[CLASS] Archer vs Gunner

I've been wanting to try out a ranged class for quite some time now and can't seem to decide between an Archer and Gunner. It seems Gunners are more popular as I haven't seen many Archers around as of late. What are the pros and cons of each?

Thank you :)

well, the archer get good dps updates, but lack on mobility and sometimes is boring while the gunner is the easy character pple says that is fun and has good dps, so the answer is the ninja is better.

Archer is hella fun to play and can be a serious pain in PvP, but will not get close to the DPS that a Gunner can output. I have mained an Archer for over a year and I do love her. My advice is to just roll a Gunner and have fun blowing stuff up. Save yourself the time, heartache and frustration.

P.S. if you are playing with a ping>80ms, then Archer is a terrible choice. Either way, good luck and have fun!
  • I love archer way better than gunner. Hell I play my archer more often even if she doesnt do as much dmg.
Try out both and see how much yuu like, 1 day character delete doesnt start till around level 40 su getting it tu 30 might give yuu an idea of what yuu like best.

    Question for Gunners....
Do you have to play in melee range to do adequate damage like we Archers do? I would say that is a con if you are really wanting to play ranged class.
  • Gunner is so broken. Its gone under the radar because of ninja patch but quite frankly they are a broken class if played well.

Archer recently had that trap buff where people can't see where they are placed anymore. Really helpful an i think game changing for arches.

Thats just my opinion, people may disagree.

if the boss turn too much, yes you can be at melee, else you dont need to be melee if your tank do his job

Archer traps being invisible is only helpful in PvP tho, so I wouldn't really call it game changing. Hopefully the Crit Factor buff coming up will put us in a better spot.

the problem with ninja it is you need to be close and than you are in cloth, so one mistake and you are dead

Gunner has more dps now, a pet that heals you and attacks after you use a combination of skills, and a large super move that does a lot of damage. The class is locked to only female elf and castanic. Archer is more technical and you must be a better player to be able to extract more damage from it. While leveling up you can use poison arrow to do a lot of damage, at max level that's replaced with cc skills and stuns. Archer can be played as any race and gender.

yup. melee gunner puts out better dps. for me at least.

and gunners don't have any opness atm. its just easier to play.

    PVE:
Go gunner. Far stronger in the current patch.... archers are weak at the moment, need buffs.

    PvP:
    Gunners:
Survivability -- It's a heavy armor class, very durable. Gunner has a pretty short cooldown iframe that resets quite often (if glyphed). The "Recall" skill also grants a very long duration iframe. Gunner is also infamous for having "two retals", or two retaliates. Although she doesn't actually have two retaliate skills, retaliate and the "recall" skill give the gunner two skills to escape a knockdown combo with. Since some classes like warrior and slayer rely heavily on Knockdown combos, and zerks entirely need knockdown combos for most of their damage, having a extra retal skill makes gunners incredibly strong against these classes.
Damage -- needless to say, gunners are one of the strongest classes, second to only zerkers and ninjas (soon to be nerfed) at the moment. Arcane Barrage and mana missiles (or Balder's vengeance if you can tack on that combo) gives massive burst, and scattershot gives one of the strongest poking skills of the game.
CC -- crowd control is arguably the most important part of pvp. Gunners are alright in this aspect. Instead of relying on impressive and smooth looking CC chain combos like chained stuns, long chained Knockdowns, gunner CC is more for kiting. You do have one stun combo, but that is pretty much it. The rest of your CC lies in using mana missiles to snatch off knockdowns in order to delay the enemy, or to keep them at a distance while poking with scattershot. Point Blank is another distancing skill that has the same effect.
Solo fighting -- gunners have very strong 1v1 abilities. They have a extremely strong balance between close-range bursting as well as long range kiting. Having a little healing bot that gives them a LOT of healing (relatively speaking in a 1v1 fight) is incredibly useful as well.
Team fighting -- very powerful as well. In Fraywind and Corsair's, Balder's vengeance gives the power of clenching that close fight, or bursting down a important target like a large group of enemies, a tanky healer, or even a BAM in fraywind. In a group fight, people can hardly pay attention to every single person. This makes it easy for you to hit hard hitting skills like Arcane Barrage and mana missiles without having to actually lock down the target with CC. Currently, brawlers can be said to be the best team fighting dps because of the amount of CC they have. However, after the incoming nerfs to brawlers, gunners will be the strongest. I know lancers are important but without the sheer amount of damage to actually capitalize on a good giga, lancers aren't that strong (plus one of the main reasons they're so important right now is that they counter the CC of brawlers with rallying cry, and since brawler CC is nerfed soon...).

    Archers:
Survivability -- for beginners, this is literally hell. Archers have [filtered] survivability, nothing to debate on that. After a LOT of practice, however, archers arguably have a pretty strong survival kit. They have tenacity to avoid stuns, traps to hide behind, and resetting ranged staggers. More over, they've got a very strong stun kit.
Damage -- Archers have strong pvp damage. Their massive range and damage puts constant pressure across the entire fight. Extended combos like the Rain of Arrows combo gives you a lot of killing potential (ability to kill someone even through healing/shielding support). Archers are very very top tier in pvp. They're extremely difficult, not for the faint hearted. Definitely something to try out, but perhaps not as your first pvp class.
CC -- archers have a very hefty set of CC. They have lots of stuns, staggers, and KDs. The Rain of arrows is currently the longest combo in the game at the moment (unless you count a lancer's semi-infinite combo), not including knockdown chains.
Solo fighting -- as aforementioned, archers have a extremely high skill cap. It's fun and extremely powerful, but I would NOT recommend as your first class. Simply put there are just way too many things such as map awareness, objectives, team synergizing, iframing, etc... other things you should try to learn first on a easier class.
Team fighting -- CAN be very fun in low-mid tier pvp like in Corsair's stronghold. It's pretty fun to just cast rain of arrows on a large group of enemies attacking the gate, and watching the hp bars melt away. Also really fun to snipe people with your charged arrows. In upper tier pvp, same ideas apply as in solo fighting. Much more difficult. Things like skyring and dueling are very hard. Fraywind is doable as a first-pvp-class.

TL;DR -- gunners = easier pvp, incredibly strong. archers = potentially one of the best 1v1 classes, but extremely hard. I like to think of gunners as being useful, and archers as being that "fun challenge". Go with a gunner, but don't shy away from trying out the archer later!!!

  • I enjoy archer personally, but I won't deny that gunner is easier and more OP. Short and to-the-point answer: if you like to win without trying too hard, go gunner. If you prefer more of a challenge, go archer.

Atm, gunner is better than archer in all. Maybe except, gunner can't be elin or male.

Hopely, we get class balance #9 and 10 soon. But, if EME decides to patch class balance in next season, then sorc, archer, zerker and war will be really sux for 6 month. In pug lf party, people will choose ninja, gunner, reaper and slayer over those low tier dps.

EME, please patch class balance #9 and #10 soon.

    Ktera has Talent System.

Anyway, after they've done huge buffs on low tier dps, still Ninja, Brawler and Gunner are normally easier and do more dps than archer, sorc, and war.

Normally, zerker is lowest tier dps in ktera.
