At this stage, is the game still beginner friendly?

The console releases have sparked my interest in Tera again. I played for a few years around launch, but I don't know if I would be completely lost and left behind on PC now, or if I would be better off starting from zero on one of the console versions.

Does playing on a pretty nice PC make much of a difference these days?

Thanks.

  • Probably Console wont be THAT behind from PC, but its early atm to say. If you can play with a controller go ahead and just try it.
About the pretty nice PC, it does make a difference with fps and graphics overall, but dont expect too much from this poorly optimized game.
  • The game is pretty friendly to get in to and has been for quite some time now. Pretty much the entirety of the level grind is really simple and straight-forward, it's also incredibly easy to reach level cap nowadays, taking minimal time to reach it. Once you reach level cap everyone is given the same set of gear that is used to upgrade all the way until you reach the last set of gear, so every new player has the same starting point at endgame.

As for whether you should play on PC or start fresh on console, there's ups and downs to both options.

PC has an already existing economy which means certain items that you may need might be really cheap or have a large supply, and there are pre-existing money making methods that will probably work for you. On the other hand because there's a pre-existing economy, there's always going to be some amount of inflation which means other items could be more expensive and require money that you may not be able to make easily when starting out.

Console has a really fresh economy, but with that comes a starvation of materials that everyone is going to need so new materials might be extremely expensive or in low supply, while you'll need a small understanding of the game state to be able to come up with money making methods. On the other hand with a lack of pre-existing economy, there's little inflation so you might be able to get items that would be expensive on PC for much less on console.

As for community, you're going to run into elitist jerkbags on both platforms. However on console you're going to run in to a lot more players that have little or no experience with the game, and many more players that are just starting out their accounts since the game only just came out. Meanwhile on PC you'll run into plenty of people that have been playing for a long time and will probably be willing to help out a new player.

Both have their pros and cons, it's up to you if you want to start out with lots of new players and what is effectively a "new" game, or join an older community on an "older" game.

As for having a pretty nice PC, if you're referring to performance PC still has performance issues that haven't and likely will never be solved, even on a high-end PC there's a good chance that you'll encounter performance issues at one point or another.
However a lot of console players have reported performance issues on the console version of the game as well so I wouldn't expect to see too much of a better state of game performance on the console either.
  • This is good info, and sort of how I thought it would be. The console versions (both) seem to be having some serious issues, and I have a feeling that if I started playing there, I would just get nostalgic for my old characters.

The last time I played was right after the reaper class came out, and I really liked that you didn't have to start from zero (leveling wise). Is it the same way for Gunner, Ninja, and Valk (I think those are the newer classes) and how exactly are those classes?

Also, last time, the elite membership was pretty much a must for quality of life type stuff, and I"m just curious if its still the same?

    Thanks again for your help.
  • One other thing....

I just came back from playing both the PC and console versions of ESO, and the huge difference was the add-on's that were allowed for the PC version of the game.

Is that allowed for Tera, and if so, what are some good ones?

  • Apparently two other things..... Sorry for double post.

As far as I know, most 3rd party programs that modify the way the game works are forbidden. Things like nvidia/amd utilities to enhance performance, screen recording/broadcasting programs, or apps to configure gaming mouses/pads are okay (it seems), but officially things like mods, DPS meters and other stuff are not allowed and will probably get you banned if you get caught.
  • Right now Reaper remains the only class that doesn't start at level 1, all new classes (Gunner/Brawler/Ninja/Valkyrie) all begin at level 1 like every other class. Although as I mentioned before the levelling system has been overhauled quite a bit so levelling is significantly faster than it used to be. Overall even with only a few hours of play time a day and minimal knowledge of the "optimal" levelling methods, it should take at most a week to reach level 65. Most players that play through the really "optimal" levelling routes can level from 1-65 in a single day.

Elite status as it stands right now isn't mandatory, but it does offer quite a few benefits that either save you a small amount of money or are just nice to have.
    - Free flying mount is incredibly handy if you have a lot of alt characters and not a lot of money, but flying mounts aren't too expensive.
    - Double dungeon entries is basically the main feature that you'll regret not having. While instance reset scrolls do exist, if you intend to spam dungeons and grind like mad in order to gear out as fast as possible, this is something you'll probably want/need.
    - Extra broker listings is just a nice thing to have if you intend to sell lots of things and/or play the broker to earn money.
    - Double exp makes levelling new characters much easier, although you can obtain double exp boosts in other ways.

Outside of that right now elite status right now mostly has a few really strong perks, and many other practically useless ones.

As for add-on's, mods and all other third party programs, officially you're not allowed to use them. However unofficially unless you're using something to wall-clip, teleport or adjust your damage, most of the third party programs for the game like the DPS meters wont get you banned unless you openly flaunt them. Many long-time active players use some mods, and a very large portion of the high-end PvE community uses DPS meters.

Basically you're not allowed to use them, but EME don't go hunting for players using them unless they get reported for it because they did something game-breaking or against the rules.

The game is more beginner friendly than ever.

A brand new player who plays every day for say... 2 hours max on weekdays can

    - Get to 65 within the first week
    - Farm enough gold in 2 hours from low level dungeons/Guardian legion to upgrade guardian to twistshard in 2 hours
    - Be able to get all twistshard into frostmetal within a 2nd week

Frostmetal is essentially the minimum gear that people are expected to have, and you can have it within the 1st, 2nd week of playing. Gold is incredibly easy to come by via entry level-65 dungeons and guardian legion. If all you cared about was costumes you could still farm 20-25k in those 2 hours every day and buy whatever mount/cosmetic you wanted using low tier equipment.

Even if you are a 100% f2p player and you don't even support the game buy purchasing elite, you can still get a char tostormcry in a reasonable amount of time (the first month probably with ~2 hours per day of playing, not afking, but farming dungeons and GL.)
  • You guys are really making this tempting pulling me back from brink of the consoles. I played the tutorial on ps4pro, and it was fine, but I kept thinking about all the stuff I didn't have that was just sitting there in my bank on the PC.

You know, important stuff, like swimsuits for all my characters. And speaking of characters, the 8 plus character spots from being a founder are great too.

  • The important thing if you're looking for beginner-friendly will be to get into an active guild that admits new players. That way you can go with guildies when you try out new dungeons and get the mechanics explained to you beforehand. Leveling up is pretty simple, but there is a pretty sharp learning curve for dungeons after the first 412 tier.
  • So, after a big pain of updating (kept hanging up on the patch, and then other issues....fixed when I installed to C directory), I finally logged back into my account.

My maxxed characters are at 60 (Priest, Reaper, and Sorc).... I"m guessing the cap moved up to 65? My UI and skillbars are crazy out of whack....not to mention my inventory and bank.

    Btw...Is there a 100k gold cap for non-elite?

Anyway, its good to actually play the game again. I have a low level gunner I may play around with to get the feel of the game back.

    Thanks

Yes, new cap is 65, and it's quick to reach. Then you'll start your gearing up starting with Guardian gear, which is pretty easy to do. As been said above, the game has pretty much always been new player friendly, and to a big extent even the community as well (there are ALWAYS the idiotic elitists that think you should know all since start and have all gear ready cause hurr durr X months after new gear patch but those are easy to avoid). The gear revamps every now and then could be considered a big reason to this, the ones that play for long can get their top end gear quicker but it doesn't make everyone just have it and require it when you drop into the game.

No known gold cap, if I recall there's some upper limit on inventory gold of some millions but never reached it (max I had was like 450K in total), but bank's limit is on the high millions, if I recall not even Kamizuma has reached it with his ~80M or such.

And yeah the inventory and, bank and skill bars got messed up on some major updates (heck some small ones did it too) so you'll have to re-organize them after so many changes and non usable items that should get either sold or discarded. Check your item descriptions, campfires, charms and some HP potions can be sold to merchants for some gold, along with some other items. There's also a load of TP scrolls that don't work anymore since the dungeons got removed or the TP changed maybe.
  • Thanks....was kind of hoping there was a 100k cap (maybe Swtor was the game I was thinking of)... guess that means I only have 100k.
