"Straight boy fantasy"--yes that is definitely present. The implication is that it is pursued exclusively.

(I am not quoting the person who used similar phrase because I do not feel the person who used it deserves any of the irritation and frustration I am expressing in this post. They expressed a legitimate opinion. It is the phrase itself that is prompting me, not what they said.)

I would point out that straight boy fantasy usually=gay female fantasy.

So that's everyone who likes girls and is even moderately visually oriented.

Straight girl fantasy--OMG YES this is present. Those Amani shoulders, the rugged human features and overmuscled frames. The Castanic male smouldering good looks. That fantastic yet tragic love story in the 40-50 leveling area. (OMG Kaidun--if I weren't happily married he would need to call me. )

Our fantasies are more subtle--which is why our porn fills libraries and is sold in ordinary bookstores while guys' porn is isolated in special stores and NSFW websites. But female fantasy FILLS this game. And sells more than a few things.

Gay male fantasy--yes. Have you seen how hard it is to get a costume for most male characters that has a shirt? Outside of metal class armor, that is. High elves are particularly prone to this. My high elf sorcerer always looked like he had just got off work at a strip club.

So my point here is--please stop bashing straight male fantasies as a driving force of the game. BH included everyone's fantasy they could come up with. Because when we hit puberty, nature assigns us a hobby and we will spend money to support it.

And yes, straight males probably outnumber* the other three demographics combined in this game, but that doesn't mean that BH is catering exclusively to them. They put stuff for everyone into this game. Even the asexuals (plenty of cute stuff for the popori and some of the winter dresses are nearly modest) and furries (bear and sheep costumes anyone? Not that furries are the only ones who like those costumes). Then they see what sells the best and make more like it.

It is logical that BH would end up skewing toward straight male fantasy under those circumstances. And as a straight female, I have a healthy appreciation for straight males and am tired of them being bashed for having a healthy interest in the female form.

I think what many of us are hoping to communicate to BH is even if there is a preference to female costumes and characters of 3:1, we've had so many female locked classes that are currently the easiest to play and succeed with that the ratio is getting skewed artificially higher. Nobody wants the same thing all the time and I think we are ready for a male locked class or opening the female locked classes to their male counterparts.

Maybe the ratio skewing will be addressed by the upcoming class changes over the next year. If the gap in performance narrows we should see more males being played.

Sorry for the rant. Guess the phrase touched a nerve. I blame no one who skipped this post, it's a monster.

*assumption based on the following--more males than females play Tera, and LGBT is generally 3.8% of the US populace by self-identification in surveys. (From Gallup polls)

Tera release 2011 and first race/gender locked class release 2014
Time given to let player support what they want and Reaper/Gunner/Ninja are the outcome.
Join the vote late? Decision already made... to turn the table? Pay the fee to make a male class... /run

Welcome to Tera Online 2016, where there is only 1% of the male character population is remaining, according to what everyone is saying.

Why even keep that 1% population which only 0.05% is buying the emp outfits? By deleting all the male characters and costumes, new customers are forced to create female characters which potentially make more profit because female is the majority, female clothing is the majority, female classes is the majority, the "female reroll possibility" is the majority.

Do we care if the player base is made up of "BOYS GAMERS" only? Do we care if they see female in some weird way and have mental problem? Do we care about whether there is "STRAIGHT BOY FANTASY", "GAY FEMALE FANTASY", or whatever other fantasies there are among the 99% population? The reality still remains that only 1% of the population is playing male characters, according to numerous people arguing BHS only supporting the 99% majority of female characters.

Instead of stopping the support for that 1% male character population and making them feel neglected and a minority among the 99% population, getting rid of them is a much more merciful way to deal with it.

Does this make people mad? Hell yeah, they do. However, only 1% of the population would be mad since 99% of the majority plays female characters. Wait, it makes other people mad beside the 1% of the population? If it does make other people mad by forcing a FEMALE ONLY option in this game, i find it funny others aren't supporting the cause but claiming "99% OF US IS PLAYING FEMALE CHARACTERS, THAT'S WHY BHS CATER TO OUR INTERESTS".

Well, it sure is expensive to add male option to the classes right? If Tera developers can't afford to add a male option to their class releases, i don't know if i should be expecting any "REAL" upcoming contents beside the repeatedly reused of old contents.

Why do we care about this at all? Many people would say "if you don't like it, then uninstall". The truth is, we love Tera as much as you do, and we care about the game and its future. That's why we bother making these threads and voicing our opinions so the game will be heading in the right direction.

In short, for those who don't understand satire, I support the OP.
  • If you have limited staff and money and you know that the majority of your customers like pink outfits but a minority like blue ones which would you make? Tera is a business and most players play female classes, it's also worth pointing out that people are far more likely to spend money on making their waifu look pretty than a male character.
  • All these threads are essentially doing one thing...

    Beating on a dead leaf.

Seriously, let me redirect you all to the search tool where you can find at least several dozen threads on this already:

To be honest I'd be more inclined to play male characters if their costumes weren't so grossly overpriced via broker-- because of their lack of popularity compared to female characters there's so few outfits for them usually making them expensive as heck. And I don't care what I'm playing as long as I can make them look good.

But I guess this is an endless problem, little male population, fewer costumes in the broker, higher prices, ad infinitum.

Garment Boxes for male races might help a little.

"several dozen threads"? If you bothered clicking the Next button, you'll see there're only 6 threads about this issue within 1 YEAR of TODAY, excluding spacecats' "Tera 2016 Review". Yes, we're doing the same thing you said "beating on a dead leaf" like what African slaves and women did during and after colonial time. It is desperate with no hope, but we want reformation.

Yes, you are absolutely right because adding a blue outfit along with a pink outfit will take at least 2 years to do so.

Going along with your generalization, why new games bother adding MALE identity in the first place? If most players "are far more likely to spend money on making their waifu look pretty than a male character", shouldn't we just delete the male identity in the first place? Not only it reduces the amount of work devs have to do, it also generates more profit and take less resources. I'm sure the amount of people who get mad won't be nearly 1/100 of the amount of player base. Yet, if the game turns to FEMALE ONLY, the other 99% will start voicing unsatisfactory.

I find a great hypocrisy and contradiction in these arguments.

Posts like this one always confuse me.

If you are referring to the etiquette of "don't start a new thread on a topic that already has a thread", then you have a point. I would like to say that no one is yet used to the search function working, so pointing out that there is one and it should be used before creating a new thread is, in fact, helpful.

If you are more pointing out the hopelessness of our posts, if we are indeed "beating a dead leaf"--BTW does anyone know what culture uses a phrase like that? The only one I know is "beating a dead horse" meaning you can strike it all you want, it's not going to take you anywhere or work any better. I like the dead leaf thing and wonder if it's a mistranslation of the dead horse phrase or an entirely unique aphorism with it's own origins.

Back on topic, if we are wasting our time, it's our time to waste. Wasting my time does not hurt you or anyone else. You actually had to select the link and read through it to know what was here--what a waste of YOUR time. Or else you just assumed the contents of the thread based on the title and commented generically on the subject--on which case I will pay your opinion exactly the attention it deserves. None.

Since you must know that, why even look in a thread like this one? All you have done is make our thread longer which increases the likelihood of it getting noticed. Which is one way we could eventually show BH that this matters to us. As is spending more money on male costumes and the other suggestions made here.

Which was the whole point of the thread--a combination of complaint center and suggestion box.

BHS admitted in their latest Q&A that the reason why they are making it female only, is because more players play females, so females are more popular, and so they will go with whats more popular. It is sad, but that's the reality.

And how are players supposed to play males, if classes for them don't exist ?

^ This. It's why BHS' statement on why they won't create non-gender locked classes is absolutely ridiculous. Of course females are going to be played more when the most OP classes in the game are only available as females. If Popori brawlers had been a thing, I'd have made one in a heartbeat. Same with some of the other newer classes for various male races.

i second this. It is reasonable why reapers and ninja are race-locked because they appear to have a quick fighting style, but gunners and brawlers shouldn't be gender-locked!!!!
  • in the end tera will become moba.
