Psion : a player's review

edited February 2018 in Player Guides

Hi all,
Psion is one of my favorite class but there are not so many informations about it so I'm offering my own review and insight on the Psion skills.

**1. Pros and Cons : **
1.1 : Pros

  • high mobility :
Either directly (Dash 2, Phantom Blade 2, Deathblossom 2) or indirectly (Saber Slash 3, Blade Dance 3), the Psion is a class that can move fast.

  • multi-hit :
This one is arguable but multi-hit also means multi-crit.

1.2 : Cons

  • no awakening skills :
The lack of awakening skills put the Psion often behind in term of damage output.

  • no spike attacks :
Aside from XL-Caliber, the Psion has no spike attacks. She can't oneshot anything.

**2. Mechanics : **
2.1 : Psychic Swords
The psychic swords are created with Bane Sword, Phantom Blade, Saber Slash, Spinning Blades and Psychic Vortex.
Deathblossom is special as it doesn't forge a sword per se but the Psion can use Sword Abides during Deathblossom.
The Psion uses these psychic swords directly through Sword Abides but also indirectly with Uber Edge and Psychic Storm.

2.2 : Ex Mode
The Psion doesn't have Ex skills like other classes, instead she has an Ex mode. She's also the only class who can fill her Ex bar without hiting anything (with Forge Mastery).

**3. Skills and Playstyles : **
3.1 : Builds
Skill levels provide effects rather than more damages so there's not one build but as many builds as many playstyles.

3.2 : Skills

_Psion Basic Skills : _

Dash :
Recommended : 2, this will give you a boost of speed to dodge or reposition yourself.
Optional : 3, the blink is nice but the cd reduction is the most important.

Bane Sword :
Recommended : 1, its a LMB attack and the damages are as low as expected.
Optional : 3, this will allow you to fill your Ex bar faster and also to perma-cycle your default attack.

Fire! :
Recommended : 1, this skill has no synergy with the Psion mechanics.
Optional : 3, the stun in ultra is situational but can be useful.

Forge Mastery : Max
This skill is so important for the Psion Ex Mode (Uber Edge).

Weapon Masteries :
These skills were introduced as the replacement of the Psion advanced classes. The description is not very explicit as it's supposed to be based on the weapon (pistol, carbine, gun). But there are no informations on which skill is supposed to be bound to which weapon.
The common choice is to max Crit Rate Mastery.

_Psion Class Skills : _

Phantom Blade :
Recommended : 2, the attk speed and move speed bonus is really good.
Optional : 3, this will allow to auto-reposition yourself behind an ennemy (work only against ultra).

Saber Slash :
Recommended : 1, you can do good without using this skill.
Optional : 3, the debuff is interesting and fast to refresh.

Impel :
Recommended : 1, it adds some minor damage buff on your 1st skills (Bane, Phantom and Saber).
Optional : 4, if you spam a lot your 1st skills.

The Sword Abides :
Recommended : 3, the buff works great in combo with Psychic Storm.
Optional : 4, if you use this skill a lot (the bonuses apply only to Sword Abides).

Spinning Blades :
Recommended : 2, it allows you to grab and gather mobs from a longer range.
Optional : 4, the new psychic sword deals good damages with Sword Abides.

Uber Edge : 2
The Psion does lack of iframe. The other effects are not so worth it.

Blade Dance : 4
All effects and the cd reduction are too good to not max this skill.

Wild Shot :
Recommended : 2, to deal more damages.
Optional : 4, it adds an iframe on the 1st shot.

Psychic Vortex :
Recommended : 1, if you rarely use this skill.
Optional : 4, the Psion doesn't have many ultra-break skills, to max this skill allows the Psion to deal more damages against ultra.

DeathBlossom : 3
20 seconds cd reduction is just too good.

XL-Caliber : 4
Max it for max damages.

Psychic Storm :
Recommended : 2, combo with Blade Dance 4 the Psion can use Blade Dance every 3 seconds under Psychic Storm.
Optional : 4, the duration effect is really good.

Comments

  • It's worth noting that Psychic Storm level 3 also puts the max number of forged swords at your disposal, which can charge an empty EX gauge in a few seconds and drop a considerable amount of damage in a little bit of nothing. The duration increase on it is so-so; it'll give you a couple extra i-frames during use, but you wouldn't generally need them. My recommendation would be storm at level 3.

The Uber Edge passive is worth it if you build around utilizing that skill and the buffs you can get to charge rate (and if you don't one-shot everything with XL-Caliber.) One of my current builds charges the EX bar anywhere between 5 and 15 seconds ( 10-15 on average, roughly,) which amounts to a 15-20 second reduction to XL-caliber's cooldown and maybe 5 or 10 seconds for Deathblossom and Psychic Vortex, both of which contribute to a very rapid recharge rate. But it's primary benefit is for XL-caliber--great for longer fights and stages, not so much otherwise.

Wildshot I have to disagree and recommend level 4 just for the iframe. Because it is easily reset to the "first charge" animation if you wait briefly between charges, it actually gives you access three brief iframes in quick succession and then every five seconds after. It is possible to spend almost the entire duration of Psychic Storm in invulnerable state if Wildshot is maxed.

Oh my oh my...There are some things that need to be pointed out here.

Now, I'm not a player who defaults to PvE (I play PvP mostly), though there are few things that need additional insight, and a few things that are wrong completely.

Dash Lv3 gives you 1 second of I-Frame after using the second bit after the initial dash. It's something people overlook,
Fire Lv2 allows you to have a button to push after using most of your skills.
Fire Lv3 is pretty important because that Ultra Break is also a Time-Slow that slows enemies hit by it for 2 seconds...most of the time. (There may be a few situations where it doesn't, like against bosses with Purple Ultra.)

Phantom Blade Lv1 will turn the enemy around to face you. Lv3, If they have Ultra, will ALWAYS teleport you behind them on the second use of the skill.
Spinning Blades Lv4 is one of your strongest skills (before Imprints and Gear, most likely). Especially because you can jump and RMB during it to make them last longer and hit more.

WildShot Lv4 I-Frames are wayyy too good to pass up. Invincibility makes you not take damage. having easy access to several I-Frames one after another is amazing.

  • I've also played around with some builds but I always ran into the same issue, theres just not enough skill points with our current level cap.
Always have to miss out on something good for something else.:P

Personally I don't really use death blossom so I left it at lvl 1,only use it for a bit of extra uber bar, also went with the CRIT dmg passive since its easier to crit cap imo unless you have a maxed out gear for crit dmg.

Imprints could use a mention too since the description for the Sword master is pretty much wrong.
You can use Saber slash 2 times and has an increased range,Blade Dance doesn't have the 'dance' animation anymore but the I-frame is still there after using it.

I'm not yet sure which Imprint I like more but I'm leaning towards the Sword Master cause I really like the range increase and Dancing Blade is stupid strong when you combine it with Psychic Storm's cooldown reduction.

Granted I only play PVE and I'm not comepetetive at any part of the game.

Let me add some corrections then.
Fire!2 positions the Psion at shoot range, i.e. out of range of her main skills.
    Fire!3 doesn't break Ultra.

Phantom Blade 1 will turn the ennemy's back to the Psion.

I've always been curious what Uber Edge 4 could be used for. Thank you for sharing this tip.

Fire Lv2 doesn't move you anywhere. It's just shooting where you currently are all around you. You'll always be in position to use every skill in your kit.

Fire Lv3 does break Ultra, as well as give a Time-Slow effect, unless they have Purple Ultra, in which it does almost nothing, usually. (Based on my experience against Purple Ultra).

Phantom Blade Lv1 will turn enemies to face their back towards you. (Sorry, I messed up my typing there in my last post). Lv3 will take you behind them if they have Ultra.

    I double-check today and you're right about Fire! 2.
Phantom Blade 3 doesn't proc its effect on normal ennemies, the tp behind works only against ultra.

Thought I'd share my build at lvl65 Psion. Personally I have absolutely loved this class! For no other reason than it really fits my play style, and as mention in the OP of this the skills and builds for this class are very very based on how you like to play. I have experimented with many different builds to find the one that suits me best and that i had no problems (after say 10-15 lvls) getting the flow of it and smashing through to 65 in about 9-10 days, playing everything on "insane" difficulty and even managing to get myself a few of the speedrun titles as well. I've played many many mmorpgs but have never had such an enjoyable ride getting to (the old lvl cap) the beginning of endgame content. Found the Psion easy to learn but ever expanding at the same time, really looking forward to her awakening! So enough babble, here's a SS of my build, I welcome any questions or suggestions always keen to see things differently!

I'm not convinced by the efficiency of your Sword Abides 4 or did you went with Dark Slayer Imprints?
Why Psychic Storm 2 if you don't have Blade Dance 4?
