Suggestion for TERA tutorial
Before start, I have been thinking of this suggestion for a long time and tried to write down by myself. However, I found myself not enthusiastic about this cuz I am just a player, not a developer or volunteer for this. But I just decided to paste that I have been writing until this morning in order to remind BHS/EME to start considering this. It is just a draft suggestion. So there is no useful information for forum users. I just want BHS/EME to chill with this and make good tutorials to help new players settle down playing TERA. Sorry for the HUGE wall of TEXT if you are surprised by it.
I would leave this suggestion in General discussion rather than Suggestion forum just because I would like to hear from forum users about this idea in general. Sorry if you think I am breaking forum rules.
Let's begin...
1. Purpose
The life of a game really depends on the population of players. However, not all users play a game forever and they will eventually quit due to many reasons as we all know. And if the population of the game becomes lower, developer and service provider will not be able to make much profit from it and will cause less investment on it and, eventually, the game will be dead and terminated.
Therefore, developer and service provider have to consider to bring new players to their game in order to make the game more popular and manage it well and, of course, to make more profit.
So, let’s talk about TERA specifically. Some people will not agree with me, but TERA is pretty well-made game and still populated compared to lots of other games. But apparently, TERA is getting dead day by day. One of the reasons for that might be; 1. Old users quit TERA, 2. There are not many new players, 3. New players quit TERA very quickly because they are struggling lots of things in game.
I am pretty sure EME/BHS always ponder how to manage these problems well like other Devs and service providers. However, in my point of view, there is still a big barrier for new player to settle down playing TERA for some reason. So I would like to suggest some tutorials for the new players(which is for #3 of the reasons that I mentioned above) so that they can solve some possible issue that they are struggling in game.
2. Issues on new player
Unfortunately, I am not talking about the in-game contents but talking about some BASIC stuff that can help new players.
So, what makes new players struggling with gameplay? One of the major reasons is their “Gear”. For hardcore players and so-called p2w players do not have any issue on getting endgame gears like Ambush +15s. However, it sounds like a dream for new players without spending a lot of money. That is because the materials for endgame gears drop only in endgame dungeons(like RMHM and HH) and it is really hard for new players to find a party in order to run those and get endgame mats. Well, at least NA TERA organizes some great event like Teramon Go and Battleground jackpot in order to help them to get their mats. So my guess is EME manages about this issue pretty well.
However, as we all know, Gear is not everything in TERA. New players still struggle with proper glyphs, dps rotation, and crystals at the beginning of their gameplay. And, unfortunately, there is not enough tutorial or guide in game for those problems. People can easily find a good player guide by searching google, but please do not assume that every player put an effort to find a guide out of games.
I always do lots of IMS and LFG for variety of things in game(mostly everything but HH). And when I inspect the applicant(for LFG) or matched party members(for IMS), I realised that too many people use wrong crystal set and wrong awkward dps rotations especially in easier dungeon like CW and SSNM. Sometimes I point out their wrong crystal sets for their weapon/armor or some basic dps rotation, but lots of them just ignored. And one of the ridiculous things that I heard from them was this;
“It does not matter for this easy dungeon”
Well, that is completely true. I can clear CW by solo dps (if I can run it alone) faster than a party of 3 new player with wrong crystal/dps rotation. And CW or SSNM are way easier so it is not that hard to clear it with low performance. But think about it, doing dps/tanking with wrong crystal/glyph/gear options/dps rotation means simply low dps and they will eventually be struggling with harder dungeon if they do not fix their problem even if they have way better gears. Indeed, getting proper crystal, glyphs, dps rotation is the priority way to improve their in game performance. However, TERA does not teach that in game. Well, there is a “Help window”, but it is not helpful at all, and “Welcome message” has some crystal tip but people barely read that and do not know how it is important for the performance.
Therefore, TERA have to consider to make a great ingame tutorials for new player about their crystal, glyph and basic dps tip. And here are my suggestion for that.
3. Suggestion for tutorials - all Class
3.1 Weapon Crystal
In the tutorial room, there is one monster which does not move at al and is not enraged. Players get a tutorial weapon (with 100% crit rate) and tutorial weapon crystals (like Focused, Bitter/Spiteful/Wrathful, Savage, Forceful, Pounding, Carving, etc). They can equip only tutorial gears and all the stat bonus (from everything) is ignored.
They can use only assigned dps skills in the room and can hit the monster only once. Now, they have to deal a certain amount of dmg in order to pass the tutorial. It should be a dmg with full back crit (like savage+bitter/spiteful) to deal a certain amount of dmg.
Next step is for enraged monster. The monster enrages and players have to deal more dmg by back critting with additional focused crystal in order to pass the tutorial.
Next step is for frontal dmg (for tank). Similar as above. Put wrathful and front crit in order to pass, and then wrathful+focused (and/or +2 poundings), front crit to pass the tutorial.
Next step is advanced tutorial. Now the monster turns towards the player and does an long-term animation. Players have to get behind the monster(by ifame or any mobility skill) and deal a certain amount of dmg(=back crit) with correct set of crystal (as described above) before the monster finishes its animation and turns towards the player again.
Now they learn how important back crit and crystals are.
3.2 Armor Crystal
In the tutorial room, there is one monster which keeps attacking(with 0% crit rate) but does not move at all. Players get a tutorial armors and crystals (Hardy, Relentless, etc). Now players have to get hit by the monster once and survive in order to pass the tutorial which means they have to put 4x Hardy crystals (or combination with relentless) on their armor. If they wear wrong crystals like Vigorous or Empyrean, they cannot survive from the monster’s attack and get one shot.
4. Suggestion for dps combo - Class specified
Players get a tutorial weapon(100% crit rate) and armors and crystals when they enter the tutorial room. They can equip only tutorial gears and crystals, and all the stat bonus (from everything) is ignored. And there is a dummy punch bag that player can hit with an assigned skill.
4.1 Archer
# Sniper’s Eye and Velik’s Mark
Players can hit the dummy only with thunderbolt, but they have to deal a certain amount of damage to pass the tutorial which should be with sniper’s eye and velik’s mark on the dummy. This may also require dmg glyph on thunderbolt in order to deal a certain amount of damage.
# Overcharging
Player can hit the dummy with radiant arrow, but it should be fully overcharged in order to deal a certain amount of damage and to pass the tutorial. And this tutorial can be applied for penetrating arrow as well. This may also require dmg glyph on penetrating arrow in order to deal a certain amount of damage.
# Find Weakness
There is a new dummy which does not show its back like ghiliglade. Players have to deal a certain amount of dmg by thunderbolt with find weakness + velik’s mark + sniper’s eye + correct back crystals. This may also require dmg glyph on thunderbolt in order to deal a certain amount of damage.

There are three dummies spamming AOE attack and standing close. Players have to stun one of the dummies by staggering counter and then stun them all by cascade of stuns in order to pass the tutorial.
# Scythe with 10 stacks

4.4 Brawler
# Roundhouse Kick combo
It requires “Grounding Roundhouse Kick” Glyph. The dummy starts attacking 1 sec after it gets hit by players. Players have to use roundhouse kick + Jackhammer, Piledriver, or Haymaker combo in order to attack and block the dummy at the same moment and to pass the tutorial.

The dummy is casting a lethal AOE attack. Players have to sleep the dummy with Ishara’s Lullaby within 10 sec in order to stop the dummy and to pass the tutorial.

1. Unless the game's progression system is overhauled, implementing this tutorial does not ensure retention of the knowledge learned. Why? Because you don't have access to all your skills at early levels; you unlock them slowly as you level up. Some people might also just rush through it (aka just mindlessly doing what the onscreen tips tell you to do without actually bothering to actually learn anything) just to be able to start their adventure faster.
2. Taking the "Tenacity" example from Archer, how are players going to get out of the mob's AOE if they get stunned indefinitely? If your solution is to make it such that the stun only applies once every particular interval, then the player can still just facetank the stun, pick up the item, and complete the tutorial. Not to mention that for the really newbie players (who might have just started their first MMO) or high ping players, they could panic and not know what to do when they get stunned, get pissed off after trying to get out of the stun for some time, and just quit the game altogether cuz they cant progress anymore and think it's a badly designed game.
3. Forcing players to learn certain combos might lead them to think that those are the only ways the skills should be used, which might cause them to overlook that some combos should be used situationally. Then when it comes to endgame content where people start confronting them about force-casting such combos all the time, even in bad situations, they might start saying things like "That's what the tutorial taught me", get fed up, and quit the game.
Even if BHS could actually be bothered to make a new tutorial, if these problems cannot be reliably resolved, I doubt they would do anything either.
1. Yes, I also thought about this issue. Initially, I thought to put this tutorial(s) as players level up. However, as you pointed out, TERA characters unlock their skills as they level up so this tutorial(s) possible do not work for all class. In order to solve this problem, Devs have to revamp TERA characters' level up process with new tutorial which Devs do not really want. My guess is to put this tutorial(s) like at Lv65 instead of (or in addition of) IoD story quest, and give players some useful rewards instead of stupid idoneal gears.
2. It is not that hard to solve this problem. For Archer's Tenacity tutorial, Devs can easily set up the quest condition like the tutorial resets when players get stunned. The goal of this tutorial is not to get stunned with Tenacity buff and in order for players to learn how tenacity works. Same mechanic can be applied to other tutorials too. If players do not acquire the tutorial's goal, simply it will reset and start over.
3. Well, that was kind of my wrong choice of word. I used "DPS ROTATION" which sounds like some dps rotations built by other players, not by Devs. However, what I meant and what I suggested were just intentionally built in combos. For example, Lancer's wallop can be used faster when it is used after debilitate, 2x shield barrage, spring attack, or charging Lounge. But I have seen so many new players just use wallop without chaining it because they have never read skill description. So I just want for new players to learn basic chain skill combos by the tutorials spontaneously instead of forcing them to search/read a guide.
In addition, the major reason that I started thinking about the tutorial was..CRYSTAL. In IMS, and LFG applicant for low-tier dungeon, too many people (it is really "too many") do not know what crystals work better for their performance and how "back crit" is important in TERA dps. I know making a new tutorial can bother Devs and they would rather focus on "new contents" instead of the tutorials. However, TERA is slowly getting dead and needs new players in order to keep active and popular. And Devs need to break the barrier for the new players to settle down in TERA.
It might be performed in dungeons or on a specially selected bam
"You must clear this dungeon/bam doing a minimum of this much DPS and taking this maximum amount of damage or you will not pass level 30"
Not 100% sure how you would handle healers, would need to have a think about it, but DPS/Tanks are easy to handle.
People would need to read challenge guides to figure out how to progress.
A system like this would be nice too. Warframe has a very similar system, just that you do not actually level up or get stronger. You pretty much rank up weapons and stuff until you unlock your next Mastery Rank which is a test of skill that cannot be skipped. You either pass it or fail it and if you fail it, you cannot do it again for the next 24 hours. With every Mastery Rank, it comes a new skill test. What you suggest is fairly similar: To test all that you have learned in TERA from level 1 to say 30 in a specific dungeon or task, otherwise you cannot progress.
I like the idea, but it would need careful implementation.
This. If everything through leveling is slowed down and made aherder, then people have to learn their classes. Obviously, it would be good to give them some tips along the way - maybe that little fairy thing could actually say something useful.
Personally, I'd go about it as a return IoD (Since it was much nicer and I've seen the new tutorial do a pretty good job of turning people away), and replace the bomb trainer (as bombs no longer exist) with a combat trainer, who can teleport you to basic instances based on your class, and give you tips for your class as you go through the quest that takes you to them (Probably as part of those instances, so people actually read them). Then, of course, a difficulty increase and quest amount/length increase after you leave the tutorial (Bring back Fey Forest and Valley of Titans, at least), giving people both time and reason to really learn their classes.
@JasonTERA Might've missed the draft part but it was still a nice concept. I was just sharing what I found to be potential stuff that might cause new players to quit.
1. Putting it at 65 would be a good idea. Only problem I foresee is that some players might still choose not to do it even with useful rewards ("useful" is a relative concept), or they don't know such a tutorial exists.
2. If they could do something like that, then the problem would be solved. I highlighted this since I don't recall any dungeons that feature such a "get out of jail" feature. They could, however, spawn something like Yana's portals to force you out of the aoe once the game detects that you're stunned.
3. Yea it really sounded like you meant player-suggested combos. However, my point still stands unless the tutorial specifically tells players that using these combos will allow you to cast certain skills faster, but they do not have to use them all the time (eg. for Spring Attack, you would normally use Shield Counter/Shield Barrage/Debilitate/Shield Bash to chain into it, but if you see the boss preparing to hit you, you should stop chaining and block instead.) I'm pointing this out since common sense isn't so common nowadays.
no all players use spacebar chains, and somes use more sorcuts ( im left handed )
