So... Awakening skills names...

Or, I guess, "Apex" (??) skills. Let's forget about how broken the classes that are getting awakening will be for pve, and about how pvp will be even more dead for a moment, and just take a look at the skills names...

Berserker
  • Unleash: sure
  • Unleashed: Dexter/Sinister/Beast of Fury: ??wat???
  • Unleashed: Rampage: this one's fine I guess

Lancer
  • Super Leap: it just sounds dumb, ok?

Mystic
  • Mass Teleport: err

Priest
  • Mass Divine Intervention: what's with the "mass" stuff? just doesn't sound good

Slayer
  • Punishing Blow: no.
  • Savage Strike: fine, whatever
  • Unsheathe: this triggers me the most (yes, I main slayer), becoming our highest damaging skill, we're not just "unsheathing..." the name just doesn't fit the usage of the skill at all.

Warrior
  • Blade Waltz: pls don't mix Tera Warrior with blade dancer stuff from other mmo's
  • Blade Frenzy: same as Slayer's "Unsheathe," high damage, 3 min cd, it just doesn't fit.
  • Aerial Scythe: not much creativity put into this one... "it consumes edge just like scythe, except you jump while doing so... Aerial Scythe!" ...

Some passive skills names are also meh but since they're just passives I guess it's fine...

What do y'all think?

    For Zerkers, if you go back to what Berserkers were in the past, the phrase "Raging Fury" would be one way to describe it. And the skills effects as they look in the trailer do look like someone that has gone into a "Raging Fury".
    Unleash: sure
    Just straight up use the word "Berserk". Yes, I am aware that you used the word for the Zerker Tanking patch, but Berserk truly represents the nature of the skill, and the theme of the entire Berserker Awakening.

    Unleashed: Dexter/Sinister/Beast of Fury: ??wat???

    I kinda get the first two, but I think these are better expressed in Latin. Put together, they could represent an internal struggle of trying to stay on the right path when going "Berserk"/
    Dextra - Typically used to reference right-handed-ness today, often linked with good/luck/chivalry in the past etc.
    Sinistra - Typically used to reference left-handed-ness today, often linked with the devil or being unlucky.

    ====

    For Warriors on TERA, this has always been about the twin swords, because twin swords are cool. I've always debated a stylistic theme to put onto warrior, and two come to mind: Dancing with Blades or Being a Storm of Blades. Having seen some gameplay already from other regions, I think that going with the Storm of Blades idea actually is fitting here.

    Blade Waltz: I like this and dislike it at the same time. It would fit into the Blade Dancing theme because you would go Blade Waltz -> Skill -> Blade Waltz -> rest of combo, making a set of three. But it doesn't really feel like the name fits into the theme of causing a Storm with Blades.

    Same with the other two names, but I feel that they less fit into either theme.

    ====

    I think you can guess where I am going here. For each class, you can place a theme on it and then decent sounding names that relate to that theme can be given to the skills.
  • Looks like they didn't even put in the effort of naming the skills at all. Why is it that couple years back we make fun of gameforge but it's the other way around now.

    I'm not sure why they don't just use the translated names that often sound better than their names.

    Mass Divine Intervention -> Salvation
    Super Leap -> Righteous Leap
    Words of Vitality -> Innervate

    etc.

    Superleap for lancers..... Why not call it Righteous Leap like it was originally called?

    even words of vitality is fine, better than divine charge

    "Dexter" and "Sinister" are literally latin words for "right" and "left" respectively. So "Unleashed: Dexter" will be a swing with your right hand; "Unleashed: Sinister" will be a swing with your left hand. It honestly makes a lot of sense.

    Also, if you're looking at the Gamestop article, you probably want to instead look at Gameforge's Excel spreadsheet that goes over each skill individually, as they're kinda far more likely to be accurate, as proven by the fact the Gamestop article called the Berserker skill "Dexterity" (which is wrong), and Gamestop has it listed as "Super Leap" for Lancer, while Gameforge has it listed as "Righteous Leap."

    Oh, wow. Yikes.

    Well, EME has been known to be pretty [filtered] in the past, so at the same time I can't entirely say I'm surprised. I'd like to think the names between the NA and EU versions won't actually be different, though. But that may be giving them too much credit.

    At the end of the day, I don't personally care too much about names as long as they do what they're supposed to do, but it is admittedly curious why the two English-speaking publishers of the game don't come together on some of the simplest things like names. For example, "Mass Divine Intervention" as listed on EME's site is listed as "Divine Vitality" for Gameforge's spreadsheet. "Protective Response" on EME, is "Words of Judgment" on Gameforge, "Devoted Favor" EME, "Dedicated Vigor" Gameforge.

    Something came out from one of Gameforge's pages for Awakening, specifically for the Warrior part on their website, where the article begins in French, does most of the piece in English and ends in German.

    It transpires that on EU, since TERA EU is based in Germany, everything gets translated from Korean into German first, then the other two languages. If the Gameforge Staff are okay with the English translation given to them by EME, then they stick with it, but if they decide that they can do better, then they change it.
  • There is a guide for this skills, about how to replace old rotations for each class, with new skills , I play 5 of 7 classes

    We could also make fun of how they used the same icon for Words of Vitality and One-Inch Punch.

    Considering the class pages are still a mess (even though they were reported basically the day after the website revamp) it seems whoever designs the web pages isn't given the proper images/names/descriptions to work with. Ah EmE.

    As for the skill names, honestly I'm fine with them. It's interesting we got names different than the english version of EU but they're also wayyy better than the initially proposed names that EU had teased (which they later didn't use for the most part).
  • Some of the name changes are really weird too, it almost feels like different people did different names.
    Lancer in particular changed the name of Thorn Shield to Retribution Shield, which makes it sound like they're going for a sort of WoW-esque paladin vibe with Guardian Barrier and Divine Protection. In that case Righteous Leap would fit the theme they have going, but instead they changed it to Super Leap.

    Although stuff like Unsheathe and Aerial scythe both sound bad and lazy.

    This seems unlikely though, I think EME actually just cropped out the icons themselves from somewhere instead of using actual icon files. The reasoning being if you look at the border for the icons on the EME page, some of them are inconsistent and many of them look like the left side was cropped off too much. Some even have black lines running down the right side.

    To further back this up, the icons on the Essentialmana page and EU Tera spreadsheet don't have this issue, or at least aren't as apparent.

    It really just feels like whoever does the web design simply doesn't double-check their work a lot of time or doesn't care enough to fix it.
