Complete newb
Hi everyone.
I'm very new here, haven't even downloaded a game yet. I've heard various things about TERA, so here I am - planning to install it shortly, but wanted to test the waters a bit first.
So why am I here? Well, first things first: I've been a gamer since around 1992 (Atari, then Sega Megadrive and so on). I played WOW since Beta until about 4 years ago, then switched to Rift thanks to being made redundant from my job and couldn't afford monthly subs. Also tried Guild Wars 2, Wildstar and Aion. I won't go into pros and cons of the MMOs I mentioned, but let's just say I'm ready to move on.
I've checked out the forums here and it seems like a half decent community. One big issue I've had in the past is listening to griefers and trolls; not directed at me specifically, but basically reading how a few people enjoy making life miserable for others by saying nasty or negative things on forums on in game chat because they're bullies and get their jollies from being mean. Life's too short to have to endure people like that. So I guess I want to know if that's a big thing in TERA.
Aside from that, while I've read a number of threads as mentioned, a general overview of the pros and cons of TERA would be great. As in what servers are recommended, what to expect from the game in general (I've read that it's a grind, but a long-term player's perspective would be more reliable than some random reviewer), whether there are lots of things going on in the world to keep my interest, how easy it is to find dungeons, that sort of thing.
Any help would be great.

Pretty much what they said above.
You can do most of things alone but if you really want to experience most of the content in-game you need to make lots of friends or be in an active guild that promotes learning runs for new players.
Your leveling progress is not hard and quite fast in peak hours, there are intuitive classes like Ninja, Slayer and Valkyrie. Those are not that challenging to being good enought with them and not being kicked for not doing enought damage but only Valk is Top tier in that aspect.
If you are into healers, we have 2 classes, then you will have it really easy on dungeons if you get the gits of it and you wont have to wait that much on queve for dungeons. Only thing healers (priest overall) have it annoying is with the solo content.
Tanks are always on demand, if you are looking for those kind of classes there are 4 classes that can tank monsters and each one has its pros and cons, making berserker the hardest class to play as a tank but being doable. Berserk is a dps and tank class and currently is one of the best dps in game for Slaying parties.
DPS classes will not be something you miss from another games, you have several classes with diferent gameplay styles, being some more easy and intuitive than others but there are some classes that are more challenging to master than others. Warriors and Berserks would be the best examples of dps classes that needs more skill from players to reach its peak and them are top dps classes.
If you are more into PvP Tera have diferent Battlegrounds with diferent objectives, sadly because the current population and the amount of avaliable bgs in-game you will only queve a specific BG each day. Fraywind Cannyon (15v15), Corsair Stronghold (20v20), Skyring (3v3) and Griddion (15v15) are the most played battlegrounds at end-game and they have many diferences that makes them unique in Tera.
Raids parties is not common, most of them are done when events spam bosses in open-world. HH is a Raid dungeon for 20 people and is categorized as the hardest content for PvE.
Civil Unrest is one a week event for PvP but here in NA is more about making alliances with guilds to rule over this than a real competition to get placed in it.
Not sure what info you are really looking but I hope this can help you.
- The action combat system (The main reason I still play the game)
- Art style
- Community (find a friendly, active guild)
- Elins
Cons:
- Lack of content (compared to WOW)
- It's a grindfest (mostly because of the lack of content)
- Optimization (This game is painfully not optimized and probably never will be)
- Game is currently being centered around loot boxes and not content.
- Elins
Bottom line, if you like the combat system and you have a good group of friends, it's a fun game. For me, finding people to run dungeons hasn't been a huge problem (except for Harrowhold). I'm on the server CH, which has a lower population when compared to TR and MT.
I say give it a shot. I've been playing it for years, so obviously there's something here. Level a toon to 65 then if you find the game boring, drop it and move on.
If you like PvP, play on the MT server, most of the major endgame PvP is in battleground which do not pop 24/7, so if you want to hop on and just PvP for a bit playing on MT is probably your best choice since you can probably find someone to 1v1 if BG's aren't popping. If you're the type that loves BG's, you might be slightly disappointed with the lack of active BG community in Tera.
On the other hand, if you like PvE and particularly, variety in your PvE, I recommend taking it slow and levelling up multiple characters. That would be the best way to get the longest enjoyment out of Tera PvE, since most endgame PvE is pretty compact with most players only running about 3-4 different dungeons. You get used to the same bosses and scenery rather quickly, and if variety is your favourite thing in PvE, you might burn out quickly after a few weeks, especially due to the extreme lack of other PvE content in endgame. The only things aside from dungeons are 2 easy/short solo dungeons and some pretty weak elite mobs on the island of dawn for your daily quests.
In short, PvP is slightly inactive and takes a bit of patience if you want to enjoy it. PvE is really linear at endgame and consists of very little variety in content, with not much to break up the boredom of the grind.
its free to play so you don't have anything to lose but time if you don't like it. also take your time and enjoy the different areas tera has to offer. you can skip 95% of the game if you want to level up fast and all. I took my time and solo leveled a mystic in 3 days playing casual and never stepped foot in a dungeon, I did play kumas once and was watching Chinese soap operas with my mom at the same time lol. so yeah, that's how easy it is to get to max level.
have fun and hope you enjoy the game and stay around. tell your friends about it as well......and as always, " have fun storming the castle ".
Really great and useful advice from you all, and that's another sign that people in this game are really friendly and helpful - always a good sign of a happy and decent community. ^^
I was a guild leader and Main Tank (warrior) in WOW for about 8 years, so that role would probably be my first choice. My off-spec was PVP focussed. It sounds like I can do a lot of that in TERA, although maybe less on the PVP side. That's fine because I also enjoy exploring and it sounds like the world is graphically beautiful enough to keep me and my wife busy for a long time.
Thanks guys, I hope to see a few of you in game!
I don't know if it was explicitly said in the previous answers, but your main question, regarding griefers and trolls, this is not a big thing here. It's obviously a thing, every game/site/real life place has them, but it's not big.
Chats consist mostly on shitposting and such, random stuff every day. Every now and then pops a new Elin-hater that just goes on Global with that stupid nonending old "Elins are for pedos" crap and such, every once in a while comes someone who's SERIOUS about it, but they leave very quickly (that is, they get thrown out very quickly) and lose their drive to hate around. Classes sometimes get trolled, specially the new shiny toy in the box, the OP class of the time. But that ain't really much, just some random pricking and such.
Other than that, it's basically only personal. One player who hates the other or just like playing the hate-game (really, had a friend like that, we were always trashing each other and running stuff with each other).
