TERA PC VERSION

Hi guys
I just played the open beta on PS4 and even with the issues of freeze and disconnects I really loved the game.
I played FFXIV for 3 years now, and I was looking for a new MMO.
TERA feels so refreshing and immersive.

I would like your guys take on the PC version? How is the game currently? Have regular new content?
Its better than PS4 version?

I might take on PC TERA if its worth it.

Thank you in advance for your guys help :)

Don't have the time to go into much detail but the PC version is miles better than the console version. We have much more content and I'm sure patches and whatnot are going to be faster for PC. Additionally, even tho the PC version isn't perfect it definitely is miles more stable than console verison

If your definition of 'content' is FFXIV patches, then no. We mainly get new gear tiers to grind for and a steady rotation of the available dungeons continuously reissued in revamped form as the main 'content' changes; mind you, this rotation also removes dungeons as available from the rotation, so it's kind of a wash. Occasionally we get an entirely new dungeon thrown in, but that's kind of rare, unless I missed something when my TERA interest went through the usual wane cycle.

There is no advancing main story quest told through patches. The story that the leveling content tells now no longer really has a conclusion either, since the rotations have made a hash out of any coherence there, with parts missing, other parts being out of order, and so on.

You could, if you're feeling generous, call a dungeon a sort of mini-story, that is largely self-contained. But that's kind of reaching. You also have to be rather free with throwing in outside knowledge to turn that into something greater.

We have not seen a level increase since sometime around December 2014 (based on the Gameforge (EU publisher) patch notes, since the NA ones have gone MIA with the website revamp), when Fate of Arun was released.

Skills have been revamped, entire classes changed, and new classes added, but there is very little to none of the Job/Profession stories that FFXIV has, so that doesn't add anything either to the core content. Just some more gameplay choices for yet another alt to make. Mind you, the classes are usually a new take mechanically, so that can be quite fun, but they also often are contentious because their power balancing is usually off at the start (with way too OP as the seeming default) and they usually are race and/or gender locked, making people unhappy.

The latest bit of content added, as in something completely new, was the Guardian Legion and their missions, but that's much ado about 6 open world missions, 5 to 10 minutes in duration, where you beat on mobs (or play Simon Says with frog riders) to collect points and gems to upgrade your gear with. They don't actually do anything on their own beyond that.

We're set to receive some further class updates in the near future, which will change up the gameplay yet again for many, complete with a short story quest about acquiring those new skills, but that isn't really a precursor to some kind of story telling revolution. The other content is still largely the same, repeat ad nauseam to get the materials to unlock the next tier of content via gear upgrades, and then make it go a bit faster until you max out. (Upon which you're either repeating it for a new set of gear to sell or you make an alt, to again grind to the max.)

The only steady new content, as it were, that we have is new cosmetics. New costumes, new hair styles, new mounts. But that's just part of the business model, F2P does need a revenue stream somewhere, and that was picked for TERA's.

Not trying to discourage you, just wanting to give you fair warning of what to expect. TERA is a Korean MMO, so the grind is strong.

Still, it's free to play, so just give it a try to see if you like it? It can be quite a bit of fun, especially with its quite novel action combat approach. Not having to take a hit, and instead being able to avoid it, block it, or just dodge it, is just something that always gives me a certain amount of joy. You can solo as more than a ranged fighter than can play keep away with mobs.

That part just keeps me coming back, even when it's all just the same content over and over again. Just pick a different class for variety, vary the grind spot slightly, and just take a break when it gets too tedious. You can have quite a bit of fun, if things like that can fit your expectations.

In that sense TERA is a bit like an old arcade game, where you learn the patterns, train your timing of when you have to make certain moves, and that way get better at it. Less new content keeping it fresh, more your mastery of the existing content increasing.

I will say that if you enjoy picking up the bits of old story lying around, it will keep you entertained for quite a while. Most people skip over the levelling quests, but there is fun to be had there. Many jokes and other things to discover, but that part of the game has been largely made optional at best.
  • If you're coming from FF14 and onto here, you're going to be in for a lot of disapointment, the only thing that carries this game is its combat, content wise I can safely say it's horribly dry, and unfortunately a lot of the "new" content just re-uses a lot of the old content, by which I mean old bosses are constantly being re-skinned (sometimes not even that) and put into the new dungeons, with only the last boss being unique a lot of the time.

There is no real side content in Tera, crafting is absolutely horrible in this game, the same goes with gathering as well when you compare both games especially. Personally I think Tera is a game I can only deem being worthy to play casually, this just isn't a game worth sinking all your time into unless you want to get bored a lot quicker than you would like, simply because you will be farming the same 2-3 dungeons over and over and over, with very little/no incentive to go back to any old ones, as opposed to FF14 in where you will be re-visiting just about every single dungeon the game has to offer.

In my opinion you're lucky to not be invested in the PC version, since it's clearly being put on the backburner while the console community gets the bulk of resources and management. Both versions need a community manager, who gets one first? Console version. Website gets a facelift in time for what? Console version. First two news posts in the PC section are what? Cash grab events. Posts in the PS4 version on the other hand? Open beta events, a FAQ page, and tweets from the devs thanking the players for existing.

Stick with console. They're gonna be pumping resources into it hard, so you might as well be where the action is.

We had a great Community /manager, one who made events and put a lot of effort into the PC Version but everyone constantly complained and now he's gone.

Spacecats never said his reason for leaving had anything to do with the community. For all we know he just got a better job somewhere else.
Also Spacecats's events blew up the economy multiple times and a bunch of people, myself included, were shadowbanned (this is when you are able to post, but unknown to you no one can see your posts except you) while he was community manager, so I have a feeling our opinions on his time here will differ wildly.

Actually, He did say why he left over and over again on his personal stream that I follow regularly.

Oh, I didn't know he was vocal about it on his personal stream, or that he even had a personal stream. If you have a link to it or even a quote, I'd be interested to hear it. I just figured he found a better job somewhere else.

As far as I know, he isn't yet working. I know he simply said " Leaving EnMasse came a surprise to me " and that was January 19th but I'm not sure it's something people can openly discuss. Here is a link to his stream though.
