not just military personal but even something as simple as a couple growing their fam could nock a player out of the game for 6 to 12 or more months whilst they adjust with their first child , some of them might not come back but you cant say all wont and there can be many other reasons as well that one may need a hiatus from the game
so you get the name , how would you feel if it was then removed from you for any reason "coz some one else wanted it" and believed they had just reason to remove it from you

so even a daddy play tera ?

people just ned to get it in their heads that just because they want something that someone else has doesn't entitle them to it. as mistytera stated above, some people have a life outside of tera and cant spend 12 hours a day or everyday in the game. so why should they be punished and have to lose something they have just because someone new or someone just wants their name. I feel like if these people went to any game that is 6 years old or more, wouldn't be able to get the name they were wanting, and the game company wouldn't cave and do a name wipe just because they cant get their way. eme has done name wipes, and some of the people that did lose their names quit the game. just like in server merges. if eme did another server merge, the name thing would be really bad like it was before, and you wouldn't have a snowballs chance in hades of getting your name then. as many have said, be creative. think outside of the box. one of the reasons why some of us do have the names we have, is because we have been playing for a few years, and yes some of mine are sitting on babysitting island at level 1, waiting for the new class to come out or to try out a different class with.

firstly, I respect your right to your opinion, but I don't agree with it.
secondly, if someone provided me with a perfectly reasonable argument clearly demonstrating that another name release was a bad idea, I would change my opinion immediately.

    ---

    1) speaking of entitlement, you don't actually own your names, everything is owned by EME.
imagine the government started giving out free parcels of land for the purpose of farming and someone got a parcel of land but did nothing with it. another person comes along and says "you got that land for free for the purpose of farming and you are doing nothing with it, let me have it so I can farm" to which the owner responds "first come, first served, give me 500k or [filtered] off". the situation is no different with names, those names exist so they can be used by the community and now people are just sitting on them or have stopped playing.

    2) I am going to go ahead and guess you have a bunch of coveted, short and sweet names for your characters.
May I ask (I would appreciate honesty) when did you get your names? Before or after the name reclamation?
Did you get any nice names from the name reclamation?
Did you loose any names because of the name reclamation?

    3) no one at all is saying that you should have to play 12 hours a day to keep your names.
in fact it's the opposite extreme, 12 months without logging in followed by 3 months notification involving multiple emails where all you have to do is log in one time. I think anyone that is so busy they can't even do that won't realistically be able to play TERA anyway.

    4) I don't care what they do in other MMO's

    5) people quit the game because they lost a name? I lost the name "Hit" on my server which I owned before the name reclamation. I misunderstood the rules because I was suffering from severe insomnia during the time period leading up to the name release. It really sucked having that name taken from me and recently I saw the name for sale in trade chat. Made me a bit annoyed, but none of this made me quit the game and I am happy with all the nice names I got from the release.

    6) One of the reasons why people store names on lv1 characters is because it would be almost impossible to ever get nice names for new characters otherwise. This is BECAUSE huge numbers of names are stored on lv1 characters. (I don't have the perfect solution for this) But EME need to make it more difficult for people to hoard huge number of unused names, this would make it easier for you to get a name you'll like when you want to make a new character without the need to hoard them in advance.

    1. I agree about no one owning anything in tera and it can all be taken away from us at any given moment. the reason why I refuse to buy 30-50 dollar character mounts. I will buy account bound mounts.
    2. a. I don't have any short names for any of my characters, not even any anime names. b. I got my first set of names about 5 years ago, and the rest over the years pretty much all before the name wipe. c. I didn't even try for any of the most wanted names after the wipe. d. I lost a few due to the server merges. all my names are ones I put a lot of thought in, from tv shows that many do not watch, from books that I love, and lastly my actual name.
    3. many people's argument is that they want the names of those that are 40 or below. also many want people's play time taken into consideration as well. in this post and in past posts.
    4. I don't play other mmos anymore , but I know many people here that do.
    5.
    6. I have a few level 1 characters holding some of my names, but they are on other servers, just in case I decide to play on them or I want to try a different race, gender, or class. I don't sell my names, nor would I ever. I did however held a name when I first knew about the ninja class coming to ktera and made the same name on each server due to the play on words due to the class and race, and I have that name still on a couple of servers, but I did eventually let it go on a couple of them. if people think about it hard enough, they will figure out that name lol.
all in all, I think the way they did it last time was fair, giving people warnings ahead of time, but what I have a problem with, is these people that want it taken from those that are level 40 or below, or if their play time on their characters is low. those are the ones I called entitled, spoiled adults and kids. I put a lot of effort into naming mine, why cant they do the same. trying to find a cool or clever name in a 6 year old game is going to take some thought now, and I doubt people will be able to find the 3-6 letter word or anime name they want. I do wish people luck.
  • 3. many people's argument is that they want the names of those that are 40 or below. also many want people's play time taken into consideration as well. in this post and in past posts.

I think you have seen lots of people getting upset because of all the good names on low level characters that are never even loaded up, I don't think anyone has suggested that they should be able to just take the name on that basis alone.

The main path toward loosing a name that I would support is a 12 month absence from the game followed by a failure to respond to numerous warning emails over the course of 3 months alerting the person to a name wipe.

I might support a shorter absence period for leveling characters to prevent name hoarding.
e.g. if you don't login with your lv1 character for 2 months, you get 1 warning email (or in game post to main characters) 1 month before hand followed by a wipe. But I would want to find out from the community if this was supported before implementing it.

As I say, I am yet to come up with the perfect solution to prevent name hoarding and would solute anyone who did.
I think its more about coming up with the least worst solution.

takes time to see if who where a name in used and lvl of character and last used
takes time to come here and whine all good names taken need name wipe
wont take time to think up or research suitable names as this is too hard ~ just sayin

Honestly, this would be an excellent method.

If they notified everyone affected in advance so they have a chance to save their name, and then afterwards released them secretly/randomly to the pool, then yeah. So long as the people at risk of losing them are given ample opportunity to take action.

That said, I honestly don't think the situation is as bad as it used to be before Steam launch. I find it not hard to come up with good one word names even on MT/TR these days. I do feel like it's mostly that it bugs people when there's a name they want to see it "hoarded" by someone who isn't playing that character.

  • As someone who's played TERA since CBT (very very casual player now) and has pretty much the names I wanted because I logged into TERA right at the second the servers first came online...

EME should take the FFXIV/Wildstar approach and just add last names to characters.

    This way:

    1) You have a MUCH better ability to get the name you want, assuming you're trying to create an original name, rather than be Drizzt Do'urden.
    2) You don't upset returning players - nothing slaps a returning player back out of the game faster than finding out all of their characters lost their names due to a server merge or some other bull-poopery.

Or just allow duplicated names and use a unique account number. Then people would actually create some unique original name instead of a three letter name.
