It's that time of week again! Savvis sucks :D

I don't really need to comment on this. 17% packet loss as soon as I hit a savvis node. There's nothing I can do about it and support ticket tells me to post on forum :D

Let's cut to the chase here , its your provider :p haven't you learnt from all the others to say this :p
  • I feel like your post needs some more sarcasm tags. Does anyone know what the migration tomorrow is about?

While he is repetitive about it, he's not wrong. Apparently you feel the need to comment on these threads with uninformed responses. I get screwed by Savvis, as do many of the people I run with, all with a variety of providers. I'm glad you're fine and dandy, but many (read, not everyone, but a good amount) players are not due to choice in routing services.
We can only hope the upcoming maintenance alleviates some of the issues.
  • Isn't the problem in the screenshot the Cogent -> Qwest bridge in Chicago run by Cogent? That seems to be the point where the packet loss starts, and continues to the Qwest nodes (10+) in Chicago into the datacenter. Qwest is owned by CenturyLink (like Savvis), but Cogent is not. (They have a peering arrangement, of course.)

cogent and savvis both claim the problem node is the other company's problem, it really doesn't matter whose fault it is considering neither of them are going to fix it. tera was doing load balancing for awhile and that worked great, but was removed with no information at all, so i keep sending in tickets and making these pointless threads hoping eventually someone will say something about it.

I didn't say he was wrong nor am i uninfomed as i have read his prier posts , and if you couldn't read the sarcasm in my post i really don't care at least the op saw it as it seem to be posted on most his threads on this as i mentioned
Hopefully this migration leads to this being fixed

It's not impossible, but given the split schedule this seems more like in-data-center equipment migration. I suppose it's possible that they'd move all the physical hardware all during the second window (including some old equipment)... but seems more like that's just when they're upgrading/swapping the servers in batches at the same facility.
  • It's also the local comcast->savvis connection here, too. Savvis is definitely a bottom feeder when it comes to ISPs. My ping to Chicago when staying entirely on comcast is ~30ms. As soon as it hits Savvis, it jumps up by 30~40ms (60~70ms total) with a great deal of latency spikes and packet drops. It does matter where you inject into the Savvis network, though. I tried several spots with a tunneling service and the further I go before hitting Savvis the better.

BTW, would you pick an ISP where a past CEO was punted for running up a $250,000 bill at a NY strip club on the company credit card? That's Savvis -- party on dudes!
  • You're implying savvis is the only ISP that does this, but it's sadly fairly commonplace to force port congestion on peering nodes in order to extort money out of other providers, as even if the plan fails they still save money by passing less data. The problem isn't just savvis, the problem is that there's only one option for routing to tera.
