A question to Br/SEA/Latin/Astralian players

Why DO you play this game? Not your reasons for enjoyment but instead i mean the logistics behind you CHOOSING this game among many others?

Think about this for a moment:

You have a game where its server is located in Chicago very far from many of your countries while other locations are not supported.

They then extend a pay model to your countries to buy subs/emp but

The countries they extended their pay models to

Are not supported by the raw nature of the game itself, you do not have a localized server nor any input ping assistance to alleviate all the obvious problems that will come with you playing this game

So why play a game that strictly has not been designed for you?

Why go through all the trouble of dealing with monstrously high ping, lag, unresponsiveness and the full on dependacy on 3PAs to get decent alleviation?

Anyone who says high ping doesnt affect dps BnS and its inbuilt parser will prove that notion incorrect and korean action mmos in general are ping sensitive.

So why subject yourselves to a game that objectively isnt designed with you in mind?

Why subject yourselves to being openly harrassed/labeled and attacked , from looking at the posts from the last 2 days, even if the devs extended their pay plan to you surely.

Surely you mustve thought that is couldnt possibly have been worth all of...this?

And moving to EU wont fix your problem, GF is against proxy sp why go through the trouble just to get burned?

Are you really that shackled to this game?

I am very curious.

  • among many others?
what many others? The market for F2P or even B2P MMO's is awful right now. And BDO isn't even available in South America as far as I know so that's one major option that's out of the question. If it turns out you don't enjoy Blade & Soul then you're pretty much screwed.
So why subject yourselves to a game that objectively isnt designed with you in mind?
As though BHS has had us NA players in mind during development in recent years?... We get content that is balanced around systems we don't have, classes that are balanced around systems we don't have, and the game itself is designed to play on ping levels lower than what most NA players are ever going to hope to achieve on the NA server.

So I mean, why do any of the rest of us play, if the game isn't "designed with us in mind?"

  • 1. There are literally 2 games in Australia that I know are being supported with oceanic servers that tend to work. Blizzard games and Warframe (Which both have skill prediction in-built from what I know so I can play with EU players in Warframe when I'm in Australia)
    2. I enjoy socializing, even if it's just online.
    3. I came from a background of mostly classic MMOs, such as Ragnarok Onlike 2, Aura Kingdom, Guild wars 2. I was looking for something with a bit of action on it, and TERA sounds good.
    4. After playing for 3-4 months ping tax started to set in, and it started cutting my enjoyment for the game, until a friend reccomended proxy as a ping reducer. Ever since I have enjoyed a lag-free (mostly) unique action game that is not as much of a snoozefest (imo) as WoW, and is not pushing me to be always solo or have no reason to talk to my group members, warframe.

I would welcome any MMO suggestions you might have that would give me less than 80ms in Australia if you disagree with this

I appreciate your curiosity, but if it's out there, we would try it. And if we like it, we'll keep playing it. There's no such thing as "not being designed for you" when the origin of the game in the first place is in Korea, which would mean that the mechancis and such of TERA would not be appropriate for a western release without a lot of revamp to fit with the needs of a western audience.

I do know that games like Guild Wars 2, Warframe and World of Warcraft were designed to aim at a more western audience, and through their reccomendations and open understanding (and in cases misunderstanding) of the community to make a game that would still satisfy their customers while still gaining them their much needed revenue.

It's just not a matter of design, it's a matter of you enjoying the game, and feel that you want to keep progressing in it because: It is entertaining, I got some dear friends and can meet new ones. Isn't that what an MMO is supposed to be? Massively Multiplayer Online. Designed for everyone. Which is why it's a very hard concept to get right for most companies. I understand it is hard to get right, which is why I'd rather enjoy the game rather than the items and benefits it offers. And lagging takes the fun away from a game for me, which is why I don't really enjoy playing Battle Royales and Fighting games, but enjoy watching them instead.

Though I will say, I do agree with you on the part that when you spend money in a game, you get invested and "shackled". When that happens you believe part of the game is "yours", which is usually why pay 2 play can be dangerous. But I will disagree with the part that we should look into a game's business model before we play it. The whole premise of free to play is that you CAN play it for free and if you like the game, you can invest in it. Sort of how you play a demo of a game before deciding whether you want to buy it. Good example is guild wars 2, you can do all low and high level content, including the raids (with some help), but if you decide you like the game you can 'invest' in it and buy the expansions which will unlock a ton of new content and goodies you can get that doesn't give you an edge, but enriches your experience. All this has nothing to do with TERA as a game, but I would like for you to understand these aspects of design you're referring to.

  • People have to be dumb if they think only the International crowd is affect. Even if you live in the US, if you aren't close to the server you'll suffer from ping. Even having 50, 60 let alone 80 IS a big deal that requires you to use proxy if you wanna be competitive in the PvE scene. I don't know why people think NA is magically immune to this, pure naivety or stupidity. Or both.
  • That's a foolish question. You realize this game was released on NA in 2012 right. It's been 6 years, this was one of the very first 'action-rpg' MMOs to be published, truly unique at the time. A lot of players are oldschool, including me, who have been around for a long time. Even today Tera's PvE is by far the best out there, nothing even comes remotely close.

I didn't say NA was immune to it, i am simply adressing the people who have it far worse and am curious as to their reasons for playing a game that has a server so monstrously far from their country that issues like these are inevitable.

    Fair enough ^^

The design was the literal hole filled with problems youre bound to run in to. Because you do not have a native server obviously this was to occurr after they killed proxys.

The level of ping many of you are soon going to deal with is, imo, unplayable. Though i understand your motives, trying it out, but if i played a game that had horrid delay, upload issues and a server so far from home i could not see myself playing, especially not long term.

The honeymoon period would have driven me off so ppl playing in such conditions seemed...illogical.

I agree, proxy was my only hold into the game. By design, an action based game would be terrible in high ping conditions mostly because it needs to be based upon prediction and reaction. When you got lag, both of those are heavily distorted.

I am still attracted by its unique playstyle and the fact that I feel like I still have so much to learn about all the classes in the game. I do tend to be competitive in a PvE environment (not pvp cause i just suck at it) so I like to get to know what other classes do that gives them an edge. I say that cause I started off as slayer for the most of my playthrough, but now I ended up mostly playing gunner cause explosions and a more challenging (cause i feel like I know most of the tricks about slayer and have practiced them to oblivion)/ flexible dps rotation.

But if the game lags horridly, high ping and is unresponsive, stutters with infrastructure and requires 3PAs (an illegal tool) to play which is now gone

It being the best action game of 2011-2012 doesnt mean much vs the weight of even playing efficiently.

Have you ever played games at 100+ ping? Warframe/BnS/FF14 are NIGHTMARES at 100+ ping

Now those were due to server issues but for people playing in that consistently, your action games becomes more of a chore than the best action mmo of 2011-2012

Id say the BnS and BDO go pretty even or even better than Teras, especially BDOs variant movement + attack = alternate skill

Its not a stupid question, if you view it as such and that is your reasoning then i will agree to disagree with your opinion.

Of course I have played those other games. BDO, BnS and FFXIV are dull. Dropped after a week trying on each. Warframe is hosted by the players, so you'll have low ms most of the time. I also play League with 5ms, and have played a lot on the NA Server with 180ms. First - back then it was EXPECT to have high ping, the game was much simpler you'd just clear stuff, gear up, PvP. Now with all the competition and knowing how it is to play on low ping, the game is COMPLETELY different than what it used to be.

It's foolish to compare launch Tera to modern day Tera, it's like two completely different games, two completely different experiences.
  • from aus.
cos i am addicted to self harming mysef (joke). though it doesn't sound like a joke.
tera is the only game i play aside from two rhythm games (occasionally)
sounds stupid, I loved the elins and I've just grown to love my main character enough to continue playing.
as well the game has always been enjoyable to me. love the playstyle. love my guild. love being dumb and complaining in chat when i die during reaping. "OK TERA".
tera is just a fun game to me.
actually I'm game noob and I didn't know what ping was and that my skills were being affected because of my location. then once I saw an archer cast rapid fire and I didn't remember my skill being that fast... so when i discovered proxy 2 years after playing with 250ms i was actually on the verge of crying

as of recent and the stupid grinding and bore it takes to gear, i've grown pretty distant of tera anyway... and now this event has pushed me away almost completely. if it came 6 months ago I wouldv'e been more broken over this.

thankfully I'm an artist and I can bring my elins with me. :'3c
