Currently on the fence about returning

Hello guys,

I'm an 'old' veteran of tera. I've been playing since it went f2p 3 years ago and left late last year. The main reason for my departure was ping. I'm from Southeast Asia, specifically Singapore. We have very very stable internet connection here, so very very rare lag spikes, but because we're in southeast asia, we get [filtered] ping. I'm usually stable at around 220-250. FPS runs around 30-100 depending on where i am (the broker at highwatch sucks for FPS).

So, my question is this, are there any 200+ ping players that are playing at the top end of the game? i.e. clearing all the top HM dungeons and playing PVP competitively? My apprehension to continue playing is due to the fact that I'm severely disadvantaged due to my ping. I've been meddling with brawler for a little bit and recognise that my left click punches chain so much slower than those i see on youtube. That's why i'm kind of on the fence about coming back and committing the hours to gear up, etc.

It is very true that some classes do worse than others with high ping, but 200 isn't so bad in PvE that you can't match other low ping players, well at least on classes that aren't Archer. In PvP it's quite the same deal, some classes do better than others but they're not the same classes as in PvE. For example you will have a VERY tough time PvPing on Slayer at high ping while in PvE it doesn't really matter at all.

Also, if it matters... before I always had a about 220 ping myself, but I noticed it's been stable 150 in the past couple of months. So if ping was the only thing stopping you from playing, I'd say do try again.

Other than that... there are other Tera-like MMOs coming later this year, so you could check up on those too if you were planning on coming back to Tera for a long time.

That's the thing with tera. I've tried so many other games and they're all utter shyte compared to tera. I suppose that's what you get when you spend 3 years playing tera ._.

Anyways, what classes, in your opinion, would be suitable for a stable 220 ping?

I may recommend waiting a few months for the major balance patches, since there's some somewhat severe lack of balance going on right now.
  • I'm not entirely keen on waiting a few months. :open_mouth:
  • If you are a PvE player, you should be fine, and even if you are more PvP, you will have to PvE for a while to catch back up on gear, so that will burn at least a little time till the optimization patches. Not all of it, not even most of it, but at least some, PvP is much more ping based than PvE so if PvE is all you care about you should be fine :)

Well, for PvE at least just about every healer, melee class and Gunner shouldn't have trouble keeping up with damage no matter the ping, mostly Archer and Sorc will be unable to utilize one of their main skills that well with low ping. Oh, and high ping warriors will not exactly be able to chain skills as fast as low ping warrior, but it still feels fast enough- in fact there are two rotations for the class, one for low ping and other for high ping.
  • Take a look at this:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/TeraOnline/comments/44gwzk/ping_friendliness_of_different_classes_and/czqilbb

Brawlers and Slayers are best suited for high ping in PvE because they have skills that can cancel other skills, which means they get queued up with each other more easily, which is more ping friendly. High APM classes like Sorcerer and Warrior are not great, since both suffer from lack of super cancelling skills, and delayed lock ons on Sorcs. Classes that rely heavily on charged skills like Archer and Berserker are the worst since every tick charge is dependent on your ping.
  • I too was considering returning when I saw that new classes had been added. I actually played TERA when it first released, yeah, I used to pay to play. I stopped for a while due to other games and not enough time to play. I came back for a while after it went F2P up until right after the Reaper class was introduced. Ninja looks interesting but I really don't want to play an Elin. It was annoying enough to be forced to play a character that looks like a 9 year old girl just to try out a new class, and I just found out that the Ninja class is Elin only as well. Does anyone know if there are any plans in the future to make this class available to other races?

@bzhen0915 thanks for the link. I've checked it out and found brawlers to be ping friendly. That's quite nice since i was leaning towards playing a brawler for its OP-ness (although it's going to get nerfed soon), as well as it being a tank. However, i notice that my left click and right click are quite slow (the combo for 1,2,3 normal punches + block). It's very noticeable.

So the question is, how often do brawlers use left click + right click combo during pve/pvp?

@Kiara146 so technically, i'll only be disadvantaged in 3v3s? Is that what you're saying?

@Acendia I actually have a decently geared warrior and i love it. However, i get seriously disheartened when i look at the warrior ping video on youtube. It made me realise how much difference there was. That ping video was the one that made me quit lol.

@10BladesTango that will never happen. BHS will never remove gender-lock.
  • 3v3s, and BGs, but I have met people that are around your ping and are still much better than me, honestly 200 isn't as bad as a lot of people play with, it isn't great don't get me wrong, but with upcoming optimizations I don't think that you will have as big of problems as you think you will.
  • Hmm, that's good to hear. haha.

With regards to brawlers, can anyone comment? Do brawlers use left click + right click often? since that's the skill chain that's noticeably slower than usual. Also, i read somewhere that brawlers rarely use right click block. Most of them are skills that have been glyphed to block while casting. Is that true? Cause i'm having trouble timing my block perfectly with my ping :expressionless:
  • They don't really use the left + right click combo very much anymore, since it got nerfed. If you manage to keep up Growing Fury for most of a fight, you probably would be rarely touching the right click block. But for some bosses it isn't possible, and right click blocking is still necessary.
  • Is Growing fury the 'buff' that causes the skills to have a passive block? I'm currently at work right now so can't check :open_mouth:

Also, if that's the case, then it's amazing. I really like brawler gameplay style.
  • I've been playing TERA on and off since it had a subscription. I'm always coming back, finally decided to just stay because every other MMO I try they can't get the combat right. That's one thing TERA has going for it, combat. So far the game has been out for a while and it's still going decently strong I have to admit (which is good).
  • That's the thing. Once you've played tera, every other game's combat seem very stale and boring. That's also why I keep coming back. Can't seem to find a game that's as visually appealing.

No I'm not a fan boy. Quite far from it actually.
