I think TERA is slowly killing my rig.

So, I had some extra money about a year ago and I built this behemoth. The current part list is the culmination of about 2 years of planning and upgrading, and I'm pretty proud of myself for it. No issues from gaming, 3D rendering, or even the odd Let's Play.

Well, that's not quite right. I have one, single problem, and that's TERA. This game seems to be the only one that can't handle all that exuberant hardware for whatever reason. Here's what I mean by that: I just bought DOOM, right? Awesome game; I can play that at max settings with no problem at all. Fantastic. Contrast to TERA, where if I dare have the gall to use the Everfall Nostrum and the Talisman Trio at the same time, the game goes into cardiac arrest. A long time ago, whenever a warrior did Traverse Cut, the framerate went completely to s**t. Oh, and don't get me started on the random PC crashes (yes, my entire rig crashes) that seem to occur only when TERA is running...

I like this game, I really do. But why does it seem that with each patch that drops, something else in the game (usually unrelated) breaks? It's getting pretty frustrating that I have to worry about whether or not my PC is going to choke on itself while I'm in the middle of running a dungeon.

Anyone else having some similar issues? Did you manage to find a fix for anything?

Whats your rig? My rig runs Tera at preset 6 50-120 fps perfectly fine.
  • There's a number of tweaks to the ini that needs to be made in order for tera to run halfway decently on newer pcs, but I can't really get into them since it's against the TOS. I can say that Tera loves to default to using dx9 instead of 10 or 11, and for some reason, the game constantly thinks that it's stressing your system even though it's barely using 20% of your available gpu processing power. Again, there's ways around this, but I cannot get into them. :\

Is the link not working? "This behemoth" should lead to PCPartPicker.

Ok I see it now. I'll send you a msg.
  • you are using windows 10, i recommend you to add tera to windows defender exceptions and using it as your default antivirus, also add it to windows firewall exceptions.

windows 10 ins't compatible with every software you are using, for any company today is better to use win 7 because reasons* mostt MMO doesn't run at 100% on that versión, some games doesn't even run.

dont force the game to use Direct X 10 -11-12 it likes directx 9.

Play tera from your SSD (and run your SO from there too, because reasons*)

Any korean game has the worst performance in any machine, so isn't your fault.

take a look to the performance tweaks guide for tera here

    reasons*:

installed windows 10 once. but i needed to install win 7 back because 70% of my software doesn't works there, and there is no chance to update that sofware, even games from 2013<.

SSD are op for some runtime process on win 10 that you cant crontrol and affect anything that uses your CPU, tera uses your CPU more than your GPU, so if you change your GTX 980 ti for a GTX 650 you'll not feel anything in this game.

    i hope that helps you.

Nice rig, but definitely would have gone with a different processor. Google TERA FPS fix and you will find a guide. I run older equipment and don't usually drop below 50FPS. You are right tho, it does seem to get a little worse with every patch. It seems like the Sorc is getting a passive enemy FPS debuff in upcoming patches with all those flashy new skill overhauls. Kek.

Tera is poorly optimized. Maybe not optimized at all. It runs raw. Pretty much every dev mistake your computer arts teacher tells you not to do is done in the development of this game. Heavy UI using the most resource hogging ways? Check. Wrong format, large file size particles? Check. Unnecessary ping dependency? Check. CPU dependency and wrongest usage of a GPU? (because despite hardly using the GPU it still heats it up massively) Check too.

Thing is, Tera is a hit or miss game for many computers out there. You either have problems, or no problems at all. Very little middle ground.

Since they cannot really be discussed here(even though there's a thread around that hasn't been deleted) you will want to search the web for an optimization guide. It covers simple aspects as running full screen over windowed, and stuff more advanced like ini tweaks. Deal with those at your own risk though. Support won't help with a modified client, and ini tweaks count as that.

Other things to do that do not mod the client are, As said, toss the entire tera folder in your AV's exceptions list. Make sure Aerial and Lurid display in video options are set to 1 or 0. Setting to 2 causes a lot of fps issues and lock ups on many computers.

As for the elite buffs issue, I had an odd experience with them. I use a controller to play, and I added those buffs to my skills hotbar. Activating them through controller input locks up the computer for a few seconds. But activating them through keyboard doesn't freeze anything. If you are clicking on them directly from the elite bar and they freeze from there(in my case they work normally from there but could be different for you), try copying them to either the skills bar or a sub hotbar and try from there. Maybe one of them will remove the freezing.

@SageWindu Make sure the backplate for your H100i isn't loose. The PCB for my motherboard is thinner than most and I had to add fiber washers to the backplate. Now I can play longer without having to restart Tera.

  • One really oddball thing I noticed is that Tera would routinely crash until I removed Razer Synapse from startup. Of course this killed the reason for a gaming mouse and keypad. There were no issues reported elsewhere for Synapse software problems or Tera incompatibilities. Synapse had no issues with Doom 2016, MWO or anything else.

Anyhow based on a wild guess and rare issues with the USB 3.0 chipset in the Alienware Triad 51 with legacy software I tried moving all Razer stuff to a dumbed down USB 2.0 port hub, re-enabled Synapse and there was joy in Mudville. No further crashes.

It's a long shot but move any gaming stuff from USB 3.0 to 2.0. If you've nothing but 3.0 a cheap 2.0 hub works - the cheaper and dumber the better. It seemed the only common issue with Tera and brand new bleeding edge machines traced back to USB 3.0. At any rate, even if I can't explain why it worked, it worked.
  • don't know if this is helpful or not but i did a video attempting to benchmark the game

Did you post anywhere explaining the changes that you made? Compared text from your settings to default settings and there's a few extra settings that aren't in the default.

  • I really have no idea. I compared our computers specs and your PC is better then mine by a lot, I am only running an i7-4770 at 3.4 ghz, and you have way more ram then I could ever hope to have. I manage to get 60 fps though. I didn't mod my game at all, or fix any ini files. I honestly have not had any problems running this game. Could be that I am still running windows 7? I don't know.

What were you using? Were you overclocking at all?

If the fan is not working, get a new one asap. You can replace GPU fans with either stock stuff or custom stuff (all the way to liquid cooled GPU solutions). Of course a GPU will stop and try to shut down if it has no cooling and heats up. It's actually a programmed protection the card has to stop it from melting or even causing a fire.
