Please stop people form hoarding names, and release the inactive ones.

Trying to find a name is so tough in this game, due to name hoarding! 90% of the names I've searched are saved on level 1-20 characters and have not been touched in months! All people do is hoard the names so they can use or sell them later for in game gold, and it's completely unfair.

I do think it should be okay to save a name temporarily, but not indefinitely.. Why can't EME auto release inactive names so that greedy players can't abuse the system, and so that active players can have a chance at landing something decent.

I'm suggesting that all inactive names (specific characters that have not been logged in to) be released after a certain period of inactivity has passed; say, six months or so?

This solution would keep active players happy, and incourage potentially inactive players to log in to the game more, and it would also make it harder for greedy people to hoard names.

Just my two cents,

cheers

Be more creative. If you expect get a common word or a name of fictional character from tv or book, 99% sure will be already claimed, this will happen in all games

I'd totally support releasing names for characters who are let's say lvl 1-15 after certain period of inactivity. Ever VERY unusual names are ofter taken and as you said, most of these characters haven't been out of Stepstone Isle for months or years.

Definitely not for players 60+ as losing name may disencourage ppl from coming back to the game. But for characters stuck in tutorial forever, why not.

and here is our monthly " can we get a name wipe " post.
just a heads up, all the anime names are pretty much taken, tv characters, movie characters, comic books, and so on. as ketoh said, you need to be more creative. I have names saved on all servers, but they aren't any of the types that I listed above, so I don't think they will be a huge demand for them.
these posts are funny and pathetic at the same time, its funny that people expect the name of one of the above to be available after a game has been out going on 6 years now, and its pathetic cause they throw a temper tantrum and expect eme to give them what they want even though they came in late for the game.
eme did a name wipe a few years ago, and people logged back on just so they could keep their names, and even snatched some of the good ones that they didn't have before. and before people say that under 65's should be deleted, it only takes 1 day to hit 65.
also, its already been said by eme staff that they weren't doing a name wipe anytime soon.

There's no need of you being disrespectful.
I often think of changes that I would do personally if I were a game dev, and post about them.
I'm not in this for personal gain, although I would benefit form a name release, my main intentions are quality of life changes that would impact the majority of players. Attention to fine details are what truly make a game great.

I'm just gonna play the devil's advocate and ask: how would EME create a fair system to determine who is actually hoarding and who is not? You can't just automatically categorise the inactive characters which are level 1-20 as name hoarders.
Even if those characters were not logged in to for a long period of time, it doesn't automatically mean that the player intentionally gave those characters certain names just cuz they wanted to sell them in future. You get what I'm saying?

How would you feel if you gave a character a certain name with NO INTENTION TO SELL IT, but just because you neglected playing it for some time, it had it's name automatically "released"? What if that name actually meant something to you? Maybe you just didn't have time to continue leveling it, or maybe due to the FOTM culture, you decided it was not worth the time to continue playing, I don't know. I just don't think that it's fair to automatically assume that all inactive low level characters are name hoarders.

By relying on automation, you also run the risk of bugs causing even more problems in the long run. Let's say a bug in the automated system resulted in active characters' names being released. EME would have a very hard time trying to solve all those support tickets, which would also result in increased operating costs. I would bet they wouldn't want that to happen.

However, EME has in the past released character names after at least giving notice to all players through email. I support that move over your current solution since it at least allows genuine players who are not name hoarding to secure their names on certain characters, rather than automatically punish everyone, regardless of whether they were indeed name hoarding or not.

All in all, I will never support automation when it comes to issues where there are no fine lines to differentiate whether someone is in the right or wrong.

It's fair in the sense that everyone is treated the same, so there's no need to specify a specific 'hoarder'. If you are inactive for six months, your name goes up for grabs, so that someone else can enjoy it if they've been wanting it.

A character name honestly doesn't mean that much to me, but at the same time, I think it would be cool for everyone to be able to have a shot at getting their desired name. This option would also allow new players the advantage of getting a great name, too.

But that's not the type of fairness I'm discussing in the context of my post. Just because everyone is treated the same doesn't mean it's right/best thing to do. As an example, it's like saying that it's good for all stores to do body/bag checks on every single person who enters/exits the store in the name of preventing theft. Ridiculous isn't it?

what about people in the military that are deployed and not able to get online and they are there for 6 months or more and then they lose their names. is that fair. these are just a few issues that eme has to look at before doing things like this. it isn't an easy fix. as far as you thinking im disrespectful, we actually have this same post every month. go back and look for yourself. we are getting tired of the same thing every month and having to explain why. this is one of the reasons that no one from eme staff has replied to this one. they are tired of having to respond every month to the same post. if you are here in may, you will see another name wipe post and server merge post as well.

Instead of a name wipe, how about allowing duplicate names? There are plenty of MMOs that allow duplicate character names. This might actually encourage people to come up with creative names.
