Short version: it's certainly doable. Rotations may be sub-optimal, but you'll be fine.
I must say I'm curious to see how it'll work
Have you guys heard of a game called Marvel Heros? Yeah, this game was patched like a month or two ago to be compativle with consoles. The game obviously got destroyed and became a trash. The natural abilities of some heroes like teleporting was given a cooldown and in general it was simplified for people with... consoles. Many players left, rated the game unplayable. Unfortunately, even if the change wont be that bad as it was in MH, it still will be bad. Dont expect anything good.
EDIT:
The best solution without changing anything for kayboard and mouse players would be controler detection. Once you plug in your controller all the skill bars, screen rotation and movement changes to be easier for controler users. But i do not think someone as smart as this will do this so im really eager to see it from healers point of view.
A + lockon heal + camera move.
Again, i do not think this is such a good idea.
lol this!
...eh?
I think TERA supports controller, and has controller players, since start. Like I said, and all other controller players said: there's really no edge on playing between the 2 input methods. Mouse rotates faster, controller casts skills easier without so much hand movement/tons of shift combinations. Ease of reaching the skill key can be overcome with shift and such, movement speed is overcome by good positioning (which will improve your game in many other ways as well).
There certainly are games that make merging console players and PC players terrible, namely FPS ones. But TERA combat system itself is controller friendly at it's core, aim or not. The only grief I have for controller is UI operation, the drag and drop is a pain in controller, the rest is pretty great.
Also: the occasional issue where a skill may trigger like a chain, whatever key you press. This has been getting rare for me but happens every now and then.
By the way controller detection is a thing in TERA, the movement speed of camera on the analog sticks is decent as well.
From a healer's point of view: it's pretty much perfect. I'll be honest to say that I can't use ALL skills on it, just as all skills don't fit the standard full skill bar (controller allows the full skill bar usage, but no extra bar), but granted that you don't actually need a separate key for each buff, Velika TP skill, race ones or summon party.
Lock-ons work perfectly fine on controller, just like Archer aim.
It's a matter of getting used to it or not. You'll not likely see people switching from one to the other, I can't play on mouse and keyboard, but you certainly play as well as you can on any of those.
The biggest thing to overcome will be the cancer players that just have a thing against controllers (and hence consoles). These should just deal with it and accept that you can be good or bad on either.
Coming from PC tho, the framework is already there (ie: you don't have to think how the game/UI will respond to mouse+kb and put dev effort into it, since that's already done here), it would nice if they just allowed you to choose between the two options on consoles too.
In regards to controller gameplay, I did try it a bit but only on Lancer, Reaper and Archer, can't even imagine how I would do anything useful with Sorc or Priest, too many skills to have handy with the limited controller buttons, that's from my experience tho, I do know some people that plays fine on controller.
That's a fact. Whoever I understand that a console port should be quite focused on the controller experience, as you shouldn't just expect people to get additional hardware for it. Also there's the usage scenario of a console, usually a living room like place without a good desk in front of you to have the keyboard and mouse to play.
To allow both modes is just perfect, but improving the controller experience in the UI should be focused upon in my opinion. Instead of making the analog stick emulate a mouse, use the buttons to interact like locking to the icons and jumping from one to another on a directional key press.
More than controls tho, I'm worried about the game's single thread hogging: both the consoles it's being ported over have quite some power, but low single core performance, even if they have 8 of them (as far as I remember). I can imagine they fixing the CPU single thread hogging finally, and they better port that to PC too!
Since we're porting a game from an x86 platform (as far as I know TERA isn't 64 bit code) to an x86-64 platform as well, I would imagine everything to be quite compatible between releases. Like, again, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate port to PC.
Even if we're mixed, it will be same dying server(s) after few weeks. Unless you expect console players (with controllers and quite often time constrained) to stomach amazing endgame in 1 instance (sometimes 2) with casino frontend on top [of everything]. Along with terrible netcode, ancient engine and suggestive cash shop.
BHS (and respective publishers) would have to change their ways radically to even have a semblance of chance for it to be successful. Like you know - start caring about technical side, stop castrating the game, stop stuffing casino into every possible part of it, start making it about action combat instead of gear. Just to mention the most crucial parts.
Yes, I only played Tera because you can use a controller.
I played tera with keyboard and actually i play with a gamepad and i do confirm firsthand that is totally playable and comfortable with the controller device
Ii even play sorcerer, prolly the class with most skills plus consumables we may use and i use all of them without a problem you can design your own tab and get used to it within minutes. It's not like learning to play guitar now I assure you that you will get used to it very fast even if you are new to such devices.
With gamepad is basically a combination of buttons ps4 or xbox style its not like we play with a NES one that had select start A B
The actual controllers has lotta buttons that you may combine to perfom all skills specialy the ones on top the L1 R1 R R2 gives multiple combinations to suit all skills so dont worry if you never used it , about movement the common thing is left stick movement right stick camera adjusting rotation speed and many stuff to suit u, even if you a re left handed and want the camera with left stick you can switch it too so no one will have any problem ,
You decide wich buttons will activate any skill, consumables emotes etc also ps4 for example comes with touchpad that could do the mouse thing when pc gamepad has no touchpad you can still use Esc then the arrow appears and you use the sticks as mouse so dont panic all will be ok and easy for all the right extra tab where we would often put dont know the noctenium the bravery potions those you may click once every hour or 30 mins whataver are often used via arrow and click so all 100% playable, im not fan of locking spells though but im sure they would optimize that automatic targeting or whataver thats the only CON i could find i lock spells easily specially pve but pvp i feel a lil slower or the brawler bull rush wheneve ri grab moves like a serpent in circles i use the mouse cause cam will move faster and my brawler will rotate much alot faster
Im also hyped to see how all this goes cause tera right now is pc exclusive adding new platforms means we will get tons of new players and a massive playability improvemnt enjoying the graphics at max no lagg no desync, besides most good MMORPGS are jumping to consoles for a good reason, so we can expect very good things from this, that i have no doubt.
