Why is the leveling such a joke now? (Returning player)

Hey.

Me and a friend started leveling last night on brand new characters. We are relics of the past, we each had two 60 characters back around the launch era of the game, but we wanted to start fresh with different classes.

And...WOW.

We picked up some stray buddy codes, activated elite status...and we went from 1-35 or so in like an hour. At this pace I'd say we'd be 65 within a day? We get to the point where we can't even do a full rotation on everything we're killing. It feels so mindless.

The old leveling felt like a real journey, very reminiscent of vanilla WoW, where your patience was tested, and you had so much time to become familiar with your class, BAM quests were ferocious and necessitated parties, you actually needed tanks in your dungeons (and heals for that matter).

I get the idea that "the game starts at 65", but is that any reason for the leveling experience to be so trivial? It's literally more trivial than WoW's leveling which is sad because at least in WoW they did it because all the extra ground you need to cover due to level cap extensions. Here in TERA it feels pretty unnecessarily fast, and over-the-top.

It was to the point where we felt extremely disconnected to the game compared to in the past, like "is this what it's like now?". Like we lost a little bit of motivation to keep playing.

In any case I think we'll try to just bear with it and power through to 65 to see if there's credence to the idea that the game has simply decided to only focus on lvl 65 tuning/content. I really hope so. Is there any reason to utterly abandon the pacing of the leveling experience, though?

Elite is an extra 100%, buddyup is another extra 100%, so you're levelling 3 times as fast as you would without those.

And yeah, many people think the levelling up has become too easy, with not enough to make you explore the world (you'll notice all the yellow, non-essential, quests are hidden by default), while plenty others like the new pace because they get to max level (what they see as the main dish) that much faster.

Because it is a game that's:

    5 years old
    Free2play model
    Top heavy population
    With patch based gear progression

If it's difficult to get to the end, new players are less likely to stick around and do things like spend money on elite to grind, or buy EMP or costumes to sell to avoid grind.

If you want to make it harder just duo with your friend and don't use avatar weapons. Grind on dungeons only, not easy vanguards. Unless you are both using OP classes it should be hard to stay alive.

I know what you mean. I remember years ago trying to level my archer back when 60 was cap, and it seemed like forever, finally a guildmate took me to sp the peak place that got removed and finished leveling me up there. I deleted many of my characters except for that archer and after 65 patch leveld up quite a few 65s solo.last week when we had triple exp, I leveled up 6 characters from level 1 to 60 in 2 days solo and no bgs and no dungeons. im not even classified as a good player and severly handicapped. so yeah, if I can do it, you know its easy lol

Leveling shouldn't be hard at all, especially in an endgame focused game. Also most classes don't get key skills until later on in leveling so the whole it helps your learn you class thing is totally subjective.

This always happens with MMOS, like with WoW. I wasn't around when WoW opened, but I since then have tried Vanilla, and I think of when I did sub for WoW, and I'm like wow(No pun intended), the pace is so much faster now.

So it's not uncommon for MMOs to pick up the leveling pace after some years.

im not complaining lol, i actually enjoy not spending hours upon hours leveling up to cap. im glad they did this. i was just saying that it is very easy now compared to before. i was actually hoping they would keep triple exp going for a bit longer. i used a 100% boost with it to make it quad when i leveled my 6 characters...it was sooo nice.
  • during the new class we had enough dyeing an pain an suffering due to the lack of healers/tanks. they gave the cry baby's there no solo hard bosses that eat gold from dead , now you want to slow the xp gravy train down too ??? go play aion an grind your butt off for 7 years just to get to maxed level . tera is fine just the way it is . life starts at maxed level an you grind for gears . if you want to feel like your doing something try doing the quest line story an try to get groups that will do kelsak/ argon queen /bolders. to name a few now that the dungens are no longer soloable the story line is broken due to the changes

Why are people so focused on TERA leveling time? It hasn't been a slog for nearly 4 years. 4! And even at its worst it still wasn't that bad once you knew where to go and for how long to grind. And there were grind guides a plenty from kr players, so you only had to figure stuff out for yourself if you wanted to. Instead of bams and mobbing, you just dungeon spam and do vanguard. Neither are very difficult or engaging once you learn attack patterns of the mob.

Enjoy the casual sprint to 65 and you'll be back to trapping people in ims in no time flat. And no, leveling never did teach you how to play. Endgame knowledge has always been, and will always be about encounter specific knowledge.

I feel you man. I am also an old school Tera player from 2012 and recently returned a couple of months ago after being away for a year or more. I loved the old style of leveling where you had more time to run through dungeons though I don't miss those annoying leveling walls in the 40's and 50's. Now it is more end game so they speed you through most of the content. The avatar weapons make it cake also since back in the day you had to actually dungeon hunt for weapons but it just goes with the plan they have to speed level you to end game. The game changes and so must the players or else we had better find another game that caters to what we specifically enjoy. I just adapted and still enjoy Tera though I still daydream about old school Tera from time to time.

That's what happens with Elite and BuddyUp XP bonuses. :expressionless:

Leveling is a "joke" because this game wasn't released yesterday, old players know how to level efficiently and at this point they couldn't care less about the leveling experience because this isnt a new shinny game with clueless players to play with anymore, everyone already knows the dungeons and the enemies mechanics and all the regions. Then there's the few new players, but those dont know how to level the fastest way, they will probably do all of those yellow quests and not even care about ims because it takes a long time for queue to pop, they will also not even know about kumas being available at lvl 20, and if they see maybe they wont even queue.

Leveling is working fine, new players still take a good time at it, and old players just breeze trough it, there's a reason there's even a lvl 60 scroll, leveling is only fun when you are new, and its like that in every game.

You forgot to add that new players spam more basic attacks than skills, that is one of the many reasons why a new player strugle when lvling, heck they even struggle with the monsters on realworld because many of them don't have elite and don't use buddy up codes, also they waste their pots in a silly way and when they get to fight vs bosses they can't survive.

I lvled 3 toons in the last month and I can tell you for sure that lvl is easier than before but is not as easy for a new player than a veteran player.

I don't miss a week of quests to max out.

There are two sides of one coin.

People that wishes it to be harder and people that wishes it to be easy. One side won because people wants to focus on the end game.

I miss the old challenges too but I wouldn't have all classes maxed if it was like when I got my zerk and priest to lvl 60.

Remember when bams were group quests? XD
  • What is the fun on leveling?? Yesterday was fun if like the OW pvp, but that is gone. It just a straight dung all day, and stupid kumas.
I started a new warrior yesterday, without buddy code and elite. just with 100%xp boost when won a Kumas at 20. Now im 45.
I wish i could hit 65 right now.

Lucky for me, warrior can qeue as tank and the queue times are not very long. But if im a Dps oh my god, like 30 minutes queue times for everything. Questing was always boring so that is not an option.

Oh god how i miss low level Corsair Stronghold. That was a funny way to level up. And make good credits in the mid time for gearing after.
