I'm Worried About The State Of The Game

I love TERA incredibly much, this game has been with me for such a long time now and no other game has ever caught my attention long-term like TERA did. It's going to be very painful for me to see it go someday, but I at least hope it won't be closing down soon as it seems.

Do you guys think BHS/Nexon will ever do something about the optimization or add in more stuff to do in the game? Or are they slowly going to make TERA rot until it's too expensive to run for EnMasse?

It is no secret that the current BHS is catering too much to its casual playerbase, to the point of removing many things that made TERA really good, like Stamina and other stuff. They really have no idea of what they are doing to the game they created, because the original TERA team that started the game is long gone now.

I always try to stay in the positive side of the matter. We are loosing too much things that will make TERA into another generic MMO if it were not by its signature action combat, but i have hopes that one day BHS will reach out to the players once again to ask them to help make the game fun and engaging again like it was in its first days.
  • I really hope so too. Thank you so much for sharing your insight on the situation! It made me try and think positively too. :)

If you ask BHS, I'm almost certain that -- based on the flop of TERA in the West, the massive layoffs, and the desperate restructuring that barely allowed them to transition into F2P, they see the game in its early days as fatally flawed and untenable. So arguments like "we need to make it more like the early days" are most likely an automatic red flag: "we tried that, and it failed horribly." Obviously it's more nuanced than that, and on a smaller level there are certain elements they might try to bring back. But I doubt they see a return to the past as a key to the future.

More like NCsoft's lawsuit interference caused some major disruption during TERA's early days.

Also, the sheer revenue of NATERA based on 2013 numbers doesn't sound like a flop to me.

That didn't help obviously, but I strongly suspect that was only a small part of their troubles. Of course, I assume they won't ever tell us the whole story...

I've never trusted those numbers because BHS is not publicly traded and doesn't release its financials, so it's only based on unproven estimates that could easily be wrong. But aside that, revenue means nothing without considering cost, and with the amount of layoffs they did, I think cost was the biggest problem. A big part of the transition was finding a way forward with a much smaller staff, and they've talked about how it was those few specific cosmetics that turned the tides.

But anyway, given all they've went through already, I think they've proven that they have staying power despite the turmoil. I at least give TERA a few more years, and by then BHS may be ready with their next flagship product. (With TERA's core technology problems, I don't see them expecting it to have a 15-20+ year shelf life, anyway...)
  • I'm not at all worried that TERA is about to shut down. A game that is bankrupt and about to shut down doesn't start investing in getting ported to consoles, it doesn't invest in flying mounts, it doesn't create new classes every 6 months. I don't think TERA is going away anytime soon.

That being said... the devs might be taking the game in a "different direction" that may not fully appeal to its current playerbase. Blah blah blah, casual OP female locked classes, dumbing down the game, etc. etc. You get the picture. Nothing that hasn't already been said a million times before.

Long story short: I don't think TERA is dying. But it is changing. And undoubtedly some people will be unhappy with what it eventually turns into, regardless of which direction they choose to go in (you can't please everyone after all).
