Is my CPU running too hot?

edited July 2017 in Off-Topic
I currently own a laptop
Intel i5-7200U 2.5GHz
graphics card Nvidia GeForce 940MX 2gb

So when I play tera, the CPU temperature reaches around mid 70's and can go up to low 80's for a short duration but usually sits are 75-76 celsius and i was wondering if it's safe to play at that temperature.

While for a laptop that's not the best temperature, as long as your game is not throttling, your laptop melting or restarting- It's something it can obviously still handle. If you're worried but still don't want to stop playing or take breaks, you can try to reduce Tera's process importance lower in the Task Manager and see if game is still playable after that, or just generally lower settings.
  • 75-76 C is fine. Its when you start hitting the upper 80's and are constantly running at those temps for long periods of time that you should start to worry. Depending on how long you've had the laptop, it might need to be opened and the built up dust/debris cleaned out. I would also invest in a laptop cooling pad.

You are running on a 7th gen intel processor, which actually shouldn't THAT huge of a heat spike. Even if it is TERA it shouldn't be at the same temperature as my 4 year old laptop running Tera with dust built up.

You want to try and check if airflow is an issue. Invest in laptop coolers, not too sure if vaccuum ones will do well, but at least the normal laptop stands. If you bought an ultrathin laptop, note that heat WILL be an issue in demanding applications, so cooling is a must-have.

Around 75 for a laptop isn't really abnormal even for a recent generation, especially considering each generation for Intel cpus didn't have much of a focus on temperature when under load, it was mostly power efficiency and consumption when idle or performing tasks that didn't demand much. Any reduction in heat for these cpus would be due to lower power use, but that's somewhat offset by the thinness anyways.

As long as the temps aren't getting close to the maximum rated temp it should be fine, just be sure the laptop is getting proper air flow (don't block the vents) when it is being used.
  • Alright! Thanks for the replies!
  • That's hot!
  • Depends on your machine. I have a laptop that's built for gaming and is meant to be able to sustain high heats for prolonged periods of time. My temps can be at about 90c and remain that way for days on end with no negative drawback.
