As of now, the only update we ever got about the upcoming console versions of TERA was in this post. However, about two streams ago Spacecats mentioned that Wonderholme was to test their console on the server, and that the En Masse team appreciated all the PC players who came to this server to help with the 'test'. After that, there was nothing else said about consoles and he closed Wonderholme. However, to my perspective, I feel that this was a hint to the TERA servers being cross-platforming and might also hint at 2 of these two ideas I've made:

    1. TERA Console and PC players can play together on any current server, similar to FFXIV.
    2. TERA Console and PC players can play on a dedicated console server.

Now, I'm not 100% sure because I have nothing else to back my statements with other from what Spacecats mentioned in that Twitch stream. The only thing we can do is wait for new updates on what the gameplay would be like and when the beta testing starts. You could get a chance for a head start and sign up for the console beta testing here. Best of luck to you, my friend.

even if they made a dedicated server for pc and console players to share, as long as I can still use my account bound stuff in there, im good.

From the Wonderholme steam at 25:45, Someone asked this...and spacecats said "We're looking into ways for people on different consoles to play with each other but its seemingly increasingly difficult. Im not sure there are many games where both Xbox and PS4 players can play together" (You can watch the stream here https://www.twitch.tv/videos/129361937?t=25m45s to hear his direct quote)

To me, personally, basically kills the idea of being cross play between the consoles. In my knowledge/experience, other games have their own seperate servers due to various reasons. The one im personally more familar with is FFXIV, It came out only on PS4 because, at the time, MS wanted their own server while SE wanted everyone to play together...and to this day, its still not out due to Xbox live requiring you to pay in order to use the Online servers and SE gets none of the money....so people with Xbox wanting to play FFXIV would have to pay the FFXIV sub AND XBL sub....Abit farfetched/much isn't it?
In my opinion the biggest hurdle with bringing cross platform console MMOs/Games is the XBL cost....think about it like this....Tera comes out...you have a Xbox...you really want to play it...so you're paying the Xbox live cost in order to play a free game when you have the option to play it on PC which is basically free (Ok you're paying for the internet itself but thats a given/no-one ever talks about it).
    So what do you do?
Either A) Give Xbox people a small bonus/Elite (I believe Warframe does something like this? Can't recall, someone confirm this for me) and let them play with PS4/PC people. This would mean they could be at a advantage vs PS4/PC players cause they're Elite on day 1 and will be elite forever (Though i don't see why they would do this since the Money goes to MS and not EME....Im not a Xbox expert so don't take my words for granted). They could do this for PS4 Gold members as well but same thing, Sony gets the money, EME doesn't (I think anyway)
or B)Everyone gets their own server and No-one gets anything special...most likely resulting in Console servers dying off eventually during mid/end of patch time
or C) Do what FFXIV does and let PS4 players play with PC and basically say "Xbox, you get our own special corner" and have Xbox seperated....Again, Would boost our current servers but the Xbox server will die
or D) As NPCpeak said, they could do their own Deciated Console/PC server....then it brings up the question again of "What are you gonna do about the Xbox (and PS4 gold probably) people who are paying money to play our free game"

So TL;DR (AT THIS CURRENT POINT IN TIME WITH ONLY THE STREAM ANY FURTHER POINT OF INFO ON TERA CONSOLE) i dont see Cross platform happening, as much as i would like it (and find it funny to just welcome all the Console people onto the GLORIOUS AND THE COMPLETELY (not) PURE LAND OF CELESTIAL HILLS....i just don't see it

Guess we gotta wait until Summer (probably) for more info :pleased:
  • Could someone teach me about the technical difficulties for cross platform?
The game has to be optimized for all platforms? Why we can use texting/chatting software cross-played but turned much harder when it comes to games?

The problem isn't so much of cross platform, as shown with multiple games having easy ports of single player games. Assuming Wonderholme is the test of their own console port, I would say they have succeeded at some point.

The problem is actually on the console makers themselves. If anything @Vinyltails said the point really clear: it is mostly the problem of their online subscription service giving the big bulk of problems. Not everyone pays for Xbox Live Gold (I used to own a XBox 360 and I felt like Xbox Live Gold by itself is a scam. Unless EME holds full ownership of the server (not any console maker), there won't be a cross-platform server.

I will put my eyes on another game that is coming out, also trying for Cross platform for Xbox Live and PS4: Gwent. Although Gwent is confirmed to enter Windows stores as a UWP (Universal Windows Platform) due to the PC x Xbox One merger, I would say that if Gwent is successful in getting their cross-play to PS4, Tera will and should be able to do the same thing.

Incidentally, Microsoft loosened up their policies about this last year, and it is now possible to do cross-play without an Xbox Live subscription, nor having to use their servers. The insinuation has been that maybe now it's Sony that doesn't want cross-play with Xbox (though with PC has always been fine)... but the limitations from Microsoft appear to be gone now.

It still may be a bunch of licensing complexity to work out, but probably the biggest issue is that this requires all patches to be in perfect sync with each other, at feature parity, and released day-and-date on all Platforms. This increases the amount of QA significantly and could cause delays across the board. So it's easier logistically to let each device be on its own parallel path. Of course, that doesn't have the advantage of adding players to a common player pool and increasing the population universally.

    Anyway, time will tell.
