Returning Founder, entirely disappointed. New players beware.

I decided to come back to TERA after a couple of years, because I can't afford WoW or FFXIV currently. Though I'm not a fan of the aesthetic, I remember being a huge fan of the combat system. So I reinstalled, rolled a gunner, and hopped in. I was surprised to find the starting zone entirely different, but that wasn't too bad and the combat was just as satisfying as I'd hoped it would be! Which was great, because games like WoW actually really bore me, combat-wise. The problem arose when I completed the prologue and got to one of the early quests: Kill 3 Boars, or bears, or whichever. As soon as I exited the tunnel from the first town into the field with the mobs, there were 2 high-level players one-shotting everything. I even moved away from them a bit, and one of them followed me and stole all of my kills. After which, he did what I can only assume is the TERA equivalent of tea-bagging. I took it up with him, and he replied, "What? I need to farm."

I can handle rude players. What I can't handle is this huge red flag - that he was farming. In the newbie zone? Preventing starting characters from completing quests? I cannot, for the life of me, fathom why a game designer would ever allow incentive for a high level player to farm in a newbie zone! That's a horrible oversight, not to mention a depressing vision of what awaited me if I'd been able to make any progress! I think it's in my best interest to uninstall, and I'll be encouraging those I know to stay away from TERA as well. Previously when I'd tried to play TERA (various occasions), I really enjoyed it. But now, I can't even break level 5. The condition of this game and it's poor design choices does not bode well. If you're not an active player with a high level character, you ought not to play at all.

@ Game Devs, for god's sake, NEVER have a reason for high levels to farm a low level area. That's so bad. So so bad. Please, fix this.

There are 4 channels in Stepstone Isle. At the top right you can switch channels freely.

This. There really should be a tip at some point while going through the tutorial though. Maybe something like "Too many players around to get kills for quests? Try changing channels!" with an arrow blinking at the channel dropdown.

I've honestly never seen this happen on any of the characters I've run through this particular zone either, so it's definitely not a common occurrence.
  • I can see your perspective on this, however you took a trolling player at his word. He wasn't farming, he was basically griefing a starting zone. But as the others above have pointed out, that's why it's nice there's separate channels for you to switch to, so you can avoid these kind of issues/players altogether.
