TERA and the PS4 controller

I'll get right to the point. I would never have suspected my PS4 controller was capable of colluding with the software to make a memory leak. The memory leak is real and PC players can even watch it happen in the Performance tab of the Task Manager. This has caused my game to crash and my computer to freeze up after anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. Lately I have noticed that if I see a real drop in performance (like single-digit FPS for no good reason), all I have to do to extend my session is pull out my controller from its USB port, wait 5 seconds, and put it back in. Instant and significant increase in FPS and a stable game for about another 30 minutes or so. I have done this several times now and it works for me. I hope someone else out there can use this to extend their sessions too. Please let me know what you think...

  • I also use a PS4 controller on PC, but I never used it on USB, only Bluetooth, and never had this problem.

Two different cases.... What drivers you two use for your PS4 controllers? If you know those.
  • I have no idea, it set itself up when I first connected it. I use InputMapper (previously known as DS4windows or something) and all I gotta do is hit the middle button and it's connected. When the battery goes low I just plug it on my phone's charger.

I see. Now to see if OP can give us an answer. Maybe someone with knowledge can also chip in. I'm thinking about a backup for my Steam Controller if it croaks sooner than expected, and I have a PS4 collecting dust at home. I bought it on day one when they got released, and I gave it only a few play sessions and tossed it aside, so the whole thing is pretty new... technically.
  • It's my favorite controller! I'd suggest swapping R1/L1 and R2/L2 though so your hotbar triggers are on R2/L2, feels much less clunky lol

I would recomend Xbox One controler's better.

Just for adding stuff up, may the lucky one here add his insight: I use an Xbox 360 controller with the game, wireless one with the official USB adapter, standard drivers, and no memory leaks. Never needed to disconnect it or such.

This is basically only to say that it's not directly related to "You have a controller? You have a memory leak". Tho it can be seen from 2nd post as well that it's not an issue always. May I also add, the only special keyboard and mouse software I have is Microsoft's own drivers for the Wireless 2000 set (sounds like an MS fanboy, every HID I have is Microsoft huehue), so it does have it's own macro, shortcut and variable speed scroll software, but nothing additional either. I add this here because I've heard of people with some special gaming mice and keyboard that has some software that did cause this memory leak as well, without any controller attached.

A curiosity now: can you configure the PS4 controller's trackpad as a mouse pointer? That would be quite interesting for the interface usage on PC.

Not sure if you can do that throught Steam.
  • You don't have to configure anything, it's a mouse by default as soon as it's connected via InputMapper. Tapping it equals clicking, and pressing it rightclicking, althought that's only really useful for like quest prompts and stuff, if I'm doing things like organizing my bank dragging items around all the time I just use my mouse.

About PS4 vs Xbox controller, there's no "better" or "recommended" one, they are just a matter of personal preference/whatever your muscle memory is more used to.

I still would like to try and get to the bottom of these memory leak issues. I myself played tera using a wired Xbox 360 pad for years and never had an issue. No crashes, no memory leaks. So could it be limited to just a wired PS4 controller? Or a combination of things on OP's PC?

Someone debugged this a few years ago here. It's a bug in the implementation of controller support in TERA that affects certain controllers, Playstation controllers among them. Basically, the fix is to unplug the controller, or I guess as someone mentioned you could try using Bluetooth instead. Otherwise, yeah, Xbox controllers don't exhibit this problem.

Your link is giving a 500 error and I cannot see it. But if there was a debug done to it and it's affirmed that it is what you said, guess the alternative is to indeed use BT.
