As others have said, you can buy character slots, bank slots and other things by using actual in game gold.     As for entering instances. Some instances for the story mode can only be done solo. That may be why you need to disband the party. I THINK you can be in a party and queue for instance matching so the whole party enters a dungeon. Not sure of this as I haven't done it in awhile.
