Grey characters?

So what's the deal with the grey characters still being a problem? I played this game when it was subscription based and still it looks like the devs haven't got a handle on the issue. Here's my specs.

CPU - AMD FX-8350
GPU - ASUS GTX 1060 6GB
RAM - 32GB
Hard Drive - 1TB
OS - Windows 10 Pro

  • make sure in your video settings under Character quality the PC limit is set to unrestricted. If it's on a lower setting, it will reach whatever number it's set on, then have other characters be the grey default models (to save on how much the game has to load). If it's already set to unlimited then I don't know what the issue is.
  • Yep it's already set to unlimited.

your amd cpu is known to struggle with the rendering (yes many of the rendering is not gpu bound but cpu bound). Can confirm that you need at least a Ryzen

At least a part of the grey characters seems to be that Tera is still configured for its minimum specs. (Which still seems to be 256 MB cards.) The Unreal Engine used by Tera doesn't seem to really do dynamic growth well, or at least not with the way it's configured for Tera, so it largely acts as if it was limited that much on all cards.

Also, Tera being a 32-bit app makes more RAM likewise of very limited use. The EnMasse system requirements are still 2 GB minimum, 4 GB recommended. (Even the recommended value of 8 GB I found on one of the Steam pages for it isn't actually fully utilized, that being more about making sure that nothing else you have running gets in the way of what Tera does use. Tera never can deal with more than ~3 GB itself, due to 32-bit limitations, and even that presumes a special flag to be set to let it go above 2 GB.)

So having a beastly computer is often fairly pointless, because the game won't use most of that. Only stressing out a single core and getting more use out of a faster HDD (or better buffering) due to all of the loading from disk that it does.

I do kind of wish that it at least wouldn't be against the TOS to change the texture streaming settings in the ini, if they won't do it for us. I'm kind of curious how the game would run with just those increased.
