Lag but kind of my fault

Like the title says, I have pretty terrible lag but it's sort of my fault? Because it seems to be coming from my internet.
I'm hoping I can get some help from the guru's here on what I might be able to do about it.

[I understand lag is increased right now due to the new class release, but this has been going on for almost a year now.]
Issues:
Stuttering
Skill lock up
Screen freezing up for 1-5 seconds minimum, 30 seconds being the longest [biggest issue]
Ping fluctuating to odd numbers and never really staying in a general area

I've been playing Tera for around 4 years. Same provider the whole time, AT&T.
A year ago my ping would of been around 80 steady, 89 at the highest.
About 3 months before we all had issues due to the Savvis / Other route I noticed it creeping up into the 90's. Then for the two months the whole game took that hit, I had 100+'s for steady and a lot of jumps to 600.
After they "fixed" it I went back to around 90-150.
Updated my graphics drivers / computer drivers, and it went to a nice 60 [Idky this would have an affect on it.. but okay?]. This lasted for about a month to two months before it skyrocketed back up to 100's. If i had to put a time stamp, it was a day after the dragon armors were released that it seem to go wacky.
Now I'm luck if I can even force it below 98 before it spikes and freezes me up.
It gets WAY worse when more than one device is on now as well. If my roommate gets on her computer when I'm on mine with Tera up? Ooooh boy. hello 4-5k spikes and endless freeze ups. We're both on Wifi, she a laptop and mine a desktop, it feels like when her's is pulled up and connects it'll put priority towards her computer?

If this is a problem on my end with my provider, and it's looking that way, what can I tell them to make them understand what needs to be fixed or looked at?
I've had several house calls and they have yet to make it any better. If anything a few times it's made it worse than before.
I just want this fixed so i can play again...

Here are two different tracetrs.
[This is with the game up, roommates computer on, and a browser up.]

  • The first thing I would recommend to start is to see if it's possible to connect via a wired connection, just to try to remove wireless from the equation entirely.

Second, when your roommate is on their computer, what are they doing? Are they downloading/torrenting movies/music/whatever? Are they streaming Netflix?

I guess before trying to troubleshoot where in the path the issue may be, I would try eliminating all other possible causes. Like, disconnect every other device from the network, plug in your computer with a wire to the router, and do some tests. Under those "controlled conditions" you could have better data to diagnose.
  • The closest to a wired connection I could do for my desktop was something I had bought to plug in that acted as a Ethernet cord. While it seemed to stable out my load time it didn't do much else.
We took her computer which was easier to move around and done a wired connection, things were much smoother and kept a ping in tracerts of around 40. No slips or hiccups. (Idk if it means anything but her laptop is very old. About 7 years.)

When she's online it's mostly Facebook and their games, or pogo a gaming site. And she'll be in it for a fair amount of time, couple hours.
    She rarely does anything else.

Okay, so if a wired connection is much smoother, then I think that at least helps to narrow things down a bit. My guess is that congestion or interference on the wireless channel you're using is part of the issue here (my sister actually recently had the same issue). I don't know if you know how to access the admin page for your router, but it usually has a setting that allows you to change your Wireless channel to a different number. You could experiment with different channels until you find one that is more stable for you.

Ideally if possible it's always better to have desktop computers plugged in directly by wire, but I realize in some cases it's not easy due to walls/ceilings/etc.
  • I've been in that area before a few times. I'll have to remember how to do it.
I suppose just go down the list and try each one for a bit until it stables?

Yeah, unfortunately my computer is to big to move to the living room with the modem. I'm in a small 69' trailer so I'm still close to it just don't have a long enough wire to reach from my room.
  • My desktop does not have a wireless adapter. I bought a 100ft CAT6 cable like, 6 years ago for $10 on Amazon. So regardless of where my modem/router is hooked up, I can run the wire to where my computer is without a problem.
  • Random question but, would the amount of memory being used on a computer affect ping AT ALL.

In a few cases, it could, though you would be more likely to notice client-side slowdown (low framerate/freezing).
  • I have 49% in use when Tera isn't open. When it's up and running the computer is using around 79% memory.

My roommate must of got tired of my grumbling, because she caused a whole nother problem and cut our internet trying to explain to a ATT support without knowing anything. [got it fixed though]
Granted, I'm not tech savvy myself but i told her not to contact them until i got a better idea of what to tell them. The lady on the phone was trying to tell me all the things that could be wrong, and when i said "The ping/ms in my game is nuts when we're both on." she had to ask me what ping is......

Every time i call and try to explain they just scratch their heads like "huh?"
I swear does no one at that company online game....
  • I feel like some "tech representatives" are trained to tell people to turn their modem off/on again.

I feel you on this. I've called so many times trying to explain the situation as best I can and they just sling me through the basic list of things to check. When those things have been checked a million times already. Even tell them this and they just don't listen.
It blew my mind she had to ask "What's ping?"
    Woman, I swear.

Also, thank you for the cord idea !
When i get paid I'm definitely doing that. If it was up to me my modem would be in my room, but sadly that's not happening anytime soon.
Will any cord do really for this?

This is basically the exact cable that's been in service for me since 2011. Places like Best Buy will charge you $30 for like, 15ft.
