Is TERA worth starting in nov.2017 ?
Hey,
I used to play TERA EU on beta and live, until Gameforge got it. (You may know -or not - Gameforge things)
Before I stopped years ago, I think it's safe to say it was around 2013; people were saying that TERA EnMasse was really much better than Gameforge's in EU. Less "forced" cash shop, more skins, more stability, better player database.
I work as a network administrator (also called Sysadmin) but for personal matters, I'm off to work for a couple weeks/months. I've lost interest in most MMORPGs but still am a big fan of TERA in my heart. I was wondering if it was safe and saint to start a new TERA adventure on your servers. (Also if yes, please let me know which servers are best to start with).
TERA has been out for a long time now. Is the community still around and holding up?
Ok so you obviously may play TERA right now but, the actual question is, if you were in my shoes and have to start a 100% fresh adventure in TERA, new server, new character, no friend (I call it the global package), would you take the chance ?
Excuse my english btw I'm not a native speaker and even tho french is harder to learn than english, it's still easier to speak french for me.

But yeah, I would say Tera's community is doing okay so far, we just recently got a new patch in October that revamped the whole gearing progression thing. It should be somewhat-ok for you to start gearing up a character. Try finding a guild in whichever server you choose, there should be plenty that is willing to help new players. There's still plenty of veterans that play this game too.
Tera's a good game. It has the best action-combat out of any mmo in my opinion. Theres people on forums that complain a lot about the state of the game, but thats just because we like it a lot and want to see improvements in the game. So yeah, I would "take the chance".
Edit: Oh yeah, as for servers. I have characters on MT, TR, and CH and I would say MT probably has the highest population, but is the least newbie-friendly and is a pvp server. Try TR or CH, think AV is good too.
To be able to upgrade your gear to the max level you HAD TO cash shop the chests which could drop with luck the so desired powders.
At first there was an option in the game to have it free (without cash-shopping) but this had been removed in Europe.
PVP was dominated by just a few class. For sure the game combat mode was exciting but consider that playing with full lags and teleporting/rolling back players, without mention of the complete unbalanced stuff and economy broke when they introduced free server migrations.
Oh for sure I could take the time to download the 77GB (is that really 77 GB tho? the official site says so but it looks like 2 times heavier than any big MMO). I could take the time to level up a new char and stuff it (I recall the progression was the easiest I've found in mmorpgs, even tho I played a mystic, the only class at this time which summon an offensive pet that couldnt kill barely anything on the map.
I probably could take a few days if not weeks to test it out without asking and for sure delete it if I'm not happy, but I could also save my time and ask decent people for their advises before running into this.
TERA is a great game. Even with its current and constant decline of players (which is partially our fault as community for letting known exploiters run wild and create a hack that caused a lot of controversy) TERA has been here for 5 years already, and that's a lot to say already for a game most people gave it only a few years of air after the original crew was replaced.
If you like to pvp, go to mount tyranas, but the PvP won't happen until you reach max lvl. If you wish to not deal with that, tempest reach would be your best bet. These 2 are the most populated servers. As a freshman, is always good to ask for help. Learn the class you choose as your main, so you won't have problems later on with picky ppl.
Give it a shot I say, there's a lot more, but you will only be able to see it once you jump into the game and see it for yourself.
the gearing revamp is ok but it is a lot of grinding, so you should expect to be putting in a lot of effort
overall the population of the game (especially the hardcore engame population) has severely dwindled in the past yr - there still are people but many have been driven away from the game (including myself) and reasonably so
however if you're playing casually or with friends i think the game is still enjoyable and if you want to test the waters and play just to try it, i would say go for it. you may end up really enjoying it so its worth a shot.
as for your question - if i were in your shoes, no i would probably not start playing tera. i definitely have bias after years of playing and seeing the ups and downs of the game so thats just my opinion, your experience will probably much different than mine would be if i started over
edit: another thing i will say - of the MMOs i have played in general tera players are not as willing to help new people. theres nothing necessarily wrong with that but don't take it personally if you are declined for runs or no one seems interested in teaching you. its unfortunate but it comes with the game having a very niche community with many of the players having played for many years (another example of this would be FFXI)... however that being said, although it may not seem like it, its pretty easy to make friends on the game, just have to be patient and friendly
@Feenox Idk about the grinding you mentionned, I can't recall it was that hard at the start. How long would you estimate to match the endgame content with full days of gaming session ?
I'm waiting for Bless / Lost Ark and a few more years for camelot unchained but those aren't coming in the next weeks.
For now I could just not decide if I go back the my old Vindictus or TERA as I need some real action fights.
@allofspaceandtime yeah will probably do it idk. I'll create on MT and.. we'll see.
I've seen quite a new classes are out. I'm a mystic by heart but I want to change a bit, let's say oldschool warrior or what's nice with the ninja/gunner ?
edit: to explain it more, the way endgame gear progression used to work was that you would get gear either from drops from dungeons, or you would craft it (best in slot) and then enchant from +1 - +12, and for best in slot enchant to +15. every major patch, 2 new gear sets would come out: one mid-tier set and one best in slot set and you had to get the materials and enchant all over again. the way it works now is similar to how blade and souls gear progression works - you enchant your weapon from +1 - +9, and then you upgrade it to another weapon, enchant from +1 - +9, and upgrade again, enchant again. so basically, it is the same weapon every major patch from now on but you are continuously upgrading it. i havent played much this patch but if i remember correctly you can also get the mid-tier gear as drops (instead of upgrading low tier gear).
Especially from EU, prob you gonna play with 120~150 ms and this game is all about ping (much more than skill) cuz it was never been tested outside of korea/sub-30 ms environment and it will never will.
If you rly like Tera, just play on EU with 2 digits ping figure.
is hard to say at least it is free, but we can feel than the game is old and than the game doesnt shine anymore like before, it is just than it is hard to find a good mmorpg, so by default tera is fine, because other mmorpg are not so good
well since than you say you speak french and than i saw some people post in spanish in general forum i will use french
But fun is subjective. You'll never know if you don't try it out yourself.
If anything, I would say it's worth trying.
Also could not decide yet on which class to (re)start with. I think I'm gonna be a warrior oldfashion style; but those valkyrie look quite appeelling too. And I have no ideas about the new ninja/gunners too.
Economy reset with the latest patch meaning gearing on NA is not easier anymore. Every region is pretty much on equal footing when it comes to grinding, which is bad because Ktera is grind heavy.
Enmasse also is not keen on making any regional changes.
And the most important thing is you have 13ms on EU. There is nothing worth sacrificing that kind of ping. I would never advice people to play on other regions with 100+ms.
