As for gender lock itself, it seems more and more devs do this at least to extend a game's life span. As counter argument, I personally know how hard is to make a rigged 3D character (I made two for Second Life and boy is it hard), and basing on the amount of work taken on the original classes to make them available to all races/genders, I suppose we would have seen a non race/gender locked reaper release by late 2015. Just an assumption, but the original classes do have a lot of race/gender specific animations and a BUNCH of starter armor sets that all needed to be rigged, animated and collision boxed.
But on the counter counter argument, I think we were completely fine with the original classes. They could have added a few more skills (like they did for the level cap update years ago) and could have concentrated on making more pve and pvp content instead. So in the end, really, I have no idea why it seems more profitable to make a bunch of new female classes instead of updating what we already have and keep the playable content going forward.
Well, to me that makes no sense as to how new classes especially gender/race locked can help anything. At least not in a game where all the original classes could be used by everyone and now if you want anything new you have to play female. If the next class is Elin that will be 3 Elin only classes I don't know how much more of restricting to Elin players could take. Even with as much as some players love them it seems the line needs to be drawn somewhere or we just need to delete all male characters and make everyone play castanic, high elf, and human female and elins because that's soon how the game will feel regardless if they keep this cycle going. I feel I'm rambling too much, but basically what I'm saying is people will get sick of lack of diversity because of all the "this race only" classes that will flood everything as long as they keep coming out every 6months.
what are non-elins? has science gone too far?
If nothing else, Tera's customization at character creation is NOT strong enough to support a game of everyone playing only Elins and occasionally female Humans/Castanics/Elves. Especially when they add barely anything new to go with the exclusive classes. Brawlers brought us 1 new hair option. Gunners brought 2-3 to each hair options, Reapers brought us 1 hair and 1 or 2 faces (I think), Ninja brought 0. That's some extremely stale customization options for race/gender combos we're all being funneled into. I think Blade and Soul launched with more customization than Tera has right now. They are certainly leagues ahead right now, AND offer more agreeable class/race locking - with no gender locking.
At this point, if Elin are the cash cow they are made out to be, there's no excuse for the hard set colors on their ears/tails. It should just be another selection they can make. And they should strongly consider adding a few more subtle ear/tail options, IMO, if they're going to force me to play little girls, they least they can do is let me opt out of being a furry.
They need to improve our ability to make unique characters by a LOT if they're not going to let us actually play the race/gender we want.
Yep, exactly. Like we can't even edit body size, height, face size, tail length, etc. It is so hard to be diverse in Tera and BHS is making it harder and that is my major issue with the game. If I didn't love the dungeons and combat so much I wouldn't play and would play some other games. We need options xD
Ninja brought two new hairs, two hair colors and two adornment options for two already available faces. STILL, what you said makes sense. If they are gonna force feed us elins, might as well make them more customizable.
They also need to do better with armor and costume design. if we all have to play women, don't make it the 13th labor to find an outfit that actually looks like armor. I think the best option a Brawler gets is the Dreadwraith, which still fails to armor non trivial parts of the body. Ninja have to wear the NF dress to be fully covered, and that's not vaguely ninja looking. I am still truly frustrated that the Rogue's outfit puts all females in nonsense corsets instead of being a full body suit like it is on Males. Or the female bloodshadow costumes that cover less crotch than most swimsuits (and again, fail to be as interesting as the male counterparts).
I get that sexy and silly outfits sell. But I'd bet 'badass' would also sale if they gave it an honest effort. If the phoenix gi or the rogues garb were actually 'cool' on females like it is on males, I'd own both, possibly multiple times. Again, I invoke the model of Blade and Soul, who have done a good job of making sure that some outfits are pure badass no matter what race/gender you play, but also making sure some outfits are particularly sexy on females.
I see. I'm glad it wasn't actually 0 like I thought. Still not a fan of any of the available Elin options besides the Reaper wings, which clash with....everything. Another example of something that needs more customization. There's no excuse not to let me color match the Reaper wing feature to match one of the Reaper dresses.
