Dear BHS (New Female-Only School Costumes Rant)

Once again BHS has forgotten that males go to school too. This is quite sad :(

There's already like 4+ school outfits that are female-only...

BHS hasn't forgotten, it just knows that...

The thing is, BHS won't use resources on making something that it will not sell. The male school uniforms are something the NA market been asking for since 2012, but apparently, on the Asian market, male stuff doesn't sell, so it would be a waste of resources of BHS to make something they cannot make money on. It is sad and it pains me, as i also want a school uniform for males, but that's just how marketing works.

We are gonna have to settle for the only school themed outfit for males out there, which is the Jeans and Jacket costume, which pretty much is the spite image of how College students in the USA dressed on the 70s

There is a market in NA not being touched by Blue Hole, other venues have seen it, other venues are making a profit off it. Trying to figure out how to make this less of a rant about TERA being a Asian game with a very narrow mindset when it comes to NA market but they publish what they see on their side of the World and hope it sells here. at least that is what I am seeing. Would love some sort of NA rep to help them create more for NA.

I believe EME ran a costume contest a while ago, where WE got to design the costumes. I'd love to have those more frequently. LOOOVE.

At the same time, I think a lot their marketing appeal, even in North America, is tied to its Asian influence and style. My guess is that, even in North America, they see that as their core audience (and their sales figures may back that up). That doesn't mean that there are not additional audiences (just like I'm sure there are even in Asia), but it's a question of how much effort is spent on them. And honestly, within the last year, it seems to me that BHS is at least trying to make some male fashion in a bunch of different styles that are outside of their traditional comfort zone (whether they've been successful or not...). But certainly, on the balance, they continue to play to what I would say is their "base" a lot of the time.

The one thing I'd say in general is that the general request for male fashion, school uniform notwithstanding, tends more towards in-lore-style armor looks and designs, which they already kind of have in game. I don't actually want them to do this by any means, but let's say for the sake of argument that they never had fashion coupons and all the armor costumes had been treated like regular cash shop costumes; my theory is that, all things being equal, these designs might have sold better for male characters around here than the typical cash shop designs.

@counterpoint I have seen some energy that would hint that they like to entertain more ideas. Some things I would enjoy would be a quarterly contest for the player base to design a theme outfit that would go inline with the season coming, Example during the summer have a contest for NA player base to design a winter themed outfit. This could give the player base one month to present their entry, En Masse and Blue Hole 2-7 days to judge then 2-3 months for Blue Hole to produce the outfit. A simple and easy way to get the player base and the company producing the game involved with each other. The cons of this is Blue Hole should take a lot of pride in producing the outfits rather then reskinning old ones or you going to cause issues with the artist who designed the outfits. Take the Gothic one, the designs presented looked amazing, once they got in game they lost a lot of the appeal. The hem on the bottom of the skirt no longer had a V flow to is (Higher in the front and V'ing down in the back), instead is was a simple bell cut. I had a point here some where but think the caffeine wore off and the train holding my thoughts left.......
  • Well, the issue is that they don't only have to serve our region too. They can't do contests for us all the time and leave all the other global regions out. They have a limited amount of staff to actually create the costumes anyway. Plus, I think the artists would find it a bit constraining -- even with the last contest, BHS picked the theme and chose the designs they found most palatable/feasible (and as you say, they had to simplify a few areas in production). And besides, an occasional contest design contest is nice, but if it happens all the time it seems like they're just outsourcing their work to volunteers.

If they're really worried about figuring out what people here want to buy that is being underserved right now, there are probably ways of doing some market research.

I don't usually think petitions would work, but maybe if enough players of male characters signed a petition saying they were interested and would definitely buy a male school uniform, it'd show developers that there's at least a market. Not saying they'd care and do something about it, but at least you'd get your voice out there in a concrete fashion.

Because right now, all they see is that the most popular classes in the game are the new ones, and they are without exception gender locked to female.

They can do this with all the regions, from what I understand J-TERA has produced designs as well as costume voice overs as example. If you take the big picture and back up it "Seems" NA makes them a profit but gets the least attention. I do not want it to seem like I am pointing that out with not at least giving options to make it better.

Do they do any market research to the players that did invest month 6 month or 12 months into the game? What attracted them? Why did they leave? New venues coming out are now presenting kawaii styles as well, will they continue to hope that focusing on that will continue to prolong their revenue or will they try to balance? In the end TERA belongs to Blue Hole and they will do as they please with it as well players will do the same, they will continue to find venues that appeal to them as more options come to the front.

Resources? How long did it take them to make these outfits, dye them a different color and call them new? There are millions of these school outfits now and they all look alike, I doubt it took them very long to make these 'new' costumes. BHS might as well take the Legitimate suits, change the colors, add another layer of clothing, change the tie, to make a male-only school uniform but they are even lazy at that and a bunch of pedos.

Until people show signs that they are buying Male costume, I don't think ranting on forum will show anything. Recent this year costumes, such as Straight Outta, Hello Kitty, Hydrath, Swagger, Lucky Dojo, Rocker, Varsity have male version, but you must be lucky to see male characters to wear one. Not only Male character are rare, they tend to not even buy stuffs, most people run around in fashion coupon outfit. This year there're only 2 outfits that are exclusive for female, which is Frost Silk and School Uniform, TWO, and people are complaining.

I seen a lot of Popos running around completely decked out in outfits and most that I know that play them invest heavily in their characters. Out of the 5 active (Active meaning they log on once a day and can honestly say they have several Popo alts as well) in our guild, each one is all about pimping out their character. So the interest for male outfits is here just a lack of variety for them to do so.
  • Yup, males go to school too. Only my male characters buck dress codes and school uniforms, and prefer instead to wear leather jackets, pirate getups and steel chain and plate mail.

I've pretty much accepted that BHS isn't going to spend much time making costumes for male characters. I make do with the few that we do have.

Yes, I have spent money on costumes for male characters. Yes, I would probably do so again, if they released a new male costume that looked really cool. Will they sell as well as female costumes? Probably not. But at some point the market for female costumes will become oversaturated, especially if they just keep on pushing reskins of old costumes, and at that point it would probably be in their own best interests to make something new for males (I know I'm in the minority, but I'm definitely not the ONLY player who plays male characters)
