Gear designations: meaning / difference?

Pieces of gear differ in their numeric designations. I have no idea what it all means. How do you know which gear is better by looking at these #'s?

For example, some are: 134(+12)

vs. others that are:

134(+20) / 134(+8)

The numerical designations are something to do with the gear's item level.

Let's go with your first example:

    134(+12)

The +12 indicates that this is better than the current gear you are wearing by 12 points. The 134 is the gears item level.

    134(+20)/134(+8)

As mentioned before, the +numeric indicates that this gear is better than what you currently on. More specifically, the first part of the number. The second number is the gear's max item level. Some gear can be enchanted to increase their item level (as well as give you bonus stats). This is where the feedstock and alkahests come in. In this example, the gear is 134/134 so it is maxed out so no need for enchanting. The first example is a gear that can't be enchanted since it's not in a number/number format.

Edit to add: If you're still leveling, please note that Avatar Weapons (the weapons formed by collecting relic pieces) are better than regualr weapons even if the numbers seems to indicate otherwise. This is because Avatar Weapons can crit far more frequently than regular ones. Typically, you'll go from avatar weapon to better avatar weapons during leveling.
