Why is my pc running the game like trash

edited April 2017 in Off-Topic
I used to be playing the game with an old office pc:
i3 processor @ 2.8 ghz duo core
6gb ddr3 1600mhz ram
1gb gpu

had steady frames and was very playable.

Now I have:
i5 6600k OC'd to 4.3 ghz (quad core)
32gb ddr4 3000mhz ram
3gb Nvidia GTX 780

single digit FPS and very unplayable.

I've played the game since OBT and returning recently, but this makes me want feel very turned off to returning.
-
I've twinkled with the Nvidia settings as some posts suggested.
I've did INI stuff as other posts suggested.
I've disabled windows defender + fixed flash cache as other posts suggested.
Doing these tweaks did absolutely no changes to my FPS.

feedback and help direly needed.

A little late but, have you tried keeping your cpu at stock settings to see if it improves? A poor OC can cause problems. Also, does your gpu get high temps when the game is running? Some stuttering problems are normally caused by hardware configurations, particularly the gpu. The reason I don't know, but I have been able to confirm some gpus simply stutter frequently on Tera, some only have issues at certain dungeons, and others simply no issues anywhere. If the GPU is the main cause, tweaking generally won't improve anything, normally the tweaks are if your cpu is a little on the low end, which is why it didn't get you much of anything as you have an overclocked 6600k.

Do it have an onboard gpu?
  • That is what i'd do sorry if you already done this, first id focus on finding what is causing this and to do so you gotta test things.
click Alt +ctrl +spr while tera is running and go to task manager the last option you'll see perfectly your net, memory, disk and the cpu used
Make sure disk is not at 100% eaten by windows updates antiviruses or any otehr sort of programs if so click on those programs and hit finish task, On that simple tasks window vasically you can monitor everything that is running and what they consume so its a good place and simple to start with to check where the problems may be,
If all seems fine id point to your windows version and donwload the newest direct x if its windows 10 should be incorporated but i'd check anway trying to install the newest again, also at control panel id try to fix/iupdate /install video card drivers again to check if there¡s updates or all is working fine you said you did some tweaks at the card i bet you were desperate If it didn't solve anything id set it back to default
Another thing I'd try is this:
In the char selection screen click the options at bottom right corner icon(or ingame key o) go Video set all values to 0 no shadows no effects no nothing set pc limit to 20 chars displayed only or even 10 to test then set screen to standart 3;4 resol 1280x960 and windowed after that go Sound and disable any sound effect and test hit apply and check if all that changes anything( you can set all your values back easily like u used to play whenever the problem is found and solved)
A good sound card might add a few fps because you are offloading the CPU but since i dont know the issue just disable sounds ingame to test if it solves anything
An that's my last bet and probably the correct one I'd say some device plugged is causing the FPS drop
so if fps are too low still unplug whataver u have in usb ports one by one starting with the mouse and go checking results then keyboard etc
I'd also go to windows seach files in your pc and type tjhis ---> dxdiag you'll see the exe and double click to execute it its a simple diagnose tool to check several stuff that could be malfunctioning such as screen, devices etc go checking and tell us if u find anything
good luck and dont give up cause if it happens here in tera u may get same issues on other similar games
  • GTX 780 is pretty old school, might look at upgrading that sometime if you're into gaming, expensive part tho I know. One thing I noticed was when I moved TERA from a hard drive to a solid state drive, it improved performance a lot. Maybe your hard drive is dying or super fragmented or something.

Hey guys sorry for my late response to this as well. I did resolve the concern and found out it was the recent win10 update. I went back to win7 and it runs max graphics at ease.
  • i5 4690k 3.5ghz 4 core
    RX480 8gb
    500gb SSD
    BenQ XL2411Z 144Hz 1ms 24 inch Gaming Monitor

On preset 4 sitting in a crowded area on TR my FPS is around 70. Away from people it's around 130. The SSD is amazing.

    ????

Hue man the 780 is not close to being a problem, unless it's faulty and dying! Really, he's getting worse performance than my 550 Ti, THAT'S old school, 2011 hardware doing better? Nah not the hardware's issue at all. In fact brute power wise he should be going way better than me.
The SSD issue: I've had the same FPS but way longer loading screens and pegasus warp tunnels with the HDD than my SSD, yes, but FPS was same.

Even tho OP probably fixed it by now, I would bet on a controller memory leak, it locks you with one core only overloaded. Check the task manager to see if there's some huge memory usage with TERA, it shouldn't go much above 2GB, mine never went past 1.7GB usage at all. Also check if it has only one core at max usage, that's typical of memory leak issues.

Do preset 6 in 1080p in a dungeon.
  • tera is very badly optimized to begin with(not everybody owns a $5000 computer don't know what bhs was thinking). even high end gaming pcs have trouble with this game. either you're going to have to settle for preset 2-3 and have decent fps, or you sacrifice fps to look somewhat better. the ssd would be a good upgrade to help a little. i have fx-6300 16gb ddr3 ram and a r7 370 4gb with an hdd and i'm on preset 2 pushing about 40-50 fps and about 20fps in populated areas or in some dungeons. i settled for a little higher fps, because preset 2 isn't all that bad looking. if you have money, change your graphics card and cpu to something newer. basically the only advice i can give, is either settle on graphics, fps, or upgrade if you can
