Flying Mount Checkpoint Races

Ok, so we finally got flying mounts!
Unfortunately,they have some restrictions;
1) They can only be used in a few areas
2) They only fly for short periods before you are forced to land and recharge them.
3) You can't get one until you reach level 65 without buying it through the store.
So... a few suggestions that could make the flying mounts a little more fun;

Flying Mount Checkpoint Races (Could be an event or a permanent thing)

1) Players could either que for the race and be randomly placed instance-like with 4 others,
Or there could be a dedicated location to goto (Freeholds for example, or any other place
that is pretty much abandoned now).
2) The race could be set up to rent each player a random mount from all the ones available.
3) A flat fee for entry would be charged for the race, regardless of level; say 5g-10g.
4) Players could enter as many races as they want each day.
5) Rewards for placing 1st could vary, ranging from gold, to alkahest, to feedstock.
6) Special rewards could be earned for finishing 1st in 3, 5, or 10 consecutive races, with
accompanying achievments and/or titles earned.

The Mechanics of the Race

1) Obviously, there would be checkpoints along the course that players would have to reach,
in a particular order.
2) Checkpoints could be set up as something simple like rings to fly through, or they could
be like the Vista location Walls or the Pillars we had to locate for an achievement. The goal
would be to interact with the Wall or Pillar to verify the checkpoint. (Personally, I like the
idea of floating rings to fly through, though that may be difficult to set up)
3) Reaching a Checkpoint would extend your flight time by a fixed amount; say 1 minute, with
each checkpoint seperated just enough to allow very few mistakes or course corrections.
4) If you run out of flight time before reaching the next Checkpoint, you are automatically
disqualified.
5) For those that keep failing and need some practice, there could be a short practice course.
6) The Checkpoints would have to be at different heights and near obstacles that may force a
landing if touched (which is seriously annoying, atm). If the Checkpoints are rings, they would
have to be intangable to keep players from being dropped out of the sky for touching them.
7) To keep players from memorizing a particular course too easily, there could be 3 or more
courses that players would be randomly placed on each time they enter.
8) To sweeten the idea a bit, one achievement could actually reward the player with a free
mount, maybe for the 50th or 100th race won. (it wouldn't have to be a store-bought mount, it
could be the free one players earn from the level 65 quest, but it would be winnable by any
level player for doing the achievement)

**Final Thoughts**

This could be alot of fun, and it would be a gold-sink, and a time-sink, and it would allow
lower level players the chance to earn a mount.

As a side note... More Vistas (with achievements) should be added. They would only be
accessible using the flying mounts, of course!

Lastly, why aren't the Dragon mounts we currently have available being made into flying
versions? That kinda seems more logical than a flying lion, right? Just my opinion...

The only dragon I want to see as a flying mount is the Kaiator black dragon. The non-flying Chinese dragon mounts we have now would look pretty strange with wings IMO.
  • The Kaiator Dragon would be an awesome mount! If would end up being the most expensive mount the store sells, unfortunately, if they did bring it to players... the demand for it would be that high!
What about the idea for the race though? Yes, No.. Maybe?
  • The Kaiator "Dragons" are actually wyverns. They have no front legs and thus would need to be animated to run like "dragons" from Skyrim (wings doubling as forelegs), given front legs, or be made a flight exclusive mount.
  • Dragon mounts would be cool, though I'd also like to see flying wolves. Flying wolves, you say? Well yes, I heard that KTERA might be getting flying pigs; at that point anything is possible, right? :p

Flying races would also be fun, though like everything else competitive in game, I think it would favor those with lower ping / better internet / better computers (or also in this case, faster / better mounts, perhaps bringing in a p2w aspect). Though you could also throw in solo timed versions that could be completed once a day as a VG daily or something. Could be incorporated as a new quest after acquiring your first flying mount as well - sort of an "intro to flying" kind of quest that has you maneuver around a bit to get a feel for how they work (not that they're difficult to figure out or anything, but usually new things have intro quests just because). I mean if they're going to go to the trouble to recode all of the in-game areas to include flying, it only makes sense to make use of the new system for more than just flying around for the sake of flying.

Ping could maybe affect the performance of the player, but mounts would be equalized because they would be rented just for that race from the race master, all would all have the same speed... no bringing your own mount.
Timed versions would be fun for achievement or title value, but then again, it's not much of a race if you run by yourself!

But, it'll only happen when pigs fly... oh, wait...

Equalized mounts... hmmm... yeah, that could work.

Timed solo races wouldn't be much of a race, I guess, but could still work within the confines of the game (I've played several games that included similar concepts). Let's say there was a flying intro quest, the premise being that a Federation outpost is about to be overrun by archdevan forces, and it's your job to fly to x number of checkpoints around the map dropping off reinforcement requests to different camps. Let's say 10 checkpoints.. you start the quest with 10 reinforcement requests in your inventory, and you have say 1 minute 30 seconds to pass through/over all 10 checkpoints to drop off the requests. If you make it in time, the Valkyon forces successfully defend the outpost, and you get X gold plus loot (could be included as a once a day daily.)

As for multiplayer races with equalized mounts... could make things really interesting if you incorporated different bonus pickups floating at random spots in the sky, like temporary turbo boosts, or slowing / grounding debuffs that you could launch at other players to slow them down. Otherwise it would just be a bunch of players flying the same speed down the same path over and over again; pretty much once people figure out the ideal flight line, the race results would be mostly RNG. Unless the checkpoints themselves were randomly scattered to different locations from race to race. Either way, I approve of the general idea.
  • Has anyone done CS lately you almost always hit the first gate at the same time as everyone else in your team, unless you make horses like cars and that you need to break and drift and crazy stuff like that. I think that getting tied with people would happen almost non-stop.

I think what would be easy and a small step toward flying races is just having more quests that you need flying mounts for.

Don't get me wrong I think this idea is great but I think the current flying mount controls would need to be changed.
