"Calendar Guy" slacking off again

  • it seems that eme are understaffed or just slacking off;
calendar, forums seem to have minimal supervision, lack of testing for events, very slow support.
    it's sad

EME is not a super big team, and on the grand scheme of things the calendar rewards are not a priority (I should hope so! There are more important things they have to work on, like all the bugs that are happening as a result of the server merge for example).

im sorry but the contrast between before and after is not a good one.
it does not instill confidence in us, the players.
there is a lacking in consistency.

If they can find the time to run internal promotion via the twitch stream every Friday, then they can find the time to sit down and have a discussion about what is going to be affected by these merges and how to avoid late or reduced quality of service.

No, of course in the middle of the merger, I do not want them diverting their manpower to these side details, rather than ironing out bugs. The whole point of this thread, is to say it shouldn't really have reached this point.

It's a bit like running your car, with only 1/2 a tank in it. It doesn't take a massive leap of insight to realise you're better off running it 1/2 full than 1/2 empty, coasting into fill up with only fumes in the tank.

Band-aid solutions are becoming commonplace due to simple lack of invested human resources, and the game is suffering for it. Economies are being crashed by hundreds or thousands of erroneous item drops (mongo). Solutions that were stop-gaps in themselves have require their own band-aids.... requiring even more manpower. So yeah, we can say, this is trivial, and it doesn't really matter, but there's a reason why ecologists look to the frogs in wetlands for clues of underlying change and stress.
  • Keep in mind that they have other projects outside of tera, like launching Ava, which keeps them pretty busy. They do the best they can and things have been smooth for the most part. They did a good job communicating down time for maint and stuff. I will bring up calendar rewards tho and see if we cant get an update on that. o:

Why does this excuse only fly for games? If I were to miss a deadline on a project, nobody would say I have my hands full with other projects so it's OK that I forgot to do this one. But then again...I get paid for work done so I don't make a habit of missing deadlines.

Well, the issue is whether this is really a core feature or a "nice-to-have." I think it's clear that EME sees it only as a nice-to-have and not necessary, hence the staff assigned do it "as time allows." Whether they should see it that way or not is obviously a different question.

Even at work, when times get busy, people will overlook if you're not doing little things you normally do but aren't actually seen as crucial.

Now I want your job. Any job I ever had, when times got busy, I ended up sleeping 2-4h a day....

Depends on the job, not all jobs have equal expectations... teachers for example could miss out on teaching some things they are told to, and not be penalized for it, instead it becomes the responsibility of the teacher next year to make up for it. In fact, a lot of businesses (even governments despite having great influence over a person's life) miss out on finishing a lot of things, it's just only the Gaming Industry is heavily criticized for anything they do wrong.

Funny you should mention teaching... I actually had a teacher who did that, all other classes in my grade got the extra material except for my class. We were all pissed off and the new teacher was pissed off as well, nobody even thought to say "well, she was overwhelmed, so it's understandable she forgot to tell us about *in that specific case it was the past perfect tense in German*." Then, at university, I met people whose teachers had skipped some stuff here and there. They were not happy that I could do my homework in 15min while they needed hours to figure out what they are missing(and often get the wrong answer anyway). My mother is a teacher and she refers to teachers who skip material as "lazy". The only time a teacher gets away with it is if nobody finds out(it doesn't pop up on an exam and it's not required for another subject). If in your country teachers can skip material and nobody bats an eye, that says a lot about the education system and how much people care about it.

Well, even then, most curricula have optional modules, further study pieces, or areas where the teacher is intended to have some flexibility in their approach. Skipping required material causes problems, but not having time for optional material is okay.

The issue in this case is whether filling the calendar is "required" or "optional." I think EME sees it as the latter -- as a "nice-to-have." Fed Bills are the guaranteed daily reward.

From this sentence I take it you're also a project manager like me. If you're also years in this mess, you will also have more than 1 project running. If we now look at EME, they have also multiple projects running.
Filling the calendar is neither a project deadline, not even a milestone, nor as important as a car running out of gas. I surely hope you're not PMP (or else) certified to draw comparisons like this.

I have this weird feeling I'm the only one who can understand the way EME works. This apparently is the same way my work is constructed; we have priorities and the lesser priorities just fall down/are on hold. In industries, this is quite normal. So I cant understand how some of you think they "slack off". I take it these people apparently have a "slack off job" themselves; I'd be fired if I would drink coffee while our B2B customers storm the office. Also it is quite normal that my workload always exceeds 100%, so there's always something not done at work.

About the comparison with Twitch: We had this time when Tonka and Minea were leaving. The new CM (I forgot her name) jumped in but Twitch just was cut. This was a real damage done to the community-publisher relation and in my opinion, they did right with highly prioritizing Twitch/PR. So dont think that twitch streaming is just hopping any minute into the seat from your coffee break and you're good to go.

Just recently I watched a TV show, playing in a hospital (I never watch TV). As I was working as a paramedic when I was young, I know what the personnel does. In this show the MDs just sat in some comfortable leather seats, drinking coffee and a relaxed discussion about one single patient. This is NOT how reality works.
