Chat Restriction Changes

It is fairly well-known that the NA (EnMasse) version of TERA is home to a lot of EU players who have migrated over from the EU (GameForge) version of the game. Being an EU player myself, It's always exciting to find out someone in your group is from the same country and/or speaks the same native language as you, when the topic of ''where everyone is from'' gets brought up.

Sadly, there are chat restrictions in place that prevent any message from being sent if it contains foreign letters (these restrictions don't exist in EU TERA). This completely breaks certain languages and makes them very frustrating both to write in and read, as you have to replace certain letters with letters that most closely resemble the ones you are trying to use.

Here are a few sentences in some Nordic languages as an example:

Swedish: Gå rakt fram, sväng sedan till Höger. = Ga rakt fram, svang sedan till Hoger.
Finnish: Väinö, aja liikenneympyrässä toista ulosajotietä. = Vaino, aja liikenneympyrassa toista ulosajotieta.
Norwegian: Han fikk ikke førstehjelp. Det er svært kritikkverdig. = Han fikk ikke forstehjelp. Det er svaert kritikkverdig.

This is a small QoL change that would mean a lot to a large amount of people. My proposition for you is to lift these restrictions for:
- General Chat (/s)
- Private Whispers (/w)
- Party Chat (/p)
- Guild Chat (/g)

I feel it does make sense for other channels such as Global, Trade, Alliance etc. to remain strictly English, though it would be entirely at your discretion what to do with those.

Would love to get some input from other people <3

  • I know this might off as rude or harsh but... this isn't tera eu. Of course these will be in place this is an English game based solely in the US.

That being said, i would have no problem with them fixing the foreign languages for other non-english players to use.

I agree with this. Yes, this is NA tera, but this isn't English-Only-MURRICA-Tera. Many people speak more than one language, even if they do reside in North America.

I understand why things are the way that they are, but I also feel that it wouldn't affect me negatively at all to have this changed.

I am still learning English from teamspeak.

As someone from Finland I still have to say no to this, I feel like it would just encourage people to not use english even less than they already... don't. And quite frankly, I do wish it was english only... in fact one more reason why I don't use EU server.

Yeah it's annoying that when I write (ä ö ü ß - [German]), my text will be deleted and I can't get it back so I have to retype it
  • As a person residing in the US and only able to speak English, I don't really mind at all as long as it isn't in global (though in dungeons & PvP communication would be further loss). There are a lot of people in the US that speak many languages sure, but NA Tera was meant to be English only. We already have too much Portuguese in global at times, I would hate to see even more languages filling the chat in which I'm supposed to be able to understand. I'm not trying to be an [filtered], it's just I expect to see English playing on an English game (well, it's Korean but you know what I mean.)

If I, who can only speak English was playing on a game that's meant for only your native language, and typing or even spamming in chat with other people who only speak English while taking over the chat.. well, you get my point lol.

Well it would be great if those letter were allowed in private chat and group.
It's just annoying that when you write .. dunno "Bärbel fürchtete sich vor großem Ärger" (dont even ask what that means), the text will be deleted, completly, and you have to retype the whole thing ..

Fact that i have to make my texts harder to read, or completely changing my entire sentences just so i can chat with fellow norwegians in whispers is just idiotic.

There are no goldsellers spamming global or say chat anymore, game is dead enough for them to not care. Atleast give us 3 more letters
  • VyolVyol ✭✭✭
Well we'd need the norwegian alphabet, swedish, dansk, german .. I don't know who else has weird letters ... xD

The language barrier is quite a sensitive topic as it is. The consequences of it can be so frustrating to players here that people commonly become belligerent. Most obvious in Corsair's.

I personally wouldn't encourage the use of non-English any further, really. I wouldn't mind it if these changes applied to guild, party, and whisper, but the issue also lies in consistency.

But I think it's a very good suggestion to consider, nonetheless.
