For peoole who say this... Mystic related thread.

Who say that the mystic class can not tank with the thrall of protection? Mystics can tank with that summon active. Is the jack of all trades class cus can heal, buff,do damage...and yes, tank. I have the glyph of more defense in that summon. In the cathedral dungeon the lancer guy on the party leaves on the final boss,so i only need to summon the thrall of protection and finish the dungeon.

Actually i am lvl 51 and still i can tank bosses and BAMs with the tank summon. So yes, i like my mystic.

  • It's not that mystics can't tank (at least pre-65), it's that they shouldn't in a party setting that already has a tank. The Thrall of Protection has incredibly high aggro pull, especially before you reach level 65. It can easily mess up a tank and cause them to struggle to do their job in a dungeon if they constantly have to fight for aggro with your summon.

On top of that, the thrall can't be controlled besides incredibly basic functions, which means you can't position a boss or keep it still which can result in a really tough time for DPS players when the boss constantly moves/turns around due to the AI of the thrall.

Using the Thrall of Protection in dungeons when there's already a tank present, or as a replacement for a tank, can make things much harder on the other players in the party as it's mostly designed to assist in solo content in the open world.

Also a little fore-warning, Mystic might seem like a jack-of-all-trades prior to 65, but in endgame content Mystic is almost solely a healing class. The Thrall isn't capable of tanking level 65 dungeon content, and Mystic DPS is nowhere near the damage output what actual DPS classes can output. Meanwhile dungeons begin requiring healers to handle certain mechanics to ensure a smooth run, and also require general healing if the party isn't up to par that will take up most of your time, so even if DPS was a viable option it's not something you have the spare time to do.

While tanking, If I could disable one ability from one class during dungeons it would be Thrall Of Protection.
I despise that thing, saving a dungeon run with it when you have no tank is one thing, having it out on every boss while there is a tank in your group is another.
Glad you could finish a dungeon run with it when your lancer left though, although I do wonder why he left in the first place.
  • Hes been told hes wrong 253563 times. Go ahead and start the count down to the "I got kicked just for using my thrall. My class is a jack of alk trades!" post.

Mystic is really only the jack of all trades for solo content or for content under level 65. As mentioned before, once you reach the end game dungeons, you won't have any time to use any damaging based spell outside of Thrall of Wrath, Boomerange pulse, Contagion, and Volley of Curses. In fact once you get the glyph, most of the time you'll be healing/cleansing your team and then spamming Volley of Curse on the boss for the endurance debuff, so you really aren't any actual DPS in dungeons.

As for tanking, if you have no tank then you probably could use Protection but if you have anyone who can tank...then you really shouldn't ever use ToP unless you use it for the endurance buff glyph. Now if your tank dies and you are far away from him and afraid the boss will aggro you when you run to the tank, then I could see you summon ToP to distract the boss until you revive the tank and then de-summon ToP once your tank is back up again, I've done that before and depending on the boss...in situations like that it could save your team from being wiped.

Not used the ToP in the whole dungeon if that is what you think. Only when the lancer left.
