adding token to lootbox

is there a possibility of adding token to lootbox: you get 1 token every time you open a lootbox
- so in the end, if you dont get what you want with enough token you can then buy the item that you want. loot box is a lucrative business for both player and dev, however i've seen so many people got burned and quit over loot box, believe me, the loot box players are the ones spending most money on this game, they provide contents to sell to the grind and f2p players, w/out them the economy will not sustain, so if a lot of them quit it will cause server economy to lose balance
- think about it, example AV has 3 dragons and 1 phoenix in broker for last month and they are not selling at 600k listed, TR has over 20 dragons/phoenix and listed from 290-700k (with selling price from 200k - 400k), so you can see how unbalance the economy is due to the lack of lootboxers who has item to sell

this might be a lot of work to implement, from the design perspective if you have a universal token or a specialized token (of many different types for each loot box content), but in the end it will keep the player/spender/grinders all happy
- make token tradable, so if you have many types of token and you no longer interested in this particular lootbox token, you can sell it to other players who collect enough for their items

  • Yeah, I've recommended this before, and the Elleon weapon skins actually used this very model. They've also played with tokens before for dragon boxes and other things. So it's not like the idea never occurred to them...
  • Not likely. First of all, most games that rely on loot boxes for money rely on the people that spend thousands of dollars on loot boxes, and they'll get what they want with or without a token system, so not having the token system isn't really going to hurt their bottom line. People that spend thousands of dollars on a game aren't as likely to quit as people think they are.

    Aside from that, any sort of token system likely wont get you what you want for a few reasons.

    - The type of token probably wont be generalised because of the cost differences between boxes, you could say make different tokens for different boxes or box prices but either of those would result in easily 5-6+ token types, or potentially dozens if you differentiate mounts/pets/costumes/weapons/accessories.

    - With the amount of potential different tokens you might never be able to accrue enough tokens for a specific costume or weapon skin unless you only ever buy that loot box. With token costs for a guaranteed costume potentially requiring hundreds of lootbox openings.

    - Tera has a really bad track record with keeping shops updated. If that wasn't obvious by the fact that we have 3 different shops that are planned to get a revamp some time soon, with several other shops that need revamps that aren't planned yet. Any sort of general token shop would be outdated by next update, and a per-lootbox token shop brings us back to an earlier point about never accruing enough tokens without spending hundreds on a specific lootbox.

    Altogether any sort of token system for lootboxes would probably just be a token gesture (irony) that wouldn't really help make lootboxes better, but rather just reward the people who brute force RNG with several hundreds of dollars.

    If you need any sort of proof about the unlikeliness of a token system, the old dragon lootboxes had them, it took a lot to get a dragon from tokens, the tokens themselves were a really rare drop, and the lootboxes cost around $5 each, to top it off, they were removed (to my knowledge).

    Sad but true, and while it's also true that new grounds could be explored and give more profit (like this lootbox revamp proposed), they love sticking with the "tried and proven" formulas, that needless to say, get stale and have their huge drawbacks never solved.

    Ultimately this does no good in the end because someone has to spend all the money in order to overcome the RNG wall to get the items to put on the broker.

    The real solution is for people to simply not buy into it at all until EME are forced to change their business model or be faced with not making enough money to keep going (because businesses are gonna do business things, and the only language they speak is in dollars). If people legitimately hated the system enough, then they wouldn't buy into it, and developers and publishers would be forced to adopt new systems.

    But frankly there are two kinds of people that make this system profitable enough to businesses for them to just outright ignore everyone else. That is people with:

    A: Enough money to burn that they just don't care.
    B: Not enough maturity, willpower, or common sense to cut their losses when they're down.

    Once these two kinds of people agree to boycott RNG lootboxes (protip: they won't) - only then will companies even consider changing their business practices. Because unfortunately the 99% that only account for 5% of the company's total profit mean nothing in comparison to the 1% that funds 95% of the game for everyone else.

    Money talks. And until those with the money decide to stop supporting this system, it won't ever change.
