4 newbie questions before I play Tera.

Is this game still active with a decent population?

Is there even a point in starting it this late on, like will I ever be able to catch up?

Is this a pay to win game?

Is there open world PVP, and how is it?

  • Would love for someone to at least answer one of my questions...

The game does not have the population it once had, but it is not dead. The population is divided over various content and depending on what class you decide to play (and what time zone you're in), you may have long queue times for some content. As with most trinity-based MMOs, DPS classes are most common, while tanks are most in demand.

The gear cycle resets regularly, so it's always possible to catch up. There's rarely a bad time to start as far as that goes.

In general it is not pay-to-win. There are dragon mounts that have a passive skill that occasionally procs and provides a momentary boost. This does not impact PvP battlegrounds. It is possible to buy the mount from someone else using gold. It is possible to earn everything in game with only gold, but cash shop purchasing can speed up the road to get there.

There is not much open world PvP these days. It exists, but is not super-common. Most of the PvP content is contained in instances.

    1. The game is decent yes. Population wise? It is in decline, i wont deny it, but is always something like this: New stuff comes out > Population increases > Stuff gets beaten > Population decreases due to not having anything else to aim towards, so they either take a break or quit, most of the times will just go for break, because you see them once the cycle starts again. I advise you to take stuff at a moderate speed, so you do not run out of goals to aim towards. Part of why this happens is because people beat the stuff so fast, in like the first few days of patch, that they just get bored, so they take their break until another patch arrives. If you have no goals to aim towards, the game becomes dull.

    2. You can start anytime you want. Leveling up to 65 is fairly easy and can be done in matter of days, probably around 3 to 4 days if you play it normally, or 24 hours if you are super hardcore. You can catch up with no problems, just be sure to learn well your class while you level up so you are not clueless of what to do once you arrive at level 65 and want to gear up.

    3. By definition, the game is not Pay To Win. The topic has been brought up a lot recently with some additions, but in the end, people have different opinions about what is really Pay to Win. If i have to put it short, the only item that canbe considered as Pay to Win is the Dragon Mount from the loot boxes, as this dragon gives you a buff that doubles your critical power for 5 seconds, and it triggers quite often from my experience. Others will tell you that game is Pay to Win because you can actually buy the top gear in game, by selling EMP to other players and use the gold earned to buy the gear you want. This has caused too many controversy, but ultimately, it is not Pay to Win, because someone went through the trouble of making that piece of gear. Other than that, the only stuff you will find in the shop is purely cosmetic and QoL items such as boosters.

    4. Open World PvP exist, but no one does it anymore on the PvP servers. This is mainly due to the recent change to the biggest PvP server, that got turned into a PvP at level 65 only, to avoid ganking of low level players. Players from that server will tell you that Open World PvP was killed with this change, but in reality, you can still PvP in open world, but only against other level 65s. The rest of the PvP is either duels or instance based. Large Scale PvP happens once a week during the Civil Unrest. You have to join a guild if you wanna participate of the event.
  • So the only time I can pvp is @ level 65 or if Im in a once a week instance or a duel?
  • 1. Population is sufficient for me to pop all mid and low tier dungeons that I personally play, as well as the leveling battleground kuma royale.

    2. Some years ago, Tera made a cut to let the newer players catch up. I know this situation from other MMOs where you have absolutely no chance to catch up to older players. In Tera, you can catch up anytime, because we have shortcuts (e.g. you dont need to progress through several equipments but get T9 gifted)

    3. In my opinion, not even the dragon is P2W. Because it is made tradeable and you can easily farm the money and buy the dragon guaranteed. You have to put ZERO real dollars in a dragon. So, Tera is more a Pay-to-Swag game.

    4. Unfortunately, you wont be ganked from oneshotting maxlevels as you level to 65, openworld below 65 has been disable recently. There are also equalized battlegrounds you can join with lvl20. If you're looking into an MMO with focus on PvP, Tera is not the game for you. We also don't have community balancing like BnS where you just zerg the other fraction with sheer numbers. Tera is more of a carebear sandbox, trying to balance out frustration factors.
  • 1) The game is still plenty active.

    2) Since you'd be new to the game, I'd highly suggest trying to get in with a guild early on to show you the basics, but yes you can definitely catch up. Also, take a look at essentialmana.com to check out the details on the class you're considering.

    3) Plenty have arguments on this, but ultimately no it isn't.

    4) PvP is where the game is probably hurting the most; balancing issues and being restricted to level cap makes owpvp almost nonexistent and BGs are rarely used unless there's a shiny carrot dangling to get people to enter.
