New Computer Build Specs

Hello everyone

I am working on a new computer build and will be playing TERA along with a few other MMORPG's. I just had several questions as I do the build.

1. How well will an i5-4460 work with this game?
2. Which motherboard would be better to use: MSI Z97 PC Mate or ASRock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer?
3. What kind of performance increase can I expect with 16GB of RAM as opposed to 8GB?
4. How well will an Radeon R9 380 work with this game?
5. I am going to use Windows 7 for this build. Will there be any difference between Home Premium and Professional? Also, for you guys using Windows 7, do you keep all your important/optional updates up to date or is there some that cause problems with the game? I am just not sure if I can keep Service Pack 1 only or if I should keep everything up to date all the time.

Thanks.

go for full amd, or for full intel+nvidia

i recommend for this game, full amd.

I have AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU and I'm running game pretty good at close to max graphics.

What is your reason for this?

Go full Intel + Nvidia. Graphic card doesn't matter nonetheless for TERA.
But with Nvidia card you may play other games at higher settings.

P/S: TERA doesn't run well on AMD's CPUs.
P/S 2: Your listed specification are fine.
  • 1. It will do fine. It's a recent quad core intel cpu with okay clocks. You'll do fine.

    2. Go with he asrock just because of the two more 3.0 ports and the colour scheme. Gray/blue mobos are awful looking to me. Besides, the red/black asrock board will go nice with most R9 380s.

    3. No difference. There is not a scenario in which you will need to use ALL of the 16 gigs with your specs while gaming and doing other stuff at once. If you play to do heavy content creation/video editing, go for 16 gigs. Or if you have the money already, get the 16 gigs just to be future proof.

    4. Don't worry about that. Tera runs like [filtered] on every GPU. An r9 380 is a mid tier card, nothing more nothing less. You can expect to get max settings on 1080p on must older AAA titles, with some shadows and effects turned down. In today's modern games you can expect 60fps at medium settings on modern titles like Battlefield1 and such. You can pull off high textures but then you gotta cut down the particle effects and some other settings, but it should be a very playable experience for somebody that doesn't require the best and greatest. Check out this r9 380 , 130 bucks on sale for the next 2 days. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

    5. Please please please pleeeeeeaseeeeeee don't use win7. Please. Just get win10 for piratebay if you can't afford to buy it. Your life will be about 500% better. Trust me. Talking from experience of 5 years on win7. Win10 will make your life so much easier. I won't go into detail on why 10 is better, there is google for that. If your heart is set for 7 then go with pro. Just because, idk if there are any differences.

, im sure you are going to say " thats is impossible, if you have a 1060 GTX NVIDIA, how can you have freeze playing tera???? you are trolling us "

    rofl

The issue is unlikely due to just the Intel/Nvidia combo otherwise I would have problems. My GPU is also a GTX 1070 with a 6700k OCed and I have no problems with the game other than it crashing due to the memory limit. I have played Tera with 9 different combinations of hardware and the Intel+Nvidia out performed all AMD+AMD or AMD+Nvidia. Certain AMD GPUs are known to have problems with Tera with low end Nvidia cards having stuttering problems. As for CPU, it's obvious why Intel sees better performance of equal tier. AMD is based on multi-core performance while Intel went the single core performance with less heat/power consumption. Tera can't utilize enough cores, otherwise AMD would be better sicne Intel still has duo/quad cores for the mass market while AMD has 6/8 core options. AMD is only better if the Intel it is being compared to is inferior or the GPU in the Intel machine is causing problems, because as I said many times before, GPU can cause stuttering problems on Tera even if your CPU is just fine. For example this desktop as I said is a 6700k+GTX1070 while my other primary desktop is a 6600k+GTX960 )both use reference edition cards) yet the desktop with the 6600k sees stuttering problems in dungeons or during certain parts of the games where the 6700k doesn't. However, both CPUs are oced and perform relatively the same, with the main difference being the 1070 vs 960 and the RAM clock speed, but even then, it's the 6600k machine that has faster RAM.

AMD is also only better when there's no dedicated GPU, as their non-dedicated setup tens to be better, however, we're talking about machines with a dedicated GPU.

    1. How well will an i5-4460 work with this game?
Should be fine, although I would get the Skylake i5 depending on your budget, it's ~20$ more and getting DDR4 RAM. Normally it's better to go with recent hardware when you're building a new machine since you're getting a new motherboard anyways.
    3. What kind of performance increase can I expect with 16GB of RAM as opposed to 8GB?
Depends on what you do while playing Tera, having multiple applications and a browser opened means 16GB would be better. I normally use ~10GB of RAM for example. If all you have running is Tera then 8GB is fine.
    4. How well will an Radeon R9 380 work with this game?
    I would recommend a GTX1060 over it.
    5. I am going to use Windows 7 for this build. Will there be any difference between Home Premium and Professional? Neither makes a difference for gaming. It's also better to keep it updated, as some issues popup otherwise.

  • First of all, Intel CPUs and Radeon GPUs are the best combo for Radeon graphics cards (CPU overhead on Radeon drivers favors Intel's CPUs IPC).
TERA favors Nvidia GPUs, mostly because of Unreal Engine.
The parts you listed are kinda out dated and, for this reason, "overpriced" compared to newer parts.
I used PCPartPicker to gather a newer parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Y6mXVY
If you wanna replace the Radeon RX 470 with a GTX 1060 3GB, TERA would prefer, but putting together a computer just to run TERA is kinda lame.

I don't think there is problem to combine Intel with Amd. I been able to run i7 960 with rx290 on my old machine for last 3 years. My recent new machine runs i5 6600K 3.5 ghz with msi rx 480 and tera does so well even without any tweaks. At first I remember going with AMD fx 8350 before switching to i5 6600K and tera did not work very well. I spent many hours trying as many tweaks as possible and nothing helped. Also when I tested other games, I felt I wasn't getting the full experience. Thus the reason why I switched to the i5 and it was the best move I made. Many people have trouble running Tera on AMD cpu and even with many tweaks, it still doesn't help or fix.

    1. i5-4460 is a good choice; Tera runs great on i5 cpu's.
    2. Both motherboards seem to be a good choice but I'm not sure which one I'd go with. Aesthetics wise, I really like the Asrock.
    3. 16gb is nice to have but not required. May notice a small difference.
    4. R9 380 should work fine. My 5 year old pc with r9 280 runs pretty decent on preset 5 with some tweaks and shadows off. My new pc runs with msi 480rx with i5 6600k and it's amazing. As what some mentioned above, gtx 1060 or rx470 might be a good choice as well if the price is not that far off depending on budget.
    5. There are differences but both shouldn't have much effect in terms of playing Tera. It's been a while since I used windows 7 at home but when I updated to SP1 in the past, I believe it included all the recent updates in it. Can't really say if it will cause issues for the game. But it's usually best to keep windows up to date. I actually use windows 8.1 and keep my updates on but it's set to notify me before installing.

Also sometimes if you see the parts on pcpartpicker, the price sometimes might be lower than what it usually displays (this could be for memory, video card, cpu, mobo, etc). I'd recommend fully checking different areas like at a local microcenter if there is one near by or different websites as sometimes the price is lower than what is advertised. Like on pcpartpicker about a month ago, i5 6600K was 229 at the time but I got mine for 199 at microcenter.

    I agree with Treyvan
  • TERA is unoptimized so you pretty much have to use brute force to get decent performance. The CPU looks good spec wise and 8 or 16 gigs of ram makes no difference for TERA or most games in general (at least for now). The card is fine but if possible I'd advise to get an Nvidia card, they generally tend to run dx9 games significantly better that AMD offering.

i wonder how many guys tested TERA in different setups

i tested it in 5 setups

    but sure

    go for " intel + amd "

    hahaha

I've few machine varies from Intel, AMD, Nvidia and AMD's GPU. Sure AMD is a great processor but not for TERA.
Meanwhile my old laptop i5-430M + AMD Radeon HD 4330 from 2010 still could outperform my AMD APU from year 2012 and 2015 with/without graphic card.
AMD + Nvidia might be good for other games though.
  • My pc build running TERA, TW 3, DS 3. etc in high to ultra settings 1080p :
    Mobo--->Gigabyte 990XA UD3 R5
    CPU--->AMD 8370 8 cores 4.0 Ghz (4.2 OC)
GPU--->MSI Nvidia GTX 960 4Gb OC edition( ultra silent, btw)
    RAM--->8Giga corsair vengeance
CPU Cooler--->Xigmatek Dark Knight II SD 1483 (2 more fans in the case's front and another one in the back)
    https://youtube.com/watch?v=GgYOh8XnAcY&t=41s
  • I've tested TERA on my personal rig along the way of various upgrades (on 1080p resulotion):
AMD Phenom II X3 (triple core) @ 2.6GHz with a Geforce GTX 560 - graphics on preset 3, usually around 30fps. AMD weak single core performance and IPC hurt mostly because on Scaleform's UI. Disabling the UI showed some FPS gains.
Intel i5 3470 (3.2GHz base clock, 3.6GHz boost clock) with a Geforce GTX 560 - graphics on preset 3, usually around 50fps. Intel IPC payed off big time. Game got smoother to run, UI was no longer a big issue.
Intel i5 3470 (3.2GHz base clock, 3.6GHz boost clock) with a AMD Radeon RX 480 - graphics on preset 5, usually around 50fps. TERA doesn't favor Radeons much, on crowded places, FPS gets low. Had to disable some visual options under .ini file to make game more smooth on big cities.

If you play mostly DX9 and DX11 games powered by Unreal Engine 3 and 4, Nvidia is the graphics card to buy from, as the engine favors heavily the GPUs from them.
With any other game engines and newer games, that are starting to use DX12 and Vulkan, AMD GPUs are showing big gains in performance.
Buy the one that gives you the best perf/dollar.
  • FYI.. 1st quarter of next year AMD will release Ryzen, it's first CPU complete overhaul in a decade, as well as newer GPU's. Ryzen is said to be an Intel killer. Complete with single instruction per cycle instead of the usual 2 cycles. Not a lot of info on Ryzen at the moment, but what there is sounds pretty impressive.

Tips: Never ever read @Dhrizzit 's post, yet every single post he made were [filtered] (he also got temp banned for that).

    Quick answer:
GPU: Setup is fine, but I would go GTX 1060 as well as a few mentionned... first not much of a difference pricewise and second, better performance (on other games than Tera).
For AMD VS Intel, I'd say Intel droped price recently, so in matter of high capacity CPUs, they're pretty even since Motherboard for AMD usually are more expansive. Most company base themself on how Intel works over how AMD works, even if AMD would be better for gaming... they fell behind and that is a very sad story :(
RAM: For Tera, go 12-16GB, not bellow cuz of memory leak, if you wanna play a few hours in a row with one or two more programs running at the same time (Discord/Teamspeak + browser for example). RAM isn't usually expansive, even less since we speaking of DDR3, go with 16gb.
Motherboard: Please consider that the 2 mentionned are okay, beside, MOBO in general are a matter of brand BIOS preferences. I very like Asus so I stick with Asus MOBO, but I don't believe there are much bad motherboard anymore. Read comments on PCpartpicker if you need more details :)
