Improving Tera

  • This game does have a hell of a lot more potential than is being realized right now. But, I don't think biggest barrier to broader NA acceptance are the details people are mentioning. I think it's because En Masse literally can't get the changes done that it wants done. Take a look at the server transfer issue. That's a simple database copy that a high-school intern coder should be able to write, test, and release in a day. It's the kind of development problem I would assign to a new hire and if they didn't do a stellar job in less than a week, I'd let them go. It's a perfect trial effort: small, simple, easy to verify success.

Yet, it's been languishing away for weeks. BHS either can't or won't spend the time to get it done and either interpretation is troubling. I strongly suspect there are a lot of other changes En Masse would like, too -- many of them on the suggestion list above. If EnMasse publicly endorses any idea before getting BHS buy-in, they just made their own life into a minor hell, too, which is likely why players aren't getting more feedback on their nice ideas.

Here's my suggestion for En Masse: own it. Get source code rights. Make it a fork on the main Ktera base, but give yourself the freedom to both import/update and/or make the changes you need for your region. Find an NA studio to handle your changes on your schedule or if you want into the development game yourself, there's a lot of talent in the tera 3rd party realm you could recruit from; 6-12 months from now you could do a re-release of "Terana" as an expansion offering all those things that your marketing has been telling you people will pay to play.

IMHO, don't offer Ktera reciprocal rights in return unless they insist. Hold that out for after your version shows more success than theirs.
  • Well said. I'm new to Tera but I can already see some of these things you mentioned as issues that could be fixed. <3<3
