Horrendous (unplayable) FPS on a high end system.

I just recently built a new pc, with the hopes of getting above 30-40 fps in tera, but on a fresh install (no mods or any .ini file tweaks), on LOWEST settings i'm getting single-digit frames. Any suggestions? Drivers and such are all up to date as well..

Specs

i7 7700K @4.2 ghz
EVGA SC 1070 8GB
16G DDR4 Gskill RAM, running @ 3000
Tera's installed on a 256 gb crucial MX300 SSD

  • I have a similar setup and have no problems with my fps. The only way I could see getting that low of an fps would be if you were running it on the integrated graphics of your CPU instead of your GPU, so I'd recommend you check that first.
  • It shouldnt be, since the monitor is plugged into the gpu, and having a gpu plugged into the pci slot generally disables the integrated gpu.

Any surefire way to check that?
  • just confirmed that it is running off my gpu and not the integrated.
  • Well, there goes the easiest solution to the problem. Is it only Tera that is running badly, or are other games also running badly on your system?
  • Only tera. I can run a maxed out DXMD and get 60fps.
  • open nvidia control panel go to manage 3d settings, program settings, and find tera
then copy these. these are my own but they get me good fps :3

you can find tweaks in s1engine file elsewhere, such as bernkastels guide.
    i used this

  • slightly better, im getting approx 20 fps now, but that is still way below what I know my system can put out.

At least now i can actually adjust in game settings if i wanted to, trying to do that on 5 fps was an excercise in patience xd
  • update all your drivers, not just gpu. sounds to me like it could be your graphics drivers or something
  • all my drivers are up to date.

Its probably Teras fantastic UI, if you are in game press ctrl+z...same thing happened to me, not long ago i build myslef a new pc and got this problem which forced me to stop playing Tera.

This is weird because I have like half your specs and have similar results. I could even hit 60 fps on a laptop processor at points where there is no player bottleneck (my only problem on my system is that my laptop processor overheats too fast even with proper thermal paste and ventilation, with that meaning I can't play most modern games until I get a new system.

    Try the following:

-Install and update DirectX 9. Most systems nowadays have DirectX 12 but that is not supported by Tera. New PCs don't have older DirectX versions.

-Increase the amount of Flash cache. This is very important if you realise that your gameplay is extremely smooth after you Ctrl+Z. This means that flash UI is the bottleneck.

If those two can't help it could probably be a configuration issue that affects other games too (with that setting you should get above 60fps in many games on high anyway)
  • I play on laptop. And it's not even a gaming one. Before tweaking ini file I had around 14-20fps in open world, 6fps in crowded area and dungeons. Which made playing something more than Channelworks really difficult.

I have tweaked ini like a week ago or something.

Now I have 60-90fps in less crowded area and around 40-50fps in dungeons.

Game runs on high :) So if you'd like the ini file, PM me, I can send you mine ^w^ If your device is better, you'll probably get even more fps.
  • Flash is bottlenecking it a bit, we're up into the 20's for fps now with flash cache increased.

I can't seem to install DX9 though, it keeps throwing out the "newer version is installed already" and it won't install.
  • got it. After another clean install, more ini file tweaks, unlocking the rest of my cpu's, and various other junk i'm up to over 100fps. Thanks for the help guys.
  • @ OP not sure if this helps but have you tried disabling the hyperthreading feature of your CPU? I've heard TERA doesn't like it. Also I assumed you've already unparked you CPU. In the Nvidia control panel make sure vsync is completely turned off. In game video settings turn off shadows as well.
