There is nothing wrong but there must be a limit at everything.
On the surface, nothing at all.
Thing is, most people in the former group tend to look down on those in the latter group by saying that they're simply not trying hard enough. And the people in the latter group often complain about how things should be easier to give everyone better footing, which then spurs on the former group, so on and so on.
And the real crux of the matter is, as ElinUsagi said, without checks and balances the problem only gets worse over time. It's not even necessarily about "casual" vs. "hardcore" but also about newly-arriving players. One of the key questions new players need to know is whether it's possible to get on the level of veteran players, and a system like this without limits makes it impossible -- the veteran players will always have an advantage and you can never catch up no matter how much you try due simply to elapsed time.
Experience for it can always be adjusted, even if it's one of the permanent events that multiplied gains by an absurd amount.
