Crafting
Should I start building up my crafting skills or is there not much point anymore?

Etching only makes money if you're lucky with RNG that day, it's one of the biggest gamble of the 4 crafting options. Otherwise, you probably should find other means to make gold. Considering how much the flow of scarabs are in the market prior to previous patches and also the demands of dendrites rather than titan mats (fire or peace) are much higher since the scarabs' increase in prices.
We're looking at a similar pricing like the old prices of etching mats back then. The cost of PP to gather really did affect the amount of scarabs you get, which you'll need to have a gathering account just for that purpose. Since you need a lot of scarabs just to make something happen.
Weapon crafting: absolutely useless aside from brooches, and maybe oils. When leveling, avatar weapons will outperform just about anything you can craft yourself. At endgame, there are much easier (and cheaper) ways to acquire weapons than crafting them yourself.*
Armor crafting: decent for crafting your own armor on leveling alts, but mostly useless at endgame (aside from brooches and oils). Like weapon crafting, at endgame, you will be better off getting your armor from dungeons or tokens or other means, versus crafting it yourself.*
Etching: useful, potentially even profitable, but highly RNG dependent.
Alchemy: this is the only one I haven't mastered yet, though I'm in the process of doing so on one of my alts. It's a useful skill if you have any alts who could benefit from scrolls and potions; also potentially profitable depending on broker prices..? Not as massively profitable as etching can be, though it's also less RNG dependent.
Think of alchemy as being slow and steady income, vs. etching which is more like playing the lottery. The other two, armor and weapon crafting, have very little practical use in the current game.
* - excludes VM gear. VM crafting is still viable, though it doesn't require master level in either discipline, thus it's irrelevant to the overall crafting discussion.
One idea I had to make weapon and armor crafting viable again is for BHS to make exclusive skins that can only be crafted by master crafters. I mean the only thing people like better than +15s and shiny titles is fancy costumes... what if there were some really cool costumes and weapon skins that ONLY master armor and weapon crafters could craft? Not only would that give us current master crafters some additional revenue, but it would also give other players incentive to maybe master crafting in these otherwise useless and unused crafts?
That would be pretty nice. Or, hell. Maybe if you're a weaponcrafting master, you only need half the materials to make a VM weapon or something. Makes sense that a novice would waste more materials than a master. Or a better chance to get that 3% stat people are always after. Or maybe 30% less materials used. Or a chance for the item to come out already MASTERworked if it's made by a MASTER. I don't know. Something. Anything. Even the smallest tweak could make crafting useful since right now wow it's nothing.
