Brawler or Lancer?

Which one is a better tank?

Lancer is debuffs the boss more (12%) and provides massive party DPS buffs like Guardian Shout and Adrenaline Rush. They do about 70% of a Brawler's DPS. They're faster paced and revolve around using Spring Attack (high dps skill) and Shield Counter (highest dps skill) as much as possible.

Brawler has standard tank debuff of 8% and has autoblock on all skills. They're slower paced and are basically all about using skills to keep up Growing Fury (gives damage and autoblock) and timing skills to get the best out of Perfect Blocks.

Lancer is a MUCH better tank.

Lancer and Brawler are like Mystic and Priest comparisons: While mystic is desired for more advanced players, Priests are generally better and easier to use.

Brawler can dish an insane amount of damage, can block everything with each skill, and still draw aggro from dps. Its easier to learn and use than a Lancer, and as an extra DPS, it can make dungeon runs go faster.

Lancer however, with the changes it got, is more of a buffer tank. It is more complex to play and learn than Brawlers, most of his skills are depend on low ping, which is a turn down for most players, but at end game, its party buffs and debuffs for enemies make up for the lack of damage compared to brawlers.

Your choice in the end. You want something easy that will yield satisfying results? Go Brawler. You want something more advanced that will provide support to your entire party or raid? Go Lancer. Both are good tanks, but depends on the player whos using them.

As an added bonus, Lancer since its the original tank, can be of any race and gender, unlike Brawler whos limited to just human female, soon to open to Human male.
  • if ping < 50-60 then lancer
    if higher then brawler
    lancer dps sucks
  • If it's your first character or first time in certain dungeon, brawler is a better choice. For really good dps you need perfect blocks and utilizing RMB buff correctly which require practice, but for starters you can just mash random skills off cd and fully focus on boss mechanics. Both classes are tricky to master but brawler basics (hold aggro and don't get hit) are waaay easier.

Yeah if your ping's low, go lancer. They're a very ping dependent class.
Played properly, a lancer's DPS can be incredible. I'm not going to say that an equally skilled/geared brawler wouldn't do more, because of course that's the point of the brawler class: DPS in exchange for party buffs. But lancer is capable of pulling off some sick DPS nonetheless if it's played by someone capable. The possibility is there, and if you master that then your party can have the best of both worlds: a tank that does enough dps to help push the boss into its enrage phases quickly, AND the party buffs to keep the group strong during burn phases.

I'd only suggest playing a brawler if your ping is mega high and you still really want to tank.

  • Yea, if u have high ping or play a lot with random DPS you go Brawler. Worst case you carry yourself.

If you have reliable DPS friends you play with, you go Lancer and buff them.

I main Brawl but I agree what @voidy said. Usually your brawler does easily more dmg than the equally geared lancer.
But Ive seen some Lancers make me sweat with how hard they hit and keep up with their maxed out DPS mates.
Possibility is there, but obviously takes the skills and ping to pull that off.

With my EU ping, Brawler is the way to go for me. Also I hate the RE system. No RE ? Cant block or dodge ...
With Brawl all you need is your everful nostrum and u block forever.

Depends, do you prefer automatic or manual?

I'm gonna try to be unbiased here, but, I promise nothing.

Brawlers are your automatics, you can roll threw fights with auto block if you know how to maintain fury. They dump out huge damage rather easily, pretty cut and dry.

Lancers are manual, you have to time just about e v e r y thing you do and memorize even basic attack patterns on every boss to avoid turtleing or eating too many hits. Lancer damage is a joke, but, if you time out buffs right you can cut fight times down greatly. Lancer buffs are an insane boost, but you also need your party to be on their A game to see it's full benefit. If a DPS does not notice they are up, they can't take full advantage.

I'd say pick a tank class based on your own reaction times. If you have hair finger response and strong muscle memory, and don't mind hitting like a wet kitten with the AIDS, lancer is for you.

Aggro wise, the winner is lancer, no contest. Even a VM set down, or mid teir VS DW, a lancer will maintain aggro over a brawler. I am basing this on my own experiences however from double tank runs, and on DPS, I'll rip off a brawler before I even get a sniff of a lancers aggro.

I think it's well balanced with lancer as the harder to play but superior tank, and brawlers as the damage dumping easy to play tank.
When brawler was released I found myself totally obsolete as a lancer, it was sad times. We could not out aggro them, or do 1/4th of their damage, the only thing we seemed to have over them was less greed and a knack for offering the DPS the bosses booty (which seems to still be a issue with brawlers, POSITIONING IS STILL A THING PEOPLE).

    As for lancers and DPS.
You're DPS will be higher the faster the boss dies thanks to that first round of L'buffs, any fight over 3min long will not yield well for your lancers final numbers. Getting those two rounds of buffs on in sync with enrage is how lancers have recorded fights where they do over 1 million each second, or, they use a block macro, aka, cheat. I like to think a good % of my parties damage actually belongs to me thanks to L'baffs, makes me feel better about hitting the boss with a boiled noodle.

*smacks you with a newspaper* Silly lancer, you're support, get these delusions of doing your own damage out of your head.
