It's referred to as America, and the people Americans, for simplicity. Simplicity tends to come before technicalities. There's also the fact it's not like non-US citizens have really been referred to as Americans anyways on a grand scale, so there's no harm in the US being called America. When most people see the words America or Americans they think of the United States, not Mexico, Canada, Brazil, etc.
We should adress history to know the reason is called America and Americans, however now days is the common way to call the US citizens for the rest of the world, being lead for ignorance because before US were what is it now ppl on Europe refer to America to the North if they were British or to the Central and South if they were portuguese or ppl who spoke spanish there (Spain, Portugal).
What we have now for only US citizens being called Americans is just a custome and almost a Technicality.
Sure he will not push that becuase right now petroleum price is the first issue for how has been droped over the world and lead to crisis for 3rd world countries.
