One thing about those ads. I suppose because nobody ever thought back then that elins would be so famous in the NA Tera community, they featured no elins at all. Or maybe we were going to get an elin-less Tera?

Because they are not as famous as they are in Asia and much of the reason they are is because of min/maxing. Much of the community that was here left once Elins started to become focused for other games, FFARR is a major venue they went to. There is a break down of the most played races in NA the first 6 months of TERA, Castanics came in first, Elf and Elin closely with each other for second.

We also know, or believe at least, that the gaming tastes of the NA playerbase were more testosterone fueled compared to Asians. As in, more serious man stuff, with buff men and tall strong women. Asians seem to have less problem going for cute, colorful and even wacky on their gaming tastes. Though I'm mostly referring to the Japanese. So it was a surprise to me that elins were even released here in NA at first, much less seeing so many around. Sure, I know about those min maxing stories about how elins were faster here, or had more reach there. But now you see many elins in Tera who are not going for min maxing, and you see them decked in all the latest cute outfits..... though lately I see quite a lot of elins in devilicious outfits. Not sure how to comment on that.

That is a wild assumption that NA culture is more Male based than Asian and I have a hard time believing it. Reasons I been around both and experienced how defined Asian cultures can be to the Man in charge style of thinking as well as highly testosterone driven.

As for when the game released Hit Boxes did vary a lot, Elins did have a smaller on as well as a longer reach, this mixed in with a slightly faster animation speed made them very popular with mini maxing crowd. Not worth agruing about, those that prefered the TERA at release left and won't come back nor will Blue Hole change the direction in which TERA is going.

About the tastes in regions, it's been what I've seen myself and experienced. Of course I have no data myself to hold anything as fact. it's just what I've seen around in the gaming industry through videos, interviews and magazines. I know much less about Korean gamers than about Japanese. So I used Japanese as example. And what i saw over there was a lot of colorful things, cute characters, and when it was about the so called awesome, it was mostly thin, soft skinned anime men. (Unless it was made in the 70s or 80s.). As for NA, mostly USA, their gaming had more buff, rough haired and gruff looking men. Less, or no cute at all. Unless it was a cartoon aimed at kids. Even the art in the old NES game boxes were changed to be more gruff and serious for NA releases. That's where those fugly 40 year old looking Megaman NA box art packages came from. And so these things are what I refer to when making my assumptions and opinions. But they are just that, since they are only based on my own experience. :)

As for the tera player base, yeah. Many from the initial Tera playerbase may have left, though I have no data to confirm nor deny it. I started playing Tera when it first released back in 2012. It was a small ad that took me to the EME site because prior to that I wasn't so interested in mmos. of course I don't remember the specific ad. It was 2012 and now it's 2016. But I don't remember it being this ad we are talking about. The one thing I did remembered, and what made me check tera was the simple words "True Action Combat". Not the pictures, not the art in the ad. Just those words.

I just can't see how an angry castan with an angry face, with an open mouth looks porn or hentai.

An angry shout with closed lips would have been better maybe.

I suppose it's about an already old and disgusting meme that probably came from 4chan or a similar site. That's all.

    It could be worse

  • wow i thought i was the only one thought the ad was a FALSE representation of Tera. Personally, it's the pink color that made me think this way; It reminds me of those hentai IMVU ads... which might be an aspect of Tera many of you might or might not agree. It would be better if the pink was replaced with black, gray, blue, red, or anything but PINK. (no offense to pink lovers, but it doesn't work in this context)

At least to me that banner is simply not very creative, it's not "hentai", "perverse" or any of that stuff, it's just not very appealing, that's all. The perception of western audiencies is another curious topic. While these games in general don't have good reviews, they illustrate the idea asian develpers have of the western market:
