Tera's identity crisis

First of all I've been playing Tera for several months and I have have two lvl65's. I first started playing Tera four years ago and still have items I have yet to claim from that period of time. With my background explained I feel I need to explain the title to this post and would love some comments about how your guys feel about what I'm about to talk about...

First of all I'm really not sure what the developers think Tera is... How can you produce, what I think is a Fantasy MMORPG with flying horses, swords, and magic, and incorporate modern objects such as high heel shoes, sunglasses, or a police car! It wouldn't be a issue if these modern objects were incorporated in the game world. As an example are there ANY modern roads in the game to drive your car on? How about a modern town in the game? Once your out in the game world everything fits together, besides the stuff on your body, but once your in Highwatch, etc., all you have to do is go up to the broker/banker to see everyone in there modern gear and it seems to be getting worse. Trust me it would be ok to put in a little GTA or a similar theme if it's reflected in the game world... Dragons and cars don't mix!

A game stops being fun when you get triggered by the smallest details.

i drive my police car everywhere, and then I fly on my dragon. lore wise, it doesn't make sense...but its still fun to do.
  • Don't see a problem with, was just wondering how we never got a casino and strip club. Instead of afking and grinding endlessly, I'd like to just "relax" and play some virtual slot machines or zipping virtual alcohol while watching female Elves and female Castanic grinding on stage.

It's not a small detail. It's pretty noticeable. But I'm actually ok with how Tera is right now. It's always been about the gameplay and eye candy. The world of Tera is the setting, but you can do whatever you want in it. Personally I prefer my outfit to look like armor which is why I use fashion coupons. So it's not everyone running around with unimmersive modern outfits, I'd actually say most people have outfits that fit with Teras setting. The only time they took it too far imo was with car mounts.
  • I felt exactly the same when I started playing and every new addition of an out-of-place item or costume made me cringe. Especially police cars and llamas. In contrast, I liked how in BDO most things (definitely not all) had this 'traditional' feeling. The world just felt more authentic most of the time and I wished Tera was more like that.
Nowadays it doesn't bother me anymore because it's a fantasy world, so crazy things are perfectly fine ( I even fell in love with the llama i the end lol ). Also I prefer them releasing all these skimpy 'beachwear' costumes and modern items so players keep buying stuff and hence support the game, over having the publisher shut it down because of no sales.
However I really love looking at characters wearing traditional armor costumes. It's really great at especially when people put effort into their overall look.^^

i dont mind the stuff mostly cause it allows me to rp as a civilian more without having to pick a certain class to get more average looking clothes, and arguable some if not most of the modern clothing can work in this universe. Llamas i dont see how they would be able to fly and they arnt that lore breaking as a mount as they are just a tamed animal, guess they just ate too much magic grass. As for the more scifi/technology stuff well if you dont rp or are a super lorehound then itd kinda fly over your head how far kaiator and castanica's technology is so i can still see those working as well, i think the steampunk set is a more fitting example of early technology. Although I dont agree with the style of the car mounts, wish they looked more fantasy/scifi rather than some well sportscar.

Go to Castanica, and start to open some lootboxes with some Summer Wine, TERA has you covered!!

It even feels a lot more real Casino like when you lose all your real life money on the boxes, the experience is complete! Not to mention you don't even need to go to Castanica to have girls dancing with enough skin shown

Tera does have an identity crisis but it runs deeper than cosmetics. Unique elements of the game like campfires and stamina have been removed in favor of a more streamlined setup more akin to other games. The touted action combat has become rather moot, since 99% of content doesn't require you to dodge and some classes actually encourage facetanking (zerk's awakening skill, unleash, gets a lower cd the more you get hit for example). The open world, which used to have things to do (whether that be daily reputation quests, or just open world pvp) has become barren; all content fluff removed and incentive to do it, eviscerated. To top it off, solo/easy content is typically the most rewarding from a time:gold standpoint, meaning that kind of dull and unchallenging content is what people will find themselves doing most. Lastly, solo content tends to be extremely lucrative despite this being a multiplayer game.

In other words, tera can't decide if it wants to be a skill based multiplayer mmo with unique gameplay elements or a typical themepark mmo with very little making it unique besides elins. Tera definitely has an identity crisis, but I'm afraid your post only scratched the surface.

I`m already realize this 3 years ago,
what i think, the game developer Bluehole just `Lazzy`,
and you can see how they were (Bluehole) was `Enslaved` by market `Demand`,
for examples, like making so many cosmetic for female characters only,
with the result.. thats why.. they always gender-locked so many classes with female characters.

I think, US (American) market and culture has very big impact for TERA concept it self,
for examples, if you seen for the most-costume in TERA ENMASSE, its reflected its self how look the `casual` theme in US (America),
Police car, Race car, Cops costume, Hover bike, SWAT costume, etc.
And guess what?, did America doesnt have good history concept like 14-15th centuries?, which is a bit near for medieval and ghotics theme concept? i think Bluehole development team just lost their `mind` and `imagination`, i have sorry to say that, but i think they deserve it,
And for my self as an artist, i think they can do alot more than that..
From that point, Bluehole as developer like to be `paranoid` in the point of view, and seem to be have no choice to force implemented those casual and futuristics concept..

And result..., thats is the problem in almost korean MMORPG, they were `paranoid`, they afraid if no one would buy it,
and they have no choice to destroying the game concept, by selling futuristics theme,
for my self.., i never buy any cosmetics with futuristics theme for my characters..

This game is really fantasy heavy. Still people are upset for a giant baby chick. I have to admit that tera has thrown their lore out the window but I like the items they release.
