I believe they just use them as race names, like we already have for dogs (Chihuahua, Husky, Shiba Inu, you name it) as @TheGreyWolf already said
Alpacas and llamas can breed and produce fertile offspring, just like those dog races, which makes them, by our rules of biology, the same species. And just like the animal group "dog" there is the animal family "camelidae" which includes both llama and alpaca

Aha! Camelidae. Same group that dromedaries belong to. I knew I saw a familial resemblance.

Also, donkeys and mules are equines. So let's just call them horses.

    wait what

A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse. Hence, a mule is a "horse". Add to that the fact that donkeys are able to mate with horses... same species. If a dog is a dog, then a horse is a horse, of course, of course, and nobody can talk to a horse of course. That is, of course, unless the horse...

  • who cares the mount was not a good idea. this is a fantasy mmo. release some fantasy mounts like a griffin or some other animals like it.

Hmm, very interested thread, but what about artistic freedom?
Keeping in mind the artistic freedom, llama can be llama or alpaca easily.

In this game turtle eggs become "lime deposits"--so why not an alpaca called a llama? Besides llama is more fun to say.

    Llama llama llama llama....Hello llama!

you dont know what defines a species, do you?

    Reminds me of this.

I come from a country that has both animals. I seen them both in real life and i know the difference. The main differences in betwen, as you can see in the picture, are the fur, and the ears. Llamas ears are a bit longer than Alpacas.

The current mount is a monster combination of both animals :S It has the fur of an alpaca, but the ears of a Llama. Creepy.

I should consider buying it for account. :awesome:

Okay so technically a horse and a donkey can't produce fertile offspring. But horses, donkeys and mules are all in the same "family", even if not technically the same "species". It was meant to be a joke post but you had to get all technical. Technically they are not the same "species" if we're talking scientific definitions here. So congratulations, you were technically correct on the internet. Have a gold star. :+1:

Apologies, professor. I was utilizing a bit of hyperbole there. I didn't realize I was being graded on the scientific accuracy of my statements. Dammit Jim, I'm a QA technician, not a zoologist!

In the spirit of fairness, I feel I should also correct one of my other former statements. Technically Chihuahuas are NOT "giant rodents". Again I was abusing the literary device of hyperbole.

    Oh, the humanities!

Uhhh, no, I'll have to stop you there. Unless you want an animal that will leave your couches with more hair, or fur, than your cat or dog, and additionally it will chew your carpet and any unlucky plant that may be in your house, and also will spit at you when you get too close, then the Alpaca would be the perfect pet for you, provided you can go through all the paperwork to have a wild animal living with you as a pet :skull:

The fur and chewing I can deal with. It's the spitting... that just crosses a line.

Not as dumb as the mounts themselves.

Tried to find a GIF of the "emo" mounts flipping their hair to highlight my point. But my Googling skills aren't what they used to be.
