  • @Vkobe that IS the full picture, as I had seen it. I did not crop or edit anything at all. Simply copy/pasted

Didn't read the whole thread. Sorry. Just having my coffee. But seeing the ad, I can only say that my experience in the internet makes me sadly understand what the 'O' mouth is about to certain people who surf certain sites. I myself am guilty of surfing some of those random image sites which have plenty of non sexual intended pics forcibly made sexual intended through captions or tags. The other flaw I see with the ad is that it does look like it's for a cheap mobile game for it's simplicity, and even the way too closed up face of the character. I do know females have been over-used as ad points for these kinds of games, but there's certain things one can do to make them look both sexy AND strong and awesome. Perhaps a more zoomed out female, an actual background, and less pink.

Just my opinion. Saying it how I'm seeing it, and respectfully. Because I know some human being made this ad trying to go for the best interest of the company.

This reminded me of another advert so I'll just spam:

Back when the art didn't resemble worn out 20 year old WoW style, I miss TERA back then

One thing about those ads. I suppose because nobody ever thought back then that elins would be so famous in the NA Tera community, they featured no elins at all. Or maybe we were going to get an elin-less Tera?
  • how about if you dont like tera ads, poke the higher ups in maybe making a contest or sth (like they do for screensaver art) i'm sure people have good imagination for stuff like that especially when they are players of the game themselves...

Was just thinking about that too. A tera ad contest. Sounds good on paper.

Tera needs animated ads to sell it, I think. Even a four second gif of the game's action combat would move a lot of people to click the ad. Would be far more convincing than a Castanic with her mouth open.

short gif or short flash animation, either would be better than that generic looking ad. even a static with the same castanic but facing a bam/boss...something besides just a half face with an open mouth >.<

Here's how you improve this advertisement:

Replace "Play Now" with "Come Play, My Lord"
    -and-
Zoom out of the Castanic so that we also see her torso.

I guarantee the ad will be 10/10 would click and play.

Because they are not as famous as they are in Asia and much of the reason they are is because of min/maxing. Much of the community that was here left once Elins started to become focused for other games, FFARR is a major venue they went to. There is a break down of the most played races in NA the first 6 months of TERA, Castanics came in first, Elf and Elin closely with each other for second.

This is not far away from "Play for free My Lord"

We also know, or believe at least, that the gaming tastes of the NA playerbase were more testosterone fueled compared to Asians. As in, more serious man stuff, with buff men and tall strong women. Asians seem to have less problem going for cute, colorful and even wacky on their gaming tastes. Though I'm mostly referring to the Japanese. So it was a surprise to me that elins were even released here in NA at first, much less seeing so many around. Sure, I know about those min maxing stories about how elins were faster here, or had more reach there. But now you see many elins in Tera who are not going for min maxing, and you see them decked in all the latest cute outfits..... though lately I see quite a lot of elins in devilicious outfits. Not sure how to comment on that.

This always comes up, but... it's because of gender. Castanic (Male + Female) and Elf (Male + Female) were more popular than Elin (Female only). If you split the other races out by gender, Elin was the most prominent, even back in the day. And really, they've been both popular and controversial since the very launch of the game (and before), even before people thought they were needed for "min-maxing" (which has been mostly normalized away now) so I'm not really sure this is anything new. People likely would have defected anyway no matter what, as BHS doesn't have the resources to compete with bigger brands. Maybe the Elin focus was the "icing on the cake" for some people.

But anyway, still, the reason for avoiding Elins in ads would be mostly because (as I alluded to) they're popular and controversial to different groups (polarizing), whereas Castanic is more neutral in that sense. If you were advertising TERA on an English site focused on Asian culture, then I'd use Elins as the mascot, but for the broader gaming audience, Castanics are the safer bet.

Aside that, to go back to the original point, a single ad like this isn't necessary going to get you to play anyway. The point is mostly to catch your attention and help you remember the brand/name. Just seeing that image alone isn't necessarily going to convince someone because it tells them nothing. But if they're heard of TERA before, and see that ad, they may be like "oh yeah, I remember that game...". Also consider people who may have played TERA in the past but took a break -- these kinds of prominent reminders don't need to say much other than "remember this game?". So in that sense, I don't think it's such a bad advertisement... though I do think it could be better.

That is a wild assumption that NA culture is more Male based than Asian and I have a hard time believing it. Reasons I been around both and experienced how defined Asian cultures can be to the Man in charge style of thinking as well as highly testosterone driven.

As for when the game released Hit Boxes did vary a lot, Elins did have a smaller on as well as a longer reach, this mixed in with a slightly faster animation speed made them very popular with mini maxing crowd. Not worth agruing about, those that prefered the TERA at release left and won't come back nor will Blue Hole change the direction in which TERA is going.
