere outside of it (and vise versa)
    LPpM6Vd.jpg
Shooting from Double Doors to "90"
    K36y31B.jpg

    India
Shooting from mid through the wall into Site 1. Use it on defense to kill people when you hear them planting the bomb or use it on offense when the enemy tries to defuse.

Thanks for taking the time to go over this guide. I hope you learned at least 1 thing from it :)

I personally don't like using a scroll wheel to quickswitch cause I find it more unreliable. Sometimes I'll scroll too far when switching back to my sniper and mess up everything. Play with what you're most comfortable with but in the guide is what I found to be the best

U see thats the problem , u need to define the scroll so no matter how up u scroll or down it will only make one switch . BTW ( shaka use that )
    in scroll switch u gain
    A. movement - a alot more movement !
    B. its just faster go try it ask for pro players who use that and u will see ( "Zippy" - good buddy ask him )
