Console and PC players don't have the same tastes on game experience.

Sorry if the tittle is wrong about what i will say here, the lack of knowledge on a language makes hard for ppl to understand what one want to comunicate.

We will have Tera for consoles this year and we are not sure if we will have cross IM with them and if they will be allowed to join the actual servers by now.

I have no doubts that the game is apealing at the start for many new players however Tera lacks Solo content for people who plays on consoles.

I may be mistaken but if EME & BHS don't do something to get many ppl joining and staying in the game we are going to see something similar as Steam.

We will have a great influx of players joining (maybe more even than Steam) but it will dramatically drop becuase many of those players come for the Solo content and multiplayer content is a plus for them and not something to make them play the game at least once a week.

It would be sad to have 40k players joining only to see how 39k would leave after a month or two.

EME & BHS staff, pls, think carefully what are you going to offer to those players before we see the same as Highwatch and the other servers that were killed after 4 months of being avaliable on Steam.

  • I think you are right that TERA has some fundamental issues that need to be resolved if they want to retain players over the long term. (I'm not sure if solo content is really the most needed thing, but I suppose it is part of it. People who play MMOs on consoles aren't necessarily looking for a solo experience any more than PC players are.)

But if I were to guess at the rationale for this console project, I think there can be a few reasons for it:

    1) It opens the game up to additional markets who may not have a PC that can support the game (or support it well), so whatever the weaknesses are, the more potential audience the better.

    2) It's easier to focus optimization efforts around a more narrow range of equipment, and some of the optimizations can then be potentially ported back to the PC version of the game after that.

    3) It's an opportunity to help train a team on how to do console work (and how the publishing/updating process works) in preparation for future potential projects. This could include opening the door for EME to serve as a publisher for other console projects going forward (whether for BHS, or other companies).

    4) It sends a message that development of TERA is not over, as the console audience will need on-going content just as the PC audience does. (But part of this is influenced by whether both PC and console will be on the same servers -- TBD.)

yup razer naga mouse is ready to spank ps and xbox controller B)

and if the priest take too much time to respond or is unable to answer the questions is mean he is a console priest so be ready to spank him ;)

    But console players are great...
Remember when they playing FPS game on console like BF1 or Halo (which I don't know how on Earth they doing it)?
Anyway, 40k players joining and then 39k players left the game after a month or two, ain't that's the truth? We already see this pattern when Reaper, Gunner, Ninja and even Tera on Steam availability. Even right now the community is pretty much like endangered species where our newbies didn't even reach level 30 already quit the game (poor buddy codes).
  • I will enjoy killing console fodder in BG.

oh wait... they basically removing BG, now it makes sense

As I don't have a console I still have no idea how we communicate with them. Of course, IMS is 99.99% without communication and the BGs are standardized sentences ("3-1-3" or "all dps, mama run"). The basic idea of an MMO is to interact with people, communicate and make friends.

Or perhaps exactly this is the selling point. As console players are not used to communicate, they won't have a chat window and will miss all the toxicity and salt or whatever. Sounds good.
  • With respect to communication.
idk about xbox, but ps4 controllers come with that crappy headphone/microphone and a socket on the controller for a mic/headphone.
I believe the PS4 has some capacity for voice recognition in its OS and it's possible that console may be able to use voice recognition.

That's the nightmare of all MMOs. Running a dungeon with a cute Elin until you hear the deep voice of a 50yo male "Oniiiii-chan!" B)
Then it's time to fake a disconnect :3

this is why we need an in game voice mod system as well.
if I develop a crush on some cute looking female character.
I do not want that delusion shattered, not F'ing again!

But seriously, I was talking about voice to text recognition
Looks like it might not be very sophisticated http://www.wikihow.com/Control-the-PlayStation4-with-Voice-Commands
and here as a video of a PS4 game which uses voice recognition (WARNING: CONTAINS F'ING SOCCER)

    Looks a bit crap.

    Maybe a better example exists.

It is possible to play on both PS4 and Xbox One using a regular USB Keyboard/Mouse (incl. wireless), or at least to have a keyboard connected in addition to the controller so that you can chat (no different than if you played with a controller on PC now). TERA actually also has a "quick-reply" feature that was designed for controller where you can pre-program some standard replies. This is completely aside voice chat features, which not all console MMOs use (you could be in a private voice chat with a party you form on the console, but it's not necessarily part of the game itself unless they want it to be).

So anyway, it is certainly possible to make it work reasonably well, at least for 99% of the cases. The thing I'd be most worried about is the UI, though, which isn't terribly controller-friendly at the moment. I assume that is something they will substantially rework.
  • They mentioned (somewhere?) that the user interface was getting a makeover, I think what was said was something like "the current interface is not very couch friendly".

A lot of games (including games originally intended for a mouse and KB) completely disable a M/KB on a console.
I was playing some RTS game (which had been ported from PC) and trying to use a gamepad and thought, this just stupid.
    but no KB/M because F U, that's why.

Has anyone ever played FF14 (only MMO I can think of right now which is cross platform) on console and can say anything about its M/KB functionality?

I have (on both PC and PS4, and my sister played on PS3 before), and yes -- it has full keyboard/mouse support in addition to controller support, and it works identically on PC or console. You can play all keyboard/mouse on console if you want, or you can play all controller on PC if you want, or vice-versa. Even if you go the controller route, though, pretty much everyone still has a keyboard for chat, since there is no built-in voice support. (And when you are in controller mode, hitting keys on the keyboard instantly activates chat mode, so it's quite quick.)

In term of communication for consoles, I guess if they don't have they keyboard, then voice chat is the only way for them.
Although I prefer not to use voice chat myself but given time, it might be necessary to use it sooner or later in most MMO. I mean, look at Arma 3, Cloud Pirates and even simple MOBA like Overwatch or Dota. Voice chat is easiest way and quickest to perform teamwork rather than typing on keyboard. It is however requires dedicated build-in voice chat system in the game itself to works better rather than to use Discord or whatever.

If that rule doesn't exist already, I'm making it right now: Do not ever have a crush on an anonymous avatar. It could be anyone, in worst case Trump, who's sticking you to a nuclear missile and sending you to North Korea. There's never a cute real life Elin behind an Elin character.

I can understand that EME has to fight for customers and attract console players. However, (personal prejudice) console players are more action oriented. It's turn on the box and hop right into action. To me, an MMO is more knowledge orientated. An MMO requires knowledge about rotations, glyphing, combos, whatever. This is usually hard to figure out alone and you need to use other sources, may it be websites, this forum, guild mates or whatever. In my concept of different gamer types, these do not fit together. Well, it's just a theory.

Perhaps console players are set into IMS as "advanced NPC mercenaries" ;)
