What existing server? One would have to be opened specifically for it and maintained every week. Also, you can't just literally "copy and paste" and have it function. Everything would have to be retested. This would require the already extremely small development team to put resources in making it possible, and the already extremely small publishing team to set everything up and manage it.
Popularity is also not even relevant, if it makes no money the amount of people playing there is pointless. Eventually everyone will get tired of it within a week, and there would be nearly no reason to spend much on the server. What are people going to do when they once again finish everything? Tera can hardly last half its current cycle before many people afk in HW and somehow people expect 0 content updates to survive?
You also can't use the same team for both versions, because they would be entirely different games.
as far as people quitting it after awhile, its no different than whats been going on in the regular servers over the past year or 2. after everyone gets their valk geared to the max, they will get bored and quit until the new flavor of the month comes along.
the game engine is still the same then as it is now. I know they have the older version somewhere stored away with all the patches and bug fixes. I know they have the models as well. I doubt very seriously that they deleted everything that was before last weeks patch and update. they could probably go back 3 years ago and read what you typed in global if they wanted to. if they can add and remove the same content whenever they want, like rootstock, dreamstorm, and so on, that means those are stored somewhere and they have easy access to it. so it would be possible that older versions would be there as well. once they implemented it and tested it, they wouldn't need to maintain it because they wouldn't be adding new content all the time. maybe someone checking on it every once in awhile. if they remove an existing server that they have now, maybe fey forest and merge it with another one, like ch, then the people that oversees ch can still oversee the new merged server and the team that originally was working with fey forest can now oversee the new vanilla server once it is created. no new worker needed. and if it doesn't work out for some reason, then they can change it and make it ready for the console server and keep the same team working on it ( the ones that were originally working on fey forest and vanilla server ). again no new jobs needed, and no jobs lost.
wow didn't have any problems with a dead server when they had the vanilla server. the new server would make money cause people wouldn't be able to transfer anything to it. they would have to buy all new stuff. keep crafting in it, have its own cs 30-60 , open world pvp starting at level 11 or so. the new server would be as populated as any other server in tera. it sure wouldn't be the least populated.
even if they added the new classes and balanced out the older ones with the new classes in it, I feel it would do great.
if they allowed someone to do a legacy server, I bet it would surprise you with the amount of people playing in it.
Peopple already get tired of Tera in a week. The Quit rate now is a lot higher than before. You know why? PvE is boring. Once everyone know the mechanic and beat the dung 5/6 times there is no point of go there again. Then u log in, and find yourself trapped in a boring routine. Make CW, make Bams, make ACE, make Lilith/Sanguinary make some hards... Every single day is the same.
PvE is predictible, sooner or later the IA will make always the same. PvP is always new. U re playing against other people, with brains!! some brights, some poor, but brains. Some will exploit class overpower, some not.
-All information on Tera also isn't stored indefinitely like you seem to think, and it's uncommon for companies to keep track of everything. There's a set amount of days they're required to keep somethings, however after that they don't have to and typically don't because saving everything costs money.
-People quitting on the main server means nothing since they spent money and eventually an update brings them back and they spend more, a 0 update server would have no updates to bring them back at all.
Tera's population is small enough to run into the same people, and pvp is more or less the same most of the time. A winning team is determined to win before it starts due to non-existent skill based match making. Matches are determined by which team got most of the experienced players leaving the opposition with a guaranteed loss within seconds. When FWC was popular matches were always determined by the first minute and the team that fell behind would just afk simply due to how wide the gap in skill between each team was. I don't consider slaughter fests after slaughter fests to be "pvp". Tera's horrible pvp is why I ended up actually bothering to play GW2 just to get some non-shooter/moba style pvp because matches there were higher quality on average.
Off course experience is what determinate the fate of the BG, but u know, something after try and try, an inexperienced become experienced.
" really fun ones ", and "but you know, something try and try , an inexperienced become experienced ". exactly. you had fun and if you keep playing as a noob and is crap, eventually you can become really good. when I started cs, I had no clue. my guild master told me to stay with him. he explained to me some of the things before hand, during , and after. then we went back in again, and again, like 10 times. then I started going in without him so I could try to test what I learned....lol. as I played so many times a day I started getting better. I learned about the other classes and how they attacked. I actually learned more on how to play my archer in there than in the pve. then reaper, gunner, and brawler. I learned how to play those classes in cs better than I would have in the open world. and the good thing about level 30 on up cs, you could mess up and make mistakes. you had the learning curve. a legacy server would be nice to have. true we wouldn't get all this newer stuff, but the fun would be there and the elitism wouldn't be as bad. I don't care what others have said above me about it not being able to be done, I believe it could be, its just that they don't want to. if they wanted to bas enough, it would be done.
