New healer, I need help!

Hello, I have been playing TERA for at least a year, probably close to 2 years now. In any game that I play, I always play DPS. I wanted to try being a healer, but any time that I try the healing class, I remember how difficult it is.

Currently, I'm a lv 32 mystic; I created my mystic yesterday. I'm at the point where you have quite a few spells. Which spells should I be focusing on? What rotation should I be using at this level? If you're a mystic, could you take a snapshot so that I could see your spell setup?

I noticed that I have been running out of mana quickly when I'm in a raid. I noticed that my healing with titanic favor is not as effective as I was hoping it would be. What can I do to improve that?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • I have a young mystic as well. Mana becomes less of an issue as you progress, just slap mana regen crystals in your weapon and that should be fine for most of the early levels. Arun's tear is also a net positive mana gain so you can use those for mana as well.
  • I've played mystic at lvl 65 for a little less than a year, so maybe I can give you a few pointers.

First of all, about mana, the solution is pretty simple - battle solutions. You can buy from any general merchant, they boost pretty much everything, including mana regeneration, and there's no level restriction on them, so use them!
Other than that though, you also have a skill called Corruption Ring as a mystic. This can give you a good amount of mana, along with your mana motes like Blingin said.

As for healing spells, your standard (and the one you'll be using the most at all levels) is Titanic Favor. It will become significantly more potent as you level, I promise. Remember that it has a very short cooldown, so even if your party is low on health across the board, you can usually rely on Favor's spammability to get them all up again.

Other healing spells include your healing thrall, your motes, your Boomerang Pulse and your healing totem that you'll get closer to max level.
    - Your healing thrall is very good for saving yourself, but not at the last second since it has a small delay (the clensing aspect is almost instant though). It's also mostly good against unclensable damage-over-time effects or when you need to be able to move while still healing yourself.
    - Your motes will be your main self heal, since at max level you'll have a glyph for them that instantly restores 20% of your max HP when you make one. Also, remember that the motes put a heal-over-time on anyone that picks them up - it's not an instant chunk of health.
    - Your Boomerang pulse is a very strong, very quick heal (and damage, if it hits monsters) that can be hard to land when your party is moving around or is spread out. It's most effective when your dps are grouped up at the back of the boss, where you would hit them all with just one Pulse. It is also usually easier to hit your tank with it, since they'll mostly stand quite still at the front of the boss.
    - Finally, your totem is a pretty weak but very big heal-over-time circle that extends from a totem that you place down a few meters in front of you. It also places a "warding" effect on anyone in the circle, which is like a small damage reduction buff. It's not at all useful for saving people from death, but it's a very handy skill for fights where your entire party will take constantly take small amounts of damage or are very spread out.

Besides healing spells, some very important ones include your crit and mana auras, plus your Contagion. Your crit and mana auras should be active at all times when you're in a dungeon, and try to not stay too far away from your party as their reach is not that far. They also turn off if you die, so always remember to turn them back on again if you res.
About Contagion, together with your crit aura it is pretty much the reason anyone would want a mystic over a priest. It's a significant endurance debuff that you want to put on the boss when it's enraged. As you may know, standard practice is for the tank to enrage the boss at the start of the fight, buff the party if they're a lancer, and then the dps pop all their self-buffs. This is one time you always want to pop contagion too.

Lastly, one very important thing to keep in mind about healing in Tera, is that healers have no "rotation" or anything like that. What makes a good healer is how good your situational awareness is, how well you know the bosses, how well you know your own kit, how well you prioritize your healing, buffing and debuffing, and how well you predict when you'll have to heal, clense or anything else healer-related. One very basic tip to get better at this "prediction" is to not wait until after your party takes damage to lock onto them with Titanic Favor, but to do it beforehand so you can activate the heal as soon as they do take damage.

Lastly, also I want to point you in the direction of the site essentialmana.com. They have in-depth guides to how to play all Tera classes, so you probably heard of them before. Here's their mystic guide, which I see Selenya sent too, where they go over everything from appropriate gear, what spells are most important, and much more: https://essentialmana.com/mystic-guide-pve/
  • Thank you all so much for the replies! Thank you, @fernowl for that great write-up, it answers a lot of my questions! Situational awareness is something I'm going to have to work on. I'm so used to being a DPS where I just have to focus on myself and the mechanics. It does give me a greater appreciation for good healers.
